  • #46. When You’re the One Whose Name is On the Door: The Role of Leadership in Private Practice.

No one tells you this, but your ability to step into the energy of leadership is critical to an effective private practice.

You simply can not be a passive participant - not when you’re the one whose name is on the door.

    So let’s talk about that.

In today’s episode, we’ll explore three of the most important areas where leadership is called for. Among other things, you’ll learn:

    1. What it means to be ‘at cause’ in your business (and why this matters).
    2. Why the ability to recognize, ask for and get what you need is in itself an act of leadership.
    3. What it means to act and think like a CEO.

    And more.

You may not think of yourself as a leader in any way; I get that. But if you’re serious about running a successful private practice, that, too, is a skill you’ll have to get comfortable with. And you will, I’m sure of it.

    Here’s to your learning! :)

    ~Wendy

P.S. “Okay Wendy - so that was interesting….“ If that’s what you find yourself saying as you listen, would you please share a little love with a 5 star review and a few words over on Apple Podcasts or Spotify? Thank you!

  • #45. When You’re Called to Serve High Conflict Families: How to Manage a Niche Practice with Jenni McBride McNamara

I’ve got a heck of an episode to share with you today…

But let’s start with a question.

What  would happen if you took on one of the toughest areas of practice there is, all by yourself, in your one person office?

What if you tried to ignore it, but the calling to serve these people was too strong, and you had to say yes to this work?

Can you even do that and make a living?

    Or have a life?

    Turns out, you can.

Working with high conflict families is not easy. But Jenni McBride McNamara is proving it can be done, and in a way that is profitable and meaningful  for her, while incredibly helpful for her clients.

    And the need is great.

We’re exploring the in’s & out’s of her niche practice in today’s episode - with some real gems at the end.

    In this episode, you’ll learn…

…how to show  clients you get them without having to share your own story

…how  to use a course to work with  courts, build community and make a bigger impact

…the challenge of boundaries and how not to take this home

…how learning to lead our selves is the hardest work of all

         …and what she’s re-thinking now.

    Give it a listen.

    ~Wendy

P.S. “Okay Wendy - this is super interesting…“ If that’s what you think as you listen to this episode, please share a little love with a 5 star review and a few words over on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. You will make my day!

  • #44. What is a Mastermind Anyway - And Do You *Really* Need One to Succeed?

Let’s talk about a dirty little secret in the private practice world that no one talks about.

Running a practice can be lonely.

Suddenly you’re the one with all the freedom, all the big ideas, AND all the responsibility. It can be both really exciting and really overwhelming at the same time.

And if your practice is full it is a lot to handle.

    Enter: the mastermind. ;)

Have you ever heard anyone say they were part of a mastermind? Or that they were looking for one to join?  Were you wondering what the heck they were talking about?

    Well let’s dive into that.

    • What is a mastermind group, exactly?
    • How do they work?
    • And do you really need one to be successful in private practice?

That’s what we’re talking about today.

    In this episode, you’ll learn…

…about the strategic AND energetic purpose of a mastermind.
…some of the typical structures a mastermind group could have.
…what makes a healthy mastermind group work
    and
…what can mess the whole thing up for everybody.

After hearing this, if you’re looking for a mastermind group of your own, you’ll know a LOT more about what to look for - and what to avoid.

    Give it a listen.

    ~Wendy

  • #43. What I Got Right as a Group Practice Owner, and a Few Things I Missed.

    Happy Valentines Day! ❤️

In today’s episode, I’m sharing a few things I’m proud of from my time as a group practice owner - and one or two, not so much.

I built a group counseling practice from the ground up, and there were a lot of things we (my colleagues and I) got right - even without a coach or business training of any kind.

It was a really special place, with the kind of professional support and personal connections we all dream of having at a workplace.

But, there were a few important things I missed too, and if I had it to do over again….

Well - we’re talking about all of that today. :)

This isn't the kind of thing I share that often, tbh. Hope it’s helpful….

    ~Wendy

  • #41. Ready or Not: 3 Ways Your Private Practice Will Force You to Grow.

You know, there is nothing quite like running a business to show us our ‘stuff’: our issues, our blindspots, and where we tend to hold ourselves back from the kind of success we all want.

So in this episode, let’s take a look at three core elements of business ownership that are especially  tricky for healers.

Let's talk about why they’re so hard, what they mean for your success, and why you have to find your way through each one to a better place.

(Pssst…..Which one do you relate to the most?)

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    1. Three core areas of private practice where healing arts professionals have the most trouble as business owners.
    2. The one aspect of practice ownership that NO one talks about, which is also the one we all need the most…
    3. Why learning to be comfortable with each area is a win/win/win for your clients, your practice - and for you.

Let’s get through all this - and grow.

    You got this.

  • #40. Introducing: The 7 Pillars of an Ideal Private Practice©

Want to know what it really takes to run a successful - and healthy - private practice?

Well - there’s more to it than renting an office, hanging up a sign, and making an announcement on Instagram.

And today, you’ll see how much more.

Although I often teach this to my coaching clients, this is the first time I’ve ever shared it publicly. In today’s episode, you’ll learn about my proprietary framework, the 7 Pillars of an Ideal Practice©.

Within this framework, we go beyond the start up phase and talk about what it takes to build a truly successful practice, one you’ll actually love.

We’re going deep and wide today, y’all. :)

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • what the 7 Pillars are, and how each one impacts your success.
    • why you may have to tend to marketing - among other things - even when you have a full practice, and…
    • the one Pillar that almost no one talks about, but in truth is probably the most important of all.

Shoot me a DM and tell me which Pillar in your practice could use some attention…

    To your success!

  • #39. Why Closing Her Group Practice was One of the Best Things She Ever Did: An Interview with Ali Boehm

Ali Boehm has learned a lot about what makes her happy since starting out as a solo massage therapist.

First, she grew a successful group of 15 outstanding providers with retail, classes, staff training and more.  That itself came with it’s share of challenges, and wins - all of them important.

But then, when the time was right, she walked away from it all, opening the door to an even better business and a happier life - a decision that took tremendous courage.

In this interview, we explored what it really means to build a business that fits your life, even when your life changes.

    Listen, and you’ll learn…

    • How to stand out creatively in a well established field, with many ways to bring in revenue.
    • Why she started hiring for attitude, and how she developed her staff internally.
    • Why not all clients are created equal and what that means for your practice.
    • The importance of boundaries…and the many and varied ways this plays out in a business.
    • How sometimes the toughest times can lead to an even better business.

Such a great conversation we had!
    Enjoy!
