Axel worked for the library for 33 years, helping to build the food and wine library into the greatest of its type, before retiring in 2020, though he still volunteers his time and knowledge to the food and wine community. IWP Ep45 Maryam Hariri - Azizam Wines I was able to speak with Maryam Hariri in San Francisco during her tour releasing the Azizam wines.  Maryam was a climate change policy maker before being a climate adaptive winemaker and we talk about both lives.  She also works with Bichi wines, both based in Baja California.  Working mostly with small vineyards and old vines. Palomino, Mission, Rosa Del Peru and Nebbiolo make up much of the production often fermented and aged in concrete Tinajas aka Amphora. Historical Episode IWP Ep44 Kate Field - Eccentric In Her Genius. Today we’ll be talking about Kate Field.  She was an author, playwright, actress and more.  Her involvement in the wine industry was brief but she’s worth knowing about, wine connection or not. She helped in the fight to hold off prohibition.  Prohibition wasn’t an overnight change, it was threatened for years and decades even.  Counties and cities going dry, Saloon taxes enacted, bars shuttered, taxation laws around wines changed and when prohibition finally did happen, over 40 years or so had gone by.  It was the Wets vs the Drys.

IWP Ep43 William Allen and Karen Daenen - Two Shepherds I recently sat down with William Allen and Karen Daenen of Two Shepherds Wine at their home and vineyard in Fulton. Historical Episode IWP Ep42 Christopher Buckley - Ravenswood, The Blind Boss of San Francisco and Lord of Livermore. Today we are looking at Christopher Buckley and his historic Ravenswood estate.  Buckley was a blind Political boss in San Francisco during the latter part of the 19th century.  Ravenswood was his 100 plus acre country estate in the upcoming wine producing region of the Livermore Valley. There have been books and articles written about Buckley but they all tend to gloss over the vineyard and wine producing side, giving just the basic information or sometimes mis information or conflicting stories.  I’ve tried to piece it all together here from the original sources when possible to give an accurate depiction of his estate, vineyard and winemaking.

Historical Episode IWP Ep40 The 2 Natoma Vineyards with Kevin Knauss - The American River, Bugbey and Gold.  Today we're discussing the 2 Natoma vineyards, they were close to each other in both time and distance, enough so that they have fooled wine historians much smarter than myself.  They fooled me too.  I have Kevin Knauss helping me today, he was the one to set me straight, he’s spent years as a historian studying the American River and Sacramento area and has written about Bugbey and his Natoma vineyard, AP Catlin, Folsom Lake, the American River and more.  Our story today starts in the time and place of the California Gold Rush and concludes with it too.  Although neither vineyard is well known today, they both had their time in the sun.  They were run by real men of the age, with all that entails. We’ll hear about the first raisins made in California, one of the largest vineyards in the state, huge infrastructure projects and the demise of both vineyards in the worst ways. We also get a return of Hilgard and the University Experiment Stations, finding what grapes will grow best in California. If you want to learn more about those, check out episodes 24 and 26 after. We’ll talk about Benjamin Bugbey first, Kevin gives great descriptions about what people in general and winemakers or vineyardists were going through at the time, trying to find their way in this new land.  Kevin also provides much useful information on the ways farmers at the time would learn of new technologies and techniques and how the sharing of information happened. I imagine in this way Bugbey could serve as a stand in for many of the very early California vineyardists and winemakers. IWP Ep38 Thomas DeBiase - Jupiter Wine Co. Today I’m speaking with Thomas DeBiase of Jupiter Wine Company.  We sat down on rainy day at the beautiful Idlewild tasting room in Healdsburg.  Thomas and his business partner Michael Richardson started Jupiter in 2020 to not only produce low intervention wines but to give back to the community.  They work with a fun variety of Italian varieties including Vermentino, Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Tocai Fruilano, give the wines a try. We discuss the start of the winery, drink through and learn more about their vineyard sources, farming and inspiration and a bit about the Las Vegas Tiki Bar scene. Jupiter is a relatively new winery but making great wines while also trying to give something back.  I especially love the Tocai Fruilano and the Montepulciano.
