  • The Character Gap: How Good Are We?
Are you a good person? Can you be better?Character is our moral fiber. It leads us to think, act and feel in specific ways. Character can be divided into three traits: virtue, vices and a mix of the two. Virtue includes things like honesty, compassion, courage and loyalty. Vices include dishonesty, cruelty and cowardice. It benefits us to strive to live in a world of virtue and be virtuous. Being virtuous makes the world a better place. We find people of good character as inspiration. Character is plastic and can be changed. Moral reminders help us get back on track. Look to paradigms of living a virtuous life and try to follow that example. Listen as Dr. Christian Miller joins Dr. Pamela Peeke to share how we can improve our character. Sponsor: Smarty Pants Vitamins

  • Stress Urinary Incontinence: No More Leaks
Leaking when you work out? This will help.Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) gets in the way of physical activity for women of a certain age. The small release of urine during activity can keep you out of the gym. Your pelvic floor muscles are easy to forget about until they weaken. Putting a pad down to catch the urine doesn’t resolve the muscle weakness. Those muscles need training so they’re strong enough to control urine flow. Kegel exercises are the contraction and relaxation of vaginal and anal muscles. You can do them in your chair a few times a day and no one will be the wiser. There are other exercises for strengthening your pelvic floor. Aligning your breathing with contractions of your pelvic floor may strengthen the muscles even more. You should have a noticeable difference in your pelvic floor in eight to twelve weeks. You have to do the exercises daily. Listen as Dr. Sara Terrell joins Dr. Pamela Peeke to discuss SUI and how to strenghten your pelvic floor muscles. Sponsor: Smarty Pants Vitamins

  • Personal Space: Get Out of My Bubble
Why is it so hard to understand personal space?Personal space is the invisible bubble around you that you don’t want invaded without invitation.  Invasions of personal space fire certain neurons in your brain. You have to shrink up your personal space for intimate contact. Your neurons rev up if you feel your personal space is threatened. Personal space boundaries are always in flux. Those in power tend to have closer boundaries. This is why the boss doesn’t mind leaning in to explain things. The folks lower on the power hierarchy usually want more space. Cyberspace has changed the boundaries. We also wrap personal space around our belongings. You don’t want someone driving too close to your car or touching your purse without invitation. Perceptive or neurological disorders can confuse perception of personal space. Dyspraxia can affect motor skills from confusion about one’s personal space. Listen as Dr. Michael Graziano joins Dr. Pamela Peeke to discuss how personal space works. Sponsor: Smarty Pants Vitamins

  • Addressing Rough Patches in Long-Term Relationships
Long-term relationships can have rough spots. What causes them and what can you do about them? Many marriages end in divorce. We live longer than the previous generation. We want close marriages with communication, vulnerability and connection. But, relationships hit rough patches, some rougher than others. Those who are more educated and have more money tend to have the lowest rate of divorce. Financial arguments and time deficiencies in the relationship seem to be less likely. Money, Money, Money Money is a major cause for divorce. It attracts anxiety. “If you get what you want, how do I get what I want?” Many families don’t cover a framework for understanding money, making it even more difficult. Earnings are also attached to a feeling of personal value, which can lead to challenges when one partner earns more. A couple must think about the big picture together. Consider what collective goals you have with your combined earnings. Work together to use those resources in a way you both like. Growing Old Together Aging is tough. People become self-critical as pounds appear, hair disappears and wrinkles develop. Don’t encroach on your partner’s autonomy when you notice these changes. The emotional connection should be stronger than your concern about aging bodies. Your Part in Unhappiness If you feel unhappy in your relationship, the first place to look is within. Examine what you are bringing to the situation. Your character, temperament, history and mindset all join you in the relationship. Looking at your own story gives you great power and freedom. Listen as Dr. Daphne de Marneffe joins Dr. Pamela Peeke to shed light on relationship rough patches and how to get through them. Sponsor: Smarty Pants Vitamins
