Celebrated by many Western Christian denominations, including Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans, and other Protestant Churches such as Methodists and Moravians, The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord commemorates Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, marking the start of His public ministry and the first manifestation of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). It's a liturgical feast that concludes the Christmas season, typically observed on the first Sunday after Epiphany (January 6th) in Western Christianity, bridging to Ordinary Time, and it signifies the beginning of Christian life through baptism, uniting believers with Christ.

The Popham Colony Site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The exact site of the Popham Colony was lost until 1888 when a plan for the site was found in the General Archives in Spain. This plan exactly matches the location at Sabino Head near Maine's Popham Beach State Park. Later archaeology in 1994 confirmed the location and the accuracy of the plan. Annual feast honors the power and significance of the name "Jesus," which means "God saves" or "Savior" in Hebrew/Aramaic. Observed during first week of January using varying dates & names by Catholics and some Protestant denominations (Anglican, Episcopal, and Lutheran), the invocation is rooted in the biblical account where the angel Gabriel instructs both Mary and Joseph to name the child Jesus. While the feast focuses on the primary name "Jesus," the Bible uses many other venerated names and titles to describe Christ's nature and mission. Devotion to the Holy Name was popularized in the 15th century by the Franciscan friar Saint Bernardine of Siena, who encouraged people to place the Greek monogram of Jesus' name, IHS (from the first three letters of the Greek word for Jesus), on their doors. The feast was extended to the entire Church in 1721 by Pope Innocent XIII. Ee150.

Our reading presents the New Testament book of Matthew 2:1-12 followed by the classic carol “We Three Kings.” Three Kings' Day is a Christian feast that annually falls on January 6th (also known as Epiphany). It is a special date for many Christians as it's when the faithful celebrate how a bright star in the sky led the Magi - also known as the Three Wise Men - to visit the baby Jesus after he had been born.
