Hate Watching with Dan and Tony

This movie may just be the end of the Disaster Movie. Long a staple genre - back to movies like the Poseidon Adventure and the Airport series. Roland Emmerich brought them back with Independence Day and the Day after Tomorrow but whatever magic he had back then is so gone. This movie is weak sauce from the get go. Sad times, sad times.

Hate Watching is the show that puts genres to rest.

So Elon Musk just bought Twitter and people are losing their minds. He's gonna sell everyones data (Facebook has been doing that for years). He's gonna let hate speech run free (Facebook has been doing that for years). He's gonna let Trump back on (Trump was on Twitter for 10 years without being thrown off). Our fragile society has survived all this junk for years, we will be okay.

Superman 3 is a movie that shows how Hollywood tries to take a star and cram them into an existing scirpt. They wrote a Brainiac and Mr. Mxyzptlk movie then brought in Richard Pryor but tried to keep the same weird plot points. So nothing makes sense in this movie.  Also there is a lottery plot and Lana Lang love story. Also this movie is an old time slapstick comedy.

Hate Watching is the Show that figures it all out way too late.

Delgo is a movie that few have heard of and fewer have seen. It is a 3D animated movie of good intentions but sadly poor execution. Sometimes independent filmmakers reach for the sky and just don't get there or anywhere near there. That is Delgo. It stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and a lot of other real actors doing the voices. Is it better to have tried and failed or to have never tried? Delgo shows sometimes you should not have tried.

Hate Watching is the Show that is allowed one get out of free jail card.

Just watching a show about all the TikTok kid stars. Many of them have millions of viewers with makeup stuff and dancing and pop songing. Andy Warhol was right about the 15 minutes. It will be interesting to see if any of these starts can transition out of this into big things. Certainly people like Bo Burnham did but he was incredibly smart and terribly funny. The media landscape keeps chasing but its ability to elevate and then throw away has never changed.

Not sure if Howard the Duck is canon to the MCU. Is the Howard we see with the Collector, the Howard in this movie? Or is this all a Multiverse set up for decades in the making? And to answer the clickbait title of this episode - No, Howard the Duck is not the MCU's greatest film (that would be Winter Soldier.) But Howard is a weird experiment in comic movies that fails pretty much all over the place.

Comic books. Animation. These things were for kids but now they really drive a lot of Hollywood. And that is a good thing. They are our myths. Our gods. Our stories. And we now have the tech to really bring these fantastic stories to life. And when they work, they are magic and have the ability to move us. When they are bad, they can be infinitely cringey. But the good news is, there are so many comics out there that Hollywood has a lot to pick from and it's gonna be great when we get a good Man-thing horror movie and the Goodwin/Simonson Manhunter gets a mini-series. I'm ready, Make Mine Marvel.

This weeks movie is Bad Company, starring Anthony Hopkins and CHRIS ROCK! What you say? How could this be? The same Chris Rock who just got slapped at the Oscars by Will Smith? Yes, he starred in this weeks movie. And this movie was much less interesting than him getting slapped by Mr. Smith. Not to talk about the slap too much but it seems to me that the slap is gonna define Will Smith for next bunch of years but probably won't define Chris Rock much at all. I think that says it all.

Hate Watching is a show that for once seems tangentially topical.

There was a TV show called the Slap that came out in 2015. The promo for the show was very silly and the show seemed very much overhyped. But for years after the show I thought about it. How weird the title was. How weird the premise was. A slap is such particular thing. It is almost a contrivance. And we saw one play out on live TV. An unscripted moment that we all get to grind through our own filter. Laying blame as we choose or even choosing not to believe the thing was "real". But a moment that will linger and come to mean different things over time. Time always makes it decisions slowly and no one can control those decisions.

Tony loves the work of Dax Shepard. Like LOVES him. Dan is not so on board. So we have a lively discussion about Dax, autuer of the cinema. Is he the next Orson Welles? We get to the bottom of it by analyzing his seminal work, CHIPS.

Hate Watching with Dan and Tony is the show where ground is broken and hearts are crushed.

Well it is summer again. And it is only March. Oh we are in for it this year. Invest in air conditioning stock. We'll do our best to keep cool. Maybe go to the pool. Hang at the beach. Buy some ice and put it in a glass and rub that glass against our heads. This we will do. This and more. For the heat is coming.

Another week and another movie. Jackie Chan is great, Steve Coogan is in one of my fav movies of all time (Hamlet 2) but this movie just uses them badly. It is sad.  We call this a 2 joke comedy because you laugh twice during the movie. Jackie went on to do great stuff and Steve Coogan is still killing it. But I'm sure they wish this one was not streaming out in the world.

Post it notes.  Maybe the greatest human creation right after white out.  Such a great little way of organizing and disorganizing. My desk is covered with them.  Most I have no idea what they are about. old screen names or passwords or forgotten ideas. Sometimes they are ideas piled on other ideas . Some just have random names I thought of or random names of dinosaurs or alien races. But sometimes they are that great idea that is just waiting to be used. And when it is, that is magic.

We go old school to see how they did it in the 1980's and wow. This one feels more like a TV movie than a real movie. Not exciting, not good looking, bad acting but some wonderfully terrible special effects. This came out as a 3D movie so when those shots are converted to 2D they look especially terrible and thus GREAT! Plus Dennis Quaid, young and enthusiastic. Also a dog with long ears drinking water.

Hate Watching is the Show that is Itself.

Captain EO.  Tony doesn't remember it.  I was stunned. It is kind of crazy that this is a forgotten thing.  Maybe someday kids will rediscover it and say wow, this is the greatest thing ever. Or more likely no one will ever care again. This production that appeared for years will be gone from the collective consciousness.  This is what is gonna happen to most of the media we love right now.  Way back when there was vaudeville and a million stage plays which no one cares about. So many silent films forgotten, so many records unplayed and so many books. Books that will never be read, never loved. Now I have depressed myself.  I'll go read a book.

Is this movie not funny - yes it is very not funny. Does int make Kevin James look bad - yes it makes Kevin James look bad. Is it another giant waste of Taylor Lautner - yes, nobody knows what to do with this guy except the British. But its worst sin is that it tries to repaint the true history of NFL coach Sean Payton. And for that, we hate this movie.

Hate Watching is the only show that dares to go there.

So I guess baseball is heading into a lockout. This happening in this day and age when you had hoped people would know better is just amazing. I'm not a baseball fan so it does not effect me but it is just one of those big wastes because of money and ego. It will get sorted out but not after a bunch of stupidity. But I guess that is the way of the world. Things have to go pure stupid until enough people suffer then it finally gets fixed. Sort of. Life.

Few movies fail harder in having a consistent tone as the movie Colossal. It sells us a different tone in each act and it makes the movie hard to take. Spoilers - it also makes the terrible choice of casting Jason Sudekis as a terrible person. What next Paul Rudd as a serial killer. Oh Hollywood, what are you thinking.

Hate Watching is the show that stomps on Indies.

In this video we talk a little about NFTs and not in a positive way.  I'm hoping none of the cryptobros notice this and come after us. That is always a danger that they might find us and spam us and do other really hackersy stuff to silence our negative views about the art form of the future that are the NFTs. Who would want something that is amazing like a beautiful drawing or a cool bootleg action figure when you can kind of own a jpg that might be worth a fortune someday if you can find a person dumb enough to give you a fortune for it. Just the art form the world has been waiting for.  maybe Elon Musk will know my name and speak it out into the webosphere so that I might be validated by the bros that live there....if only ...if only.
