With the U.S. Supreme Court headed back to work in early October, we look back 225 years to this day in 1789, when the Judiciary Act, which created the court, was signed by President George Washington. Washington nominated John Jay to preside as chief justice of the court, which met for the first time in February 1790 in New York City.

But on this day in 1953, Los Angeles opened the first “four-level” interchange in the world, which has since become known as a modern engineering marvel. Connecting the 101 and 110 freeways, “The Stack,” as its known, includes 32 lanes of traffic weaving in numerous directions.
