It’s one of history’s most renowned works of art--the Sistine Chapel ceiling opened to the public for the first time on this day in 1512. Painted by Michelangelo, the greatest of the Italian Renaissance artists, the epic frescoes, which are divided into nine panels depicting biblical history, took several years to complete.
