In this episode of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the netminding situation in Washington. Looking back on the last couple of years it feels like any netminder would be an upgrade considering the inconsistent play of Vitek Vanecek and Ilya Samsonov.
Mac then went on and totally cut bait and parted ways with Ilya and Vitek.
In July on the first day of free agency Brian Maclellan went out and swung for the fences and connected by signing reigning Stanley Cup winning goalie Darcy Kuemper.
Mac wasn't done yet as he went on and signed a backup goalie in Charlie Lindgren. A goalie that doesn't have a lot of NHL experience but has a good trajectory.
So, on paper it seems like the Capitals are in a good position in the netminding department, but are they really? Now granted Darcy came off a great season winning the Stanley Cup with Colorado, but his career is one full of a lengthy list of the injured list. Most recently his eye injury last season. Can Darcy stay healthy, and can he continue to play well with the Caps not the Avs in front of him?
Darcy was 37-12 last season which is great, but in 20-21 he was 10-11, in the 19-20 season he was 16-11 and in the 18-19 season he was 27-20. So was last season the high-water mark for Darcy or is he just getting started?
If Darcy gets injured did they do the right thing by signing an unknown commodity in Charlie or should they have gone with a more established veteran.
My fingers are crossed and hoping for a vast improvement in the netminding department in the coming season.
