  • Mike Neville: The gifted 'super recognisers' who can never forget a face
Have you ever seen a face in a crowd and thought to yourself,  I know that person?
It's a skill possessed by only one or two percent of the population.
But it has real uses, and police are being urged to use super recognisers and make this talent a recognised part of forensic intelligence.
Mike Neville is with the UK's Association of super-recognisers. He helped to set up a unit within Scotland yard, and is now consulting all over the world.
He joins Tim Dower to explain how it all works.

  • Murray Olds: Australian correspondent on Sydney's Covid-19 outbreak
Sydney's Covid-19 outbreak continues to spread.
A new cluster in the western suburbs has the area on high alert, while masks became mandatory over the weekend.
Australian Correspondent Murray Olds told Tim Dower more than 2000 people who popped into a bottle shop in the suburb of Berala over the Christmas period, will need to be tested.
He says one person went there with the virus and didn't know they were sick.
NSW reported eight new coronavirus cases on Sunday while Victoria reported three new cases.

  • Michael Baker: Epidemiologist on the new UK virus variant reaching New Zealand
An epidemiologist says it was inevitable for cases of the new Covid-19 variant to be detected in New Zealand.
So far six cases of the new strain have been picked up during routine testing.
All of them are in managed isolation.
Otago University's Professor Michael Baker told Tim Dower given how rapidly it's spreading through the UK, it was only a matter of time.
"The new cases are a bigger risk as people will be more infectious during flights and in managed isolation facilities."
From January 15, travellers coming into the country from the UK and US will have to return a negative Covid-19 result, 72 hours before they can get on a plane.
It comes as six cases of the new UK variant have been detected in managed isolation in this country.
Michael Baker says it will help to minimise the likelihood of another community outbreak.
"If a person tests positive,  they'll have to delay their travel.
This will be an added incentive for those looking to come home to be more cautious."

  • Meg de Ronde: Amnesty International calls for independent inquiry into New Zealand prisons
Police say a "complex investigation" that could take several months is under way into the six-day riot at Waikeria Prison, which ended yesterday.
The 16 inmates who destroyed the top jail surrendered peacefully at 12.37pm and now the facility is unusable, the Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis says.
Rioting began after fires were lit in the exercise yard on Tuesday afternoon. The inmates took over the jail in less than 24 hours.
Advocates say they were protesting against unhygienic and dehumanising conditions - claims vehemently denied by Corrections.
Police were not in a position to comment on any charges the inmates might face last night, a spokesperson said.
And with the top jail being treated as a crime scene, Corrections were not able to comment specifically to avoid prejudging the outcome.
Barrister Gary Gotlieb says police investigators face a strenuous task.
"We don't know the facts yet and it's going to take time to work out what actually did happen," he said.
"If [the inmates] just got themselves on the roof and not really hurt or threatened prison officers, we're getting more to the property type of offending.
"We are going to have to wait and see what the police are going to charge them with. It's going to be a matter of watching the space."
The prison went into lockdown soon after rioting began last week, with 200 prisoners soon evacuated from the top jail and taken to other prisons.
The near week-long riot only ended after Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi met the inmates.
"They were ready to come down," Waititi said. "Naturally, they were tired and hungry but still very determined to see change."
Most of the 16 were members of the Mongols and Comancheros gangs, with five of the men deported from Australia.
Department of Corrections chief executive Jeremy Lightfoot says they are not aware of any complaints made by the men in relation to their living conditions.
"There is no excuse for what these men have done," he said.
"The actions by the men exposed them, other prisoners, our staff, and emergency services to significant danger."
Davis does not believe the inmates were rioting over living conditions, he told the media yesterday afternoon.
The minister thanked emergency services, Corrections staff, kaumātua, and tangata whenua for their efforts, support and guidance over the standoff.
Davis said he chose not to speak out during the siege because he did not want to encourage similar behaviour from other prisoners, saying the inmates wanted political attention from the rioting.
Asked about his apparent lack of communication amid the rioting, Davis said his role was to leave the response to the experts.
Corrections incident controller Jeanette Burns said staff tried to end the rioting on Saturday night but were met with force by the inmates.
After retreating to prevent injury, Corrections received word about 11.30am yesterday that the inmates were ready to surrender and just over an hour later all were off the roof and secured.
"At all times, Corrections were in control of the situation," Burns said.
Two reviews have been commissioned into the rioting, Lightfoot said.
The first is an operational review by the chief custodial officer, which should be completed within three months.
The second, by the office of the chief inspector, should be completed within six to nine months.
ActionStation, People Against Prisons Aotearoa, and JustSpeak called on police not to press additional charges against the inmates.
They said the men were protesting against breaches of human rights and Corrections had to address the issues to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
Waikeria Prison rioters surrender after six-day stand-off; jail conditions not reason for unrest, says Kelvin Davis.
The Human Rights Commission has called for an inquiry, with Chief Commissioner Paul Hunt saying the...

