There are countless misconceptions surrounding the refugee crisis, and migration from the Global South to North. We discuss the reasons why people decide to leave their home country, their journey to Europe with associated risks, the militarisation of European borders and the effects of detention centres on mental health. We also explore how public perception and attitudes towards refugees can be improved.
