Ever notice how class combos seem stuck in place these days? In this episode of Hey Dancer, I dive into why choreography has become so stationary and upper-body focused. Inspired by an episode of a Netflix show (Explained) that unexpectedly helped to connect the dots for me, I explore…
…and how these trends are reshaping the way we dance in class and beyond.
Plus, I highlight choreographers whose movement still commands space and energy, proving that dance can be both powerful and expansive.
Let's break it down and rediscover the joy (and importance) of traveling across the studio floor!
The Netflix show referenced in the episode is: Explained ("Dance Crazes")

The question I get asked most often since I debuted my Return to Dance journey is: Why did you quit dance?
As a professional teen dancer, I seemed to have it all — a bright future, a love for performing, lots of bookings, and endless possibilities.
But at just 19, I made the decision to walk away.
The reasons behind it were layered and complex.
From the common fears and pressures most dancers will find relatable, to a growing passion for another art form that began to compete with my love for dance, to a deeply personal and shameful secret that made me question where I belonged…
In this episode, I tap back into my teenage brain, dig deep, get super personal, and finally answer the question that's been following me (in many ways) for decades.

I've been vocal on my social media about the rise of acro in dance — the flips, tricks, and tumbling passes that seem to dominate competitions and dance shows today. But here's the twist: I have a surprising history with acro myself.
In this episode, I share my personal journey — from my days as a Star Search finalist, where acro was used as a secret weapon, to my experience training at the Joffrey Ballet, dance auditions, and more!
I'll dive into why acro felt special then, and why I worry about its role in dance now. Is acro enhancing storytelling, or has it become a distraction? I'll also unpack how acro has evolved, the blurred lines between dance and gymnastics, and why I believe artistry should always come first.
If you know me from social media, this might shock you — but it's time to tell the full story! Whether you're a dance parent, dancer, or simply someone curious about the changing face of dance, this episode is for you.
So… am I anti-acro (as many have suggested) after all? Or is there more to this story? Let's find out.
