Three Kings' Day - also known as Epiphany, is a special date for many Christians as it's when the faithful celebrate how a bright star in the sky led the Magi - also known as the Three Wise Men - to visit the baby Jesus after he had been born. But, how do we separate myth from fact in ancient history? How do we do this when it comes down to one of the most beloved and well-known stories of all time—The Nativity? Let’s join Scott Rank of the History Unplugged podcast and find out.

The Sagadahoc Settlement—also known as the Popham Colony—was established in 1607 and was located in the present-day town of Phippsburg, Maine, near the mouth of the Kennebec River. It was founded a few months after its rival, the colony at Jamestown. The Popham Colony was the second settlement in the region that would eventually become known as New England. The first colony was St. Croix Island, near what is now the town of Calais. St. Croix Island was settled initially in June 1604, then moved in 1605 by Samuel de Champlain to the Bay of Fundy. The Popham Colony was the vanguard of a new colonization model for the English, the result of rights stripped from nobleman and redistributed to new corporate entities. After years of sailors kidnapping natives off the coast of modern day Maine to train as interpreters, Sir Ferdinando Gorges and Sir John Popham returned them hoping the fair treatment given to their captives, will foster good will with their native communities. Coming just over halfway through the Twelve Days of Christmas, the New Year brought another important medieval Christian feast-day: The first of January is the eighth day after Christmas, which meant it was the day when Jesus of Nazareth was circumcised according to Jewish law.

January First is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics (meaning that Mass attendance is required), also observed by some Protestants (Anglicans & Lutherans) as a related feast. On this day, the Church proclaims Mary as Theotokos (God-bearer), affirming that the Son she conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit is truly God and truly man. The Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is thus a liturgical celebration observed on January 1st and marks the octave of Christmas, celebrating her divine motherhood.

The word testament in the expression "New Testament" refers to a new covenant that Christians believe completes or fulfils the Mosaic covenant or the old covenant that the national god of Israel made with the people of Israel on Mount Sinai through Moses, described in the books of the Old Testament. Christians traditionally view this new covenant as being prophesied in the Hebrew Bible's Book of Jeremiah. The third of the New Testament's four canonical Gospels is Luke. It tells of the origins, birth, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. The author is anonymous but the traditional view that Luke the Evangelist was the companion of Paul is still put forward. The most probable date for its composition is around AD 80–110, and there is evidence that it was still being revised well into the 2nd century. Enjoy this ENCORE Presentation!
