  • HTL 019: Disconnect to Connect! How to Break Up with Social Media, with Johan Versteegh

#019 - The age of social media is brilliant, advantageous, and incredibly fun. There are so many wonderful benefits because of it.

But there are also a few negatives and one of them is addiction.

Addiction traditionally means a physical need for something, meaning there are physical side effects if you don’t get your “fix”.

And yes, this can happen with social media.

If you are beginning to realize that you find yourself needing to check in on your social media accounts, you fall asleep with your phone in your hand, you feel lonely or lost if you are away too long, it is affecting your productivity, or your friends or family are giving you hints that you aren’t really present when you are with them...you might have a problem.

Johan Versteegh is the founder of Social Media Breakup and he has a 6-step formula to help you recognize the signs, realize what void you might be trying to fill, and reconnect with yourself and the real world.

  • HTL 018: How to Make a Budget and Get Out of Debt, with Jason Hoschouer

#018 -This podcast is a huge topic! And by huge I mean it is sooooo important.

It is all about debt, how being in debt enslaves you, and how it is 100% possible to turn it around in a surprisingly short time.

It starts with simply deciding to get control of it, creating a budget, and staying focused and disciplined.

It is NOT hard friends. It just requires organization and persistence!

I am joined by the very warm and entertaining, Jason Hoschouer, who wears many hats: husband, father, author, blogger, podcast host, police officer, but his passion these days is on being a personal financial coach.

He shares his story of how, once upon a time, he was almost $78K in debt. But he got out!

In this interview he tells you he did it, talks about the 5 STEPS you need to take to achieve it yourself (there are only 5), and he wants you to know that you absolutely can do it too!

  • HTL 017: Breaking Out: How To Overcome FEAR, with Sarah Sherman, M.Ed.

#17- As you now know, How To Life is a brand that is dedicated to helping take the fear out of some of the stuff you may be encountering in adulthood.

I think you will really enjoy this podcast topic which is about fear in general and how to get yourself in the right mindset to step forward and overcome it.

It is not about just closing your eyes and jumping. It is about thoughtful and mindful small steps to get you past the darkness, past the barrier, and into the light.

Today, I am joined by Sarah Sherman, M.Ed who has been involved in education for over 20 years. She has worn many hats including that of teacher, principal, director, guidance counselor, and now has started her own Educational consulting and private coaching firm called Lighthouse Approach.

Her goal is to bring light to others and help organizations as well as individuals find and learn new tools to enhance their successes.

And getting past your fear is the first step in that journey.

This is a great conversation that acknowledges the paralysis that fear can cause but also strives to assure you that can get past it and race forward with a new joy and optimism!

It is my hope that you will find this conversation soothing and encouraging.

  • HTL 016: The NO-Fear Guide to Basic Car Maintenance, with Kiran Gangarum and Jay Kgasago

#016 - Today’s show is an important one. It is a topic that gave me a lot of anxiety when I was younger, my kids have fear about it now, and I think many people are a bit nervous about this, and that is basic car maintenance.

Having a car is awesome. But there are a lot of responsibilities and expenses that come with it. I have talked about some of those in a few MOMINARS on my youtube channel: oil changes, tire pressure, smog check, registration. Pumping your own gas.

I suspect that some of the fear in dealing with these things is the potential expense. A warning light comes on and rather than deal with it, you kind of ignore it hoping it will go away or maybe it is programmed to go on just to get money out of you. And especially if the car seems to be running alright you might have a tendency to ignore it.

And then perhaps you have the impression that mechanics rip you off so you don’t trust what they say.

So who do you trust? What is the truth about car maintenance? How long can your car go before it really breaks down?

Luckily I have a couple of friends who graciously accepted my request to talk about this topic. Kiran Gangarum and  Korombi Kgasago, whom we call Jay for short, are not mechanics themselves, but they are extremely knowledgeable about cars and how to maintain them so you can get the most out of your vehicle for a long time.

Since this is not their livelihood, there is nothing in it for them so you can trust their answers!

You are going to feel a whole lot better knowing what you should do, when to do it, and what to notice and look for in your car’s performance.

  • HTL 015: What to Do and Say when Interacting with the Police, with Lt. Steve Riback

#015 - Most people are law-abiding citizens and don't expect to have an encounter with the police. But sometimes you will find that you are in a situation where you have to interact with them.

This podcast topic came about because a listener was pulled over once for a moving violation and she was a nervous wreck and didn't know what to do.

Others chimed in that although they had never been pulled over, they also wanted to know what to do.

That was a GREAT question and it led to even more questions about etiquette and proper protocol in a variety of situations.

I am grateful that Lt. Steve Riback of the LVMPD graciously accepted my invitation to answer these questions and more.

He also talks about how being a police officer is a high-tension job and one that requires the officer to be alert at all times for any potential threat.

This is such a good podcast that will help you gain some perspective from the officer's point of view and teach you what you can do to help the police do their job and keep both the officers and yourself safe.

#014 - Today is purely an inspirational show. My guest is celebrity artist Pete Castro or as he is known by his moniker, CastroART.

He has made quite a name for himself in the art world. His decision to do this was made later in his adult life, but that didn’t stop him from pursuing his dream.

If you have a dream, or you if you are changing careers or reinventing yourself, whether it is later in life or at the beginning of your adult life, surround yourself with inspiring stories and people who have done it.

  • HTL 013: Drop Fat STAT! A Talk About Fat, Fitness, and Food with Personal Trainers, Tim and Judy Avalos

#013 - This is a topic that I find really fun and so important. But it is something that most people of all ages do not consider at all.

And that is how our body, our immune system, our health, our mental outlook, and our metabolism are affected by the food we eat!

Most of us, nowadays, no longer eat for survival alone. Food is readily available. It is very social. But our food is so calorie-dense and we usually eat without thought, and we eat way more than our bodies actually need.

That, plus a more often-than-naught sedentary lifestyle, has led to some pretty significant health issues and excessive weight in much of our population.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can reset your body and your metabolism. And your mindset.

It starts with a little education like the interview you are about to hear. Then awareness of how you personally are affected by food. And then perhaps the desire to be more mindful about your health, and then the DECISION to make a lifestyle change.

    You Can Do It!

  • HTL 012: Internet and Social Media Safety with Detective Sean Taylor, LVMPD, ICAC Task Force

#012 - The internet has been life-changing and it is a phenomenal technology that enhances our lives in so many ways. I don’t think any of us can imagine life without it now that we have it. But as with everything, there are dangers and we are in ways much more vulnerable to those dangers than before.

If you are a parent of young children or a young person yourself who has never even considered that something as fun as social media could have its dangers, then this podcast will be very illuminating and will help you be more mindful when interacting online.

Detective Sean Taylor of the LVMPD and a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force joins in today to educate and make us aware of things we can do to keep ourselves and our children more cyber-safe.

This information is not designed to cause fear or make you feel vulnerable. Rather the message is to educate you on how to protect yourself and/or your child, how to use and enjoy social media and the benefits of the internet responsibly, and how to be less naïve about some of the stuff out there.

More about Det. Taylor, ICAC, and numbers to call if you need help can be found in the show notes at:
