What was it like to be a shepherd over 2000 years ago? Tending flocks, with agriculture, formed the basis of the Holy Land’s economy, and sheep raised on the hillsides around Bethlehem may well have been destined for temple sacrifices in Jerusalem, only six miles to the north. Let’s continue describing a shepherd's life. Enjoy this Encore Presentation!

Much of the art surviving from Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire is Christian art, although this is in large part because the stability and continuity of church ownership has preserved Christian art better than secular works. Enjoy this ART presentation!

Some of Israel's great heroes were shepherds: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David. Both Psalm 23 and Jesus compare God's care to that of a Good Shepherd. But in the first century, it seems, shepherds, specifically, hireling shepherds, had a rather unsavory reputation. But what about the New Testament shepherds of Luke’s Christmas infancy narrative? Divisions did not appear in the original texts of Judeo-Christian bibles. The long quest for ways to point more precisely to biblical content that led to a book-chapter-verse system began in the middle ages and eventually evolved, through trial and error, into the system or method we use today.

Jacques Cartier reached the end of navigation at a large island in the St. Lawrence River. Here he found another Amerindian village, called Hochelaga, on the site of the present city of Montreal. From the height behind it, to which he gave the name Mont Real—better known today as Mont Royal or Mount Royal in English—he could see the foaming Lachine Rapids blocking the way to the upper waters of the St. Lawrence. Enjoy this HISTORICAL JESUS Extra — The STORY of AMERICA.