  • Richard Arnold: More Republicans join President Trump's effort to overturn election
A growing number of Republican lawmakers are joining President Donald Trump's extraordinary effort to overturn the election, pledging to reject the results when Congress meets next week to count the Electoral College votes and certify President-elect Joe Biden's win.
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas on Saturday announced a coalition of 11 senators and senators-elect who have been enlisted for Trump's effort to subvert the will of American voters.
This follows the declaration from Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri, who was the first to buck Senate leadership by saying he would join with House Republicans in objecting to the state tallies during Wednesday's joint session of Congress.
Trump's refusal to accept his defeat is tearing the party apart as Republicans are forced to make consequential choices that will set the contours of the post-Trump era. Hawley and Cruz are both among potential 2024 presidential contenders.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had urged his party not to try to overturn what nonpartisan election officials have concluded was a free and fair vote.
The 11 senators largely acknowledged Saturday they will not succeed in preventing Biden from being inaugurated on Jan. 20 after he won the Electoral College 306-232. But their challenges, and those from House Republicans, represent the most sweeping effort to undo a presidential election outcome since the Civil War.
“We do not take this action lightly,” Cruz and the other senators said in a joint statement.
They vowed to vote against certain state electors on Wednesday unless Congress appoints an electoral commission to immediately conduct an audit of the election results. They are zeroing in on the states where Trump has raised unfounded claims of voter fraud. Congress is unlikely to agree to their demand.
The group, which presented no new evidence of election problems, includes Sens. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Steve Daines of Montana, John Kennedy of Louisiana, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Mike Braun of Indiana, and Sens.-elect Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Roger Marshall of Kansas, Bill Hagerty of Tennessee and Tommy Tuberville of Alabama.
Biden's transition spokesman, Mike Gwin, dismissed the effort as a “stunt” that won't change the fact that Biden will be sworn in Jan. 20.
Trump, the first president to lose a reelection bid in almost 30 years, has attributed his defeat to widespread voter fraud, despite the consensus of nonpartisan election officials and even Trump's attorney general that there was none. Of the roughly 50 lawsuits the president and his allies have filed challenging election results, nearly all have been dismissed or dropped. He’s also lost twice at the U.S. Supreme Court.
The days ahead are expected to do little to change the outcome.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, the top Democrat on the panel overseeing the Electoral College count. said the Republican effort to create a federal commission “to supersede state certifications" is wrong.
“It is undemocratic. It is un-American. And fortunately it will be unsuccessful. In the end, democracy will prevail,” she said in a statement.
The convening of the joint session to count the Electoral College votes is usually routine. While objections have surfaced before — in 2017, several House Democrats challenged Trump's win — few have approached this level of intensity.
On the other side of the Republican divide, several senators spoke out Saturday against Cruz and Hawley's effort.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said in a statement that she will vote to affirm the election and urged colleagues in both parties to join her in “maintaining confidence" in elections "so that we ensure we have the continued trust of the American people.”
Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania said a “fundamental, defining feature of a democratic republic is the right of the people to elect their own leaders.” He said the...
