  • Kyle Jamieson: It's been a good year for the Black Caps
What a year the Black Caps have had.
They're test championships, beating India in June in a stunning victory.
And of course, the incredible T20 World Cup they just had – only to fall at the last hurdle against a very strong Australian team.
This year the summer schedule starting January 1st includes Bangladesh, Australia and South Africa.
    Kyle Jamieson joined Tim Dower.

  • SwimTastic CEO: Mark Bone says kids having missed lessons is worrying
Confidence in the water may have taken a Covid-induced hit.
Swim schools are concerned kids have missed out on more than three months of lessons, due to Auckland's lockdown.
SwimTastic CEO Mark Bone told Tim Dower statistics show swimming lessons between the ages of one and four, can reduce drownings in New Zealand by 88 per cent.
“With all of the fact of Covid and the closures of swimming lessons, it is really a very disconcerting and concerning time for people going out there now and enjoying what we are loving here in New Zealand.”

  • Murray Olds: Tasmanian bouncy castle tragedy claims 6th life
Tasmania's bouncy castle tragedy has claimed a sixth life.
Chace Harrison died in hospital yesterday afternoon.
Nine children were on the castle when a gust of wind sent it 10 metres into the air, during year-end celebrations at Devonport's Hillcrest Primary School on Thursday.
Two children remain in a critical condition in Royal Hobart Hospital, while another is in recovery at home.
Australian correspondent Murray Olds told Tim Dower the small town of Devonport has been left reeling by the tragedy.
“It’s a small place, it’s not a big community, and to have this number of young people just torn away from it, it’s unimaginable the level of grief down there.”

  • Tai Tokerau Border Control: Everyone came through double vaxxed
The Tai Tokerau Border Control is claiming success.
The fixed checkpoints run by police and iwi, which were set up near Waipu and Maungaturoto, have been dismantled - replaced with spot checkpoints and roving patrols.
Tai Tokerau Border Control Regional Co-ordinator Reuben Taipiri told Tim Dower their goal was to stop every car, but they're happy with how they did.
“Everybody came through double vaxxed, 99% came through double vaxxed or had their negative test, and that just says the campaign that we drove out there was a successful one.”

  • UK correspondent: Vincent McAviney says it feels like Christmas is cancelled
A sense of impending doom is hanging over Britain in the build up to Christmas.
More than 12-thousand new Omicron cases are confirmed in the UK, as Covid numbers soar close to 83-thousand.
That's down from the record highs of the past couple of days, but up week on week.
The Government's Cobra emergency committee sat down about two hours ago.
UK correspondent Vincent McAviney told Tim Dower there's a feeling Christmas has been cancelled.
“Where I am right now, just off Oxford Street, which is normally, on any given day, the busiest shopping street in Europe, well in the build-up to Christmas it’s absolutely carnage normally, and it is deathly quiet.”

  • Far North Mayor: John Carter says checks will still happen to keep everyone safe
People will still be checked as they head to Northland, despite the region's two fixed checkpoints being taken down this morning.
The checkpoints, which were set up near Waipu and Maungaturoto, are being replaced with spot checkpoints and roving patrols.
Far North Mayor John Carter told Tim Dower they still want to check people to ensure they're safe.
“And that’s why we’re just asking them to just abide by the rules, be vaccinated or do your 72-hour check, and you’re welcome to come on up and just be with us and we’ll enjoy having your company.”

  • Chris Archer: Joiy Wines co-founder on expanding their canned wine market
Wine in a box was enough to send some people into a fit.
And then there were screw tops and now wine in cans to really tap into the millennial market.
Joiy Wines was the first New Zealand winemaker to export wine in a can, shifting about 700,000 tins around the world per year.
But that could soon be 7 million with their expansion plan in mind.
Joiy Wines winemaker co-founder Chris Archer told Tim Dower the wine industry is quite adaptive, especially with packaging in mind.
“That’s gonna be a real mindset, not just for the wine industry, but for all industries producing goods that we all have to be mindful of the packaging and the end use and the circle economy of that.”

