"He said: 'this is what I want to do' and I remember, he stood up and that's when the gun went off."
Joanie watched Clint put a bullet in his own head.

Clint Malarchuck is a retired NHL goalie. In 1989 he was in an accident on the ice that nearly took his life, a skate cut his throat.

Eventually, unchecked PTSD from that incident drove Clint past the point of no return, he could only see one solution.

At the bottom of that bottle though,
was a bullet.

"I knew I was going to fail my second piss test too, I couldn't keep lying, I knew it was over. I went into Colleen's office and confessed."

Paul works for Northern Strands in Saskatoon, SK.

"Even though I had confessed, was still failing drug tests. I was 2 weeks into treatment before I realized I needed to take this seriously."

But then it worked.

Tune in this week and listen to Paul #takeofftheblinders around addiction at work. We'll talk about how things went wrong for him, and how his company stepped up to the plate and offered him everything he needed to return to work safe.

"I'll never forget going back, Colleen met me outside the front door. I was so scared."

She said,

"You've walked through these doors 1000 times Paul, we're really glad you're back."

For a company to step into the light and support their own like this is unprecedented. Paul's story is so powerful not only because he survived his toxic relationship with drugs, but also because he has an employer who is willing to pull up a chair and talk publicly about it.

Enough is enough.

We can't keep quiet about this anymore and I am so honored to provide a platform for Paul, and his employer Northern Strands to stand on, smash the stigma, and speak their truth.

"In my 25 years researching the traumas of colonization and addiction, the best solution I have ever found came though talking with a dog."

Colleen is a faculty member in the Department of Sociology and Past Research Chair in Substance Abuse at the University of Saskatchewan.

"Animals come from a place that is before judgment, because of this, people who have been stigmatized are able to open up to them without fear of persecution."

She has dedicated her life to finding answers to the insidious outcomes of trauma and substance use.
Isn't it interesting that in all her years of dedication and hard work, she found that the biggest problem in treating humans, is humans.

It seems so glaringly obvious now doesn't it?

"I was committed and I jumped, but I woke up on the floor. The belt broke."

Cody survived a horrific car crash. And while the crash didn't kill him, the trauma nearly did.

"The 2 most defining moments of my life were the day I jumped, and the day I found my purpose."

I wonder if those were the same day.

Even if that's true, he still ended up incarcerated.

"I was homeless for 7 years, my addiction took me there."

Earl was a wrestler in his teenage years, Bedford Road Collegiate, Saskatoon, SK.

Things were great until they weren't.

"The cops closed up my eye, bashed my head into a wall, broke my foot. When the cruiser pulled into the ally I knew what was happening. I seen this before."

Standing before the JP, up on 11 charges, partner murdered, nowhere left to go,

"That's when I finally got honest. I couldn't do it anymore."

Sweet surrender. By the grace of God, Earl was given a life-saving gift that day,

the gift of desperation.
