  • EP #1264: How Trees are Wonderful Self-Care that Teach Us Strength: Wisdom, Healing, and Renewal for Your Journey

    Send us Fan Mail

Lisa is joined by Alice Peck who talks about her book, Be More Tree: A journey of wisdom, symbols, healing, and renewal.

    Book decsription:

As author Alice Peck reflected on the maple tree in her backyard, she began to notice and then study its intricacies and changes. This became her regular meditation and inspiration. In Be More Tree, Alice shares what she has learned from that maple tree, and from the trees all around us. Every tree tells a complete and ongoing story—from its powerful taproots to the birds that alight on its fragile high branches. Trees reflect our lives through their perseverance and seasonal rhythms—always changing yet consistent. They evolve along a much more protracted timetable than humans. Like us, trees feel and react to their environment, and communicate with us in subtle but distinct ways. Here readers are invited to explore trees from four perspectives: their roots—wisdom and understanding; their branches—symbols and rituals; their leaves—healing and science; and their seeds—transformation and spirituality. All of these elements show us how, although they live outside us, trees offer a path to our inner selves. From the Bodhi Tree to the Garden of Eden, the Druids to forest monks, medicines to tire swings—people have always received physical, psychological, and spiritual sustenance from trees. Filled with insights from botany to poetry, ecology to mythology, and herbalism to sacraments, Be More Tree explores the ways these grounded yet soaring entities can steady and move us, teach and transform us, inspire and comfort us.

    Send us Fan Mail

Instead of talking about an article today from www.naturallysavvy.com, Lisa decided to post an interview she did with Dr. Cass Ingram from 2019 on natural remedies for cold and flu.

Dr. Ingram passed away in 2022.

    Dr. Cass's obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Cass Ingram (Cassim Igram) on Saturday, March 12, 2022, in his Illinois home. He was 66 years old. A prolific author, researcher, lecturer, and popular media personality, Dr. Cass will be remembered for his passionate endorsement of wild medicinal herbs and spices and his belief in the healing power of wild harvested whole foods. His most lauded professional accomplishment was his extensive research and writing on the curative properties of oil of wild oregano, which earned him the moniker “Dr. Oregano” among patients, associates, and his legion of fans. Dr. Cass graduated from the Des Moines School of Osteopathic Medicine in 1984, finishing at the top of his class in osteopathic manipulation and holistic medicine. He studied under several of the top osteopathic physicians of the day before beginning an apprenticeship with Dr. Maur, founder of the renowned Maur Preventive Medical Center in Zion, Illinois. Dr. Maur took young Dr. Cass under his wing and taught him how to start and run a thriving preventive care medical center. In 1985, Dr. Cass started his first clinic in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. In 1986 he then opened the Arlington Preventive Medical Center in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Thousands of patients from all over the Midwest poured into the clinic. About this time, he started developing formulas for his own line of vitamins. From that point on, Dr. Cass worked tirelessly to provide natural products and knowledge of those products to the world through his books, lectures and many hundreds of media appearances. He leaves to us a vast library of knowledge in book and video format that informs us how to safely use wild edible plants from the earth to live a joyous, healthy life.Dr. Cass’s life's work will be cherished and he will be dearly missed by his three children; Surriah, Maryam and Ali Igram, as well as by his seven grandchildren; Jameela, Ayesha, Ibrahim, Muhammad, Yusuf, Maryam, and Maya, and by his five siblings; Hassan, Jamiely, Suehila, Abdullah, and Surria.

    Send us Fan Mail

Lisa is joined by Wyatt Forte who talks about his memoir, Those Not So Little Voices: From Adolescent Psychosis to Wellness and Empowerment

SummaryIn this conversation, Lisa Davis and Wyatt Forte discuss Wyatt's personal experience with mental illness, specifically hearing voices and dealing with paranoia. Wyatt shares his journey from the onset of his symptoms at a young age to his diagnosis and treatment. He discusses the impact of his parents' divorce and the fear and trauma associated with his experiences. Wyatt also provides tips for dealing with voices and hallucinations, emphasizing the importance of seeking professional help and finding coping mechanisms. In this conversation, Wyatt Forte discusses his book 'Those Not So Little Voices' and shares his experiences with mental illness. The conversation covers the importance of physical activity in managing mental health, the lack of resources for mental illness in children, strategies for avoiding arguments with someone experiencing mental illness, the importance of building a supportive community, the benefits of cognitive behavioral therapy, and grounding techniques for overwhelm and anxiety.
    Takeaways
    • Mental illness can have a significant impact on relationships, causing stress and strain on both the individual and their loved ones.
    • The onset of hearing voices can be sudden and terrifying, especially for a young child who may not understand what is happening.
    • The fear of speaking out about mental illness and the stigma associated with it can prevent individuals from seeking help and support.
    • The journey to a diagnosis and effective treatment for mental illness can be complex and may require trying different medications and therapies.
    • The disappearance of voices and symptoms may bring mixed emotions, as individuals may struggle to define their identity without the presence of their illness.
    • It is important to challenge stigmatizing beliefs and misconceptions about mental illness and to promote understanding and empathy. Physical activity can have significant benefits for mental health, even though it may initially seem unrelated to mental illness.
    • There is a lack of resources and support for children with mental illness, particularly for disorders like schizophrenia that typically present later in life.
    • When interacting with someone experiencing mental illness, it is important to avoid arguments and instead provide support and understanding.
    • Building a community of understanding and supportive individuals is crucial for individuals with mental illness.
    • Cognitive behavioral therapy can be helpful in managing mental illness and building skills for long-term well-being.
    • Grounding techniques, such as focusing on reality and naming tangible things, can help manage overwhelm and anxiety.
    • The book 'Those Not So Little Voices' by Wyatt Forte is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble's website.