  • Richard Arnold: Family of Halyna Hutchins mourns slain cinematographer as investigation into 'Rust' film set shooting continues
Family, peers and community members of Halyna Hutchins mourned the cinematographer's untimely death after the 42-year-old was killed on the film set of "Rust" from a firearm mishap.
Her husband Matthew Hutchins tweeted Friday that the loss was "enormous."
"Halyna inspired us all with her passion and vision, and her legacy is too meaningful to encapsulate in words," he tweeted. "Our loss is enormous, and we ask that the media please respect my family's privacy as we process our grief. We thank everyone for sharing images and stories of her life."
In addition, her sister offered words of grief in an interview with the Kyiv Post on Friday.
"I cannot comprehend (her passing)," said Svetlana Androsovych, who currently lives in Indonesia. "I loved her very much ... I was very proud of her and she was my role model. We were always close and remained in touch, despite the distance."
"This loss is a great grief for our family, and I see how hard it is for our parents," she added. "Hopefully, time will ease our heartache."
CNN has reached out to Androsovych but not yet heard back.
The comments add to the fond memories of Hutchins, who was killed when actor and producer Alec Baldwin discharged a prop gun on a film set Thursday in New Mexico.
A candlelight vigil for Hutchins brought out hundreds of mourners Saturday evening in the state.
"I would've been lucky to do another movie with a person like that," said Lane Looper, a crew member on the "Rust" film set. "She was a wonderful mom and wife and was just a wonderful soul, and I really hope more people like her exist."
The shooting occurred as the film crew was rehearsing a scene at the Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico. The film's assistant director, David Halls, handed a prop gun to Baldwin and yelled "cold gun," a remark meant to indicate the weapon didn't have live rounds, according to an affidavit for a search warrant for the movie set filed by the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office and obtained by CNN affiliate KOAT.
According to the affidavit, Baldwin was handed one of three prop guns that were set up in a cart by an armorer for the movie. Halls did not know there were live rounds in the gun, the affidavit said.
When Baldwin fired the gun, a live round hit Hutchins, 42, in the chest and wounded director Joel Souza, 48, who was nearby, according to the affidavit. Hutchins was pronounced dead at the hospital after being airlifted.
    Gun experts question tragedy
The shooting has raised critical questions from gun experts looking into how the tragic incident occurred.
"There's no reason to have had a firearm that was capable of discharging live ammo on the set," Steve Wolf, a firearms safety expert, told CNN on Saturday. "A prop gun is a gun that's been specifically manufactured for shooting blanks, not bullets. In fact, the bullets won't fit into a gun that's been modified properly, only blanks will fit into it.
"And that's a safeguard to ensure that live ammo is not loaded into guns that are used on set. So if you don't use the right type of gun, you're not going to get the safety benefit that's been engineered into it," Wolf said.
Before the shooting, some crew members quit over safety concerns on set -- including gun inspections and Covid-19 protocols not being followed, according to the Los Angeles Times and other media reports.
Three crew members who were on the set last weekend told the Los Angeles Times there were two accidental prop gun discharges before Thursday's fatal shooting. On October 16, Baldwin's stunt double unintentionally fired rounds after he was told the gun was "cold," two of the crew members, who witnessed the discharges, told the newspaper.
The film's production company told Deadline in a statement that it was not notified of official complaints regarding weapon or prop safety on set.
"We will be conducting an internal review of our procedures while production...

  • Wendy Hewson: Recruiter says it could be a good time to seek greener pastures if you're an employee
A top recruiter says it could be a good time to look for greener pastures if you’re an employee.
Recruitment firm PERSOLKELLY says working remotely, focus on health and wellbeing and money are the top three most important things for job seekers.
General Manager Wendy Hewson told Tim Dower their report gave a really clear message on how nearly three out of five employees have changed work priorities due to Covid.
“It’s more around flexibility, the ability to work from home one, two or three days a week maybe, a much better health and well-being programme in place, and of course increased salary.”
