Edwin B. Henderson II is the author of the book, The Grandfather of Black Basketball: The Life and Times of Dr. E. B. Henderson. Henderson is the grandson and namesake of Dr. E. B. Henderson who organized the first athletic league for Blacks, introduced basketball to Black people on a wide-scale, organized basis, and founded associations to train and organize Black officials and referees. He also wrote and co-edited the first Spalding publication that highlighted the exploits of African American participation in sports and authored The Negro in Sports. Outside of athletics, Henderson was instrumental in founding the first rural branch of the NAACP, advocated for school desegregation, and held executive board positions with multiple NAACP branches.

Overlooked for decades, Henderson and his wife, Nikki, began nominating Dr. E. B. Henderson to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005, and after eight years, EB was finally enshrined in 2013as a contributor. The Grandfather of Black Basketball gives long-overdue recognition to a sports pioneer, civil rights activist, author, educator, and pragmatic humanitarian who fought his entire life to improve opportunities for youth through athletics.

On this episode Mike & Ed discuss the extraordinary contributions of Dr. E.B. Henderson, a pioneering figure in the realm of basketball and a dedicated civil rights activist. We delve into the historical significance of his establishment of the first sanctioned athletic league for African Americans, which enabled equitable access to sports when existing white leagues refused participation. Through the lens of his grandson, Edwin B. Henderson II, we explore the impact of Dr. Henderson's initiatives, including the formation of the Eastern Board of Officials, which facilitated organized sports within the African American community. Matthew Bowman and Wayne LeCheminant are the co-authors of the new book, Game Changers: AJ Dybantsa, BYU, and the Struggle for the Soul of Basketball.

In one of the most unlikely coups in college basketball history, a religious school in Utah signed basketball phenomenon AJ Dybantsa. He will play for Brigham Young University - hardly the sort of basketball powerhouse that typically attracts exceptional and non-Mormon players like him.

Game Changers explores how BYU managed this stunning feat. A year before signing Dybantsa, the university lured coaching star Kevin Young from the NBA to run its basketball program. In the decade before, court rulings and institutional reform put money at the forefront of college sports in ways the American public had never seen. And for generations before that, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints built a theological structure and institutional commitment to basketball that put the sport front and center at BYU.

Nick Haber is in his second season as the Girls’ Junior Varsity Basketball Coach at Strongsville High School in the state of Ohio. He has led the Mustang JV team to back to back winning seasons. Mike Jagacki is a Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach at SUNY New Paltz where he helped lead the Hawks to the NCAA D3 Tournament in 2024 and to the SUNYAC Tournament in each of his 4 seasons. Prior to arriving at New Paltz, Jagacki spent 3 years as a Video Coordinator and Assistant Coach for the Women’s Basketball Program at Hofstra University helping the Pride to a Semi-Final appearance in the CAA Tournament and the first Top 5 conference finish in 5 years.

Before Hofstra, Mike spent time as Boys’ Basketball Associate Head Coach at Combine Academy, a Post-Grad program in North Carolina. He started his career as a Boys’ Basketball Assistant Coach at his alma mater, Middlesex High School in New Jersey. During this time Mike also opened his own AAU Program, TrueHoops.

Caleb South is currently the Boys’ Varsity Basketball Assistant Coach at Troy High School in the state of Ohio. He also is the founder of CPS Training where he has trained more than 50 D1 and D2 athletes.

Caleb previously served as the Girls’ Varsity Basketball Head Coach at his alma mater Bethel High School where his team won their first league title in 36 years and went 28-19 during his two seasons as the head coach. He began his coaching career at Tri Village High School as a varsity assistant.

Caleb scored 1,700 points as a high school player at Bethel (OH) High School before injuries cut short his playing career which led him into coaching.
