  • Ep 383: UK Budget and high-stakes US Election

Last week, Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered Labour’s first budget in 14 years. Amid the headlines, the biggest takeaway for gambling was the lack of news, as Reeves chose not to take the advice of financial think tanks and hike gambling taxes.

And this will be today’s topic on iGaming Daily, supported by Optimove. Martyn Elliott, SBC’s Project Director, is joined by Ted Menmuir, SBC’s Content Director, and the Editor of Payment Expert, Ted Orme-Claye to delve deeper into the details of the UK budget.

The trio discuss the gambling industry’s reaction to the budget, the potential streamlining of remote gambling taxes and why the UK industry needs to focus on the rest of the Gambling Act review adoption alongside the new Labour government.

Later on in the episode, the show’s attention shifts across the Atlantic where Americans are preparing to head to the ballot boxes and vote for either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris in tomorrow’s (5 November) US election. Although Americans are unable to bet on who their next leader will be, elsewhere in the world there has been plenty of action on betting exchanges and many have Trump as favourite, despite polls showing the race to be a dead heat or slightly in favour of Harris.

A sector that will be eagerly awaiting the results of the election is the Crypto industry and to end the episode the trio consider what a victory for either side could mean for the sector, as Trump has been a vocal supporter of crypto whereas Harris is expected to continue on a similar path to the one taken by the current Biden administration.

One of the key themes throughout the conference has been responsible advertising and the trio discuss some of the conversations regarding how operators in Brazil can protect vulnerable and underage players through responsible publicity, as well as the importance of choosing the correct influencers and brand ambassadors.

Later on in the episode, the focus shifts to Guanajuato in Mexico where a legislator presented a proposal to set specific taxes on the expenditure and prizes received by people who participate in bets, contests and raffles.

  • Ep 381: Brazil dominates discussion as SBC Summit Latinoamerica kicks off

iGaming Daily, supported by Optimove, once again comes live from the conference floor at SBC Summit Latinoamerica. Fernando Noodt, Senior Journalist for SBC Noticias, is joined by Ricardo Assis, Editor of SBC Noticias Brasil, and Ana Maria Menezes, Business Journalist for SBC Noticias Brazil.

Ricardo and Ana are both new to the industry so the pair recount how they have found their first day at the summit, as well as discuss who they have spoken to and what they have learnt so far. Both note that a talking point throughout day one was the potential issues regarding KYC in Brazil, ahead of the country’s regulated online gaming market opening in the new year.

Later on in the episode, the trio also talk about the ongoing battle between the Attorney General’s office (PGR) and the Rio de Janeiro State Lottery (Loterj). Last week, PGR reinforced the request to prohibit the operation of online bookmakers authorized by Loterj throughout the national territory, citing that the relaxation of territorial limitations could generate a federative imbalance.

  • Ep 378: France to bring online casino into play…or so we thought

On the latest episode of iGaming Daily, supported by Optimove, Ted Menmuir, SBC’s Content Director is joined by Jake Pollard to discuss an amendment in France that would have regulated the country’s online casino market.

However, since recording the episode, news broke over the weekend that the French government has withdrawn the budget amendment. The decision was announced by Budget Minister Laurent Saint-Martin, who stated that further consultations were needed to avoid the negative impacts and job losses warned by regional stakeholders.

Though postponed, the government retains the mandate to review online casino laws, with potential future measures focusing on tax generation, land-based protections, and harm reduction and despite the setback, Ted and Jake’s discussion still remains relevant as they consider the potential impact of regulating the online casino market in France.

The duo talk about why France has upheld a fragmented market to date, why land-based casinos are unhappy at the prospect of an online casino market and the prospect of high taxes on the sector if it does become regulated by the government.

Betsson AB has reported its eleventh consecutive quarter of growth, with the group’s leadership citing that Betsson’s brands are now outperforming the growth of markets and competitive metrics.

Today on iGaming Daily, supported by Optimove, Ted Menmuir, SBC’s Content Director, is joined by Pontus Lindwall, CEO of Betsson AB, to reflect on this period of success for the company.

The pair discuss how Betsson’s “well-oiled machine” is helping to fuel this continued momentum, Betsson’s recent strategic acquisition of Sporting Solutions and why the firm is focusing on Italy, particularly through its sponsorship of Serie A side Inter Milan.

Lindwall also talks about the timely introduction of online casino regulation in France, Betsson’s early bet on Latin America and potential regulatory updates in Croatia and Georgia.

Last week, FanDuel reached a long-term commercial partnership with Diamond Sports for the exclusive right to name the media company’s regional sports networks (RSNs). As part of the deal, FanDuel has naming rights to Diamond’s portfolio of 16 RSNs that provide access to new markets nationwide.

And on the latest episode of iGaming Daily supported by Optimove, Jessica Welman, Editor of SBC Americas, is joined by Charlie Horner, SBC’s Media Manager, to delve deeper into the deal.

They discuss what the deal entails, where it went wrong for Bally Sports previously and why FanDuel believes that they can capitalise where Bally’s couldn’t, as well as what the success of this project would look like for FanDuel.

After the break, the due move on to take a look at the affiliate space where XLMedia has exited the game, selling its North American domains to Sportradar in a deal that could be worth up to $30m. They talk about what Sportradar is getting from the deal, why XLMedia is throwing in the towel and what value suppliers are getting in the affiliate business.

Elsewhere, Catena Media announced the layoffs of 29 employees and Jess and Charlie consider whether this could be a canary in the coal mine for North American affiliates.

  • Ep 375: Reaction to Lula’s warning and Ecuador’s advertising ban lifted

It’s all about Latin America for the latest episode of iGaming Daily, supported by Optimove. Fernando Noodt, Senior Journalist for SBC Noticias, is joined by Lucía Gando, Editor of SBC Noticias, and Isadora Marcante, SBC's Relationship Manager for Brazil, to look at the latest news coming from the region.

The show starts in Brazil where the senate is set to vote on the return of legalised land-based casinos, a sector that has been banned since 1946. The trio discuss the potential financial impact of the change and why the online sector is supportive of the return of the land-based casinos.

Staying in Brazil, they then move on to talk about the reaction to President Lula’s comments by the industry. As covered previously on the show, Lula warned that he may end online betting and gaming in the country if the new regulations do not achieve the results expected by the government.

Attention then turns to the “blooming” market in Ecuador where the government has again authorised advertising of the gambling and betting sector throughout the country via Executive Decree 421. Fernando, Lu and Isa discuss how this could help develop the gambling market in Ecuador.
