Would you like to hear some of the secrets behind a thriving private practice? That’s what you’ll get in today’s episode.
When I started my private practice, I had a strong, clear and powerful vision for what I wanted to build. That, I now know, was a key driver in my success. I’ll tell you more about what that vision was and how it guided every decision I made. (This is so important.)
But we won’t stop there. I’ll also revel several other core strategies that I know contributed to the success of my practice.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
1. How I built a brand totally by accident. 😜
2. About one strategy that I really had to push my little introvert heart to use - and how it paid off.
3. The most powerful action of all that I know helped us earn our place as a respected community resource.
And there’s lots more.
Every one of these helped me get my business off the ground even when it was just me, AND as I built a successful group practice with more business than we could manage.
Which one of these stands out for you? Which one of these are you using, or plan to START using, in your practice?
Shoot me a DM or an email and let me know.
And enjoy!
~Wendy

Whooo boy.
Sometimes, it’s a miracle this business of mine ever worked…. but it did, in SPITE of what I’m going to share with you today, lol.
When I started my practice, I had to figure out everything on my own. With no such thing as coaches, masterminds, online courses, or even a business class in grad school, no one taught me how to run a business.
Looking back, I can see at least 7 big mistakes I made, and not surprisingly - they were ALL about how I handled the money.
Sharing those with you today.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
…most of all, why understanding how to handle the money side of things is vital to the success of your practice.
My hope is that by sharing my experiences and a few hard-learned lessons, you can avoid some of the pitfalls that I fell into.

What a story - and what an incredible conversation.
In this episode, you get to meet Maira Holzmann, LCSW - a somatically trained therapist, group practice owner, and business coach out of Denver, Colorado. And I promise you, by the end of our conversation, you will adore her!
Although today she's playing big - it wasn't always that way.
In fact, she'll tell you that she 'failed" private practice 3 times before she finally began to figure things out.
But she is a remarkably resilient person, who knows her strengths, and knows when she needs help. That energetic combination has led her through some tough times into a MUCH better place. And from her experiences, she now has a lot to share with the rest of us.
Through her story, she challenges all of us to believe in ourselves and to dream bigger - in a soulful, meaningful way.
Give this a listen. You'll be soooo glad you did.

Today, y’all, we’re talking about the guys. :)
I met Shawn Helvey when he reached out to me in advance of a move to our area. In true proactive form, he was trying to get the lay of the land so he could understand the mental health culture in our area.
I liked him immediately.
So of course, it was only a matter of time before I invited him to join me on the podcast.
Shawn Helvey is a licensed psychotherapist and the founder of Man Made Mentors, a group practice focused on helping young men and their families.
In this fascinating episode, we explored his unique approach to therapy, the importance of specializing, and how his life experiences have shaped his work. (There were some great stories there!)
We also tackled the topic of male emotional vulnerability, and the work he does to help men become emotionally available and strong.
Shawn is passionate about mentoring his clients, and his staff. He strikes me as kind, emotionally strong, and refreshingly direct. I can see why his practice stays full. :)
I hope you enjoy this incredible conversation on the integration of strength and vulnerability in psychotherapy, and how Sean Helvey's innovative approach is making a positive impact on the lives of men and their families.
Give it a listen.
~Wendy

Almost everything will work if you unplug it for a few minutes…including you.
- Anne Lamott
What do you call a “real vacation”? And when was the last time you had one?
If it’s really a long weekend, then you and I need to talk.
If you can’t remember the last time you took a full week off, or more, then you and I (really!) need to talk. :)
The ugly truth is that way too many healers in private practice feel like they just can’t be away from their clients more than a few days at time. And I get that!
Yet I’ve managed to be away for as much as FIVE weeks at a time, without hurting my practice - at all.
Taking time off is essential for our mental and physical health, right? So let’s figure out how to make that happen.
In this episode, I'll walk you through several of the key steps you’ll need in order to prepare financially, clinically, and strategically for your oh-so-well-deserved break.
PLUS, I'll share some tips on setting boundaries with clients, providing emergency coverage, and managing the financial aspects of taking time off.
I’ll also share a quick journal exercise at the end to will help you start planning your own getaway.
Remember, your business is there to support your life, not the other way around.
It's time to make self-care and time away from work a TRUE priority - for the success of your practice, and your own well-being.
You know I’m right. :)

This was SO much fun!
In this episode I had such a fun interview with Kym Tolson, AKA “The Traveling Therapist”. You may recognize her, since she was on Ideal Practice back in Episode 30, talking about everything related to managing your own billing. In fact, she’s the first person I’ve ever invited back for a second visit.
Because this is the conversation I really wanted to have. :)
Dreaming of a life on the road? Wondering if you can keep a practice going and travel at the same time?
This is the episode for you.
Kym has been on the road full time since February of 2022, still running her business full throttle all the way. So she’s learned a LOT about what it takes to keep a practice going as a ‘digital nomad’.
Today, she’s sharing some of her favorite tips with you, like:
Oh - and wait til you hear what she uses to get around in as she moves from the east coast to the west and back again…It’s not a camper van, lol.
With a lively sense of humor, Kym sees the impossible as possible, y’all.
Listen, and you’ll see it too.
~Wendy

P.S. If you enjoyed this conversation, could you leave a 5 star review and a few words over on Apple Podcasts? Your reviews are critically important and help us get the podcast in front of more people.
So thank you!
On the other hand, if you didn’t enjoy it so much - don’t worry about it. But thanks anyway :)

TODAY’S GUEST: KYM TOLSON, LCSW
Kym, a therapist who is licensed in Virginia, has an online insurance-based therapy practice, and travels full time as a digital nomad. After learning the hard way that she needed to pay closer attention to the billing side of her practice, she dove in to learn all she could about insurance billing herself. We talked about that back in Episode 30.
Today, she’s also known as the Traveling Therapist, with a podcast and a Facebook group by the same name. She’s also launched a course where you can learn how to do this yourself!
