Reactionary leaders, reactionary popes, papal jiujitsu and much more will be the topic of today’s episode. Today we are joined for a third time by Will Clark, host of The Grey History Podcast. That’s grey with an “e.” In Grey History, Will discusses how history is not black and white, good guys and bad guys. The French Revolution is a great example of history being in the gray area. In this episode, Will and I will look at the motivations and incentives of the actors in the Church and revolutionary French government. Will and I will look at the French Revolution and what role the Church had in the Revolution. This is a more complicated topic that it appears. There was fabulously wealthy clergy and poor clergy. There was up and coming clergy and there were entrenched clergy. Each of these groups had their own incentives and goals. Let’s explore them.

The papacy almost wasn’t. In the last years of the 18th century, the entire idea of the Popes of Rome as leaders of the Roman Catholic Church was down to its very last chip and was a close as you could possibly get to walking away from the table.

There was a major argument in the church whether the laity should participate along side the clergy of Rome in electing a new pope. For a time, it was ruled that there should be universal suffrage for papal elections. By universal suffrage, I mean only the nobility and the power of papal elections would revert back to only the clergy in not too long, but one step forward, right?
