  • Before You Leave a Toxic Relationship...
Before you leave or end a toxic or dramatic relationship, you must be willing to look at the part you’re playing.
You must know the benefits you get from playing the role of Victim, Rescuer, or Persecutor AND be able to identify what those roles are costing you.
If we don’t clean up the benefits we’re getting BEFORE we leave, we will recreate those benefits in yet another toxic, dramatic relationship.
You don’t have to decide to leave or know how to leave on your own.

I can help you, my friend.

  • Be a CHALLENGER - not a Persecutor!
If you are in the habit of “playing the Rescuer” in your relationships, it is possible for you to shift into the role of “empowered Coach” IF and WHEN you are willing to stop JUDGING and CRITICIZING others for their:

    thoughts and beliefs
    emotions
    actions
    current results

I invite you to consider these questions. Are you in the habit of:

challenging others from a place of love or discernment OR are you attacking, blaming, and criticizing others from a place of judgment,  hate, or disdain?
    feeling superior to others?
offering honest observations for the consideration of others?
    maintaining your own clear boundaries?
    being clear about your expectations?
allowing others to solve their problems their way?

  • Be a COACH - Not a Rescuer!
If you are in the habit of “playing the Rescuer” in your relationships, it is possible for you to shift into the role of “empowered Coach” IF and WHEN you are willing to ALLOW OTHERS to take 100% responsibility for what they’re:

    thinking and believing
    feeling
    doing or not doing
    creating as results

I invite you to consider these questions. Are you willing to:

listen without trying to solve problems?
    help without expecting reciprocation?
    empower others rather than disabling?
    encourage agency over dependency?
create and communicate your own boundaries?
ask questions rather than provide answers?
allow others to struggle and make mistakes without judging them?

“Victims depend on a savior (rescuer), rescuers yearn for a basket case, and persecutors need a scapegoat… each role in the drama triangle has its own payoffs. Victims get to be taken care of. Rescuers get to feel good by caretaking. Persecutors get to remain feeling superior… but the cost is… to miss out on… healthy, resonant, resilient relationships… “

  • Enmeshed in Toxicity
In a healthy relationship, independence is encouraged, celebrated, and respected. In an “enmeshed” relationship, a person is expected to think, feel, and act according to spoken or unspoken rules and expectations.

Here are 5 SIGNS that you may be in an enmeshed relationship:

Murky Emotions: your feelings are entangled with your partner’s.
Ask yourself: “Are these my emotions - or theirs?”
    Individuality is Criminal:
Ask yourself: “Am I allowed to be and value who and what I value?”
    Role to Play:
Ask yourself: “Do I have to conform to keep the peace - or, am I walking on eggshells?”
    Outsourced Emotions:
Ask yourself: “Do my self-esteem and confidence depend on the quality of the relationship? Am I blamed for their emotions?”
    All on You:
Ask yourself: “Is it all on me to make things better or to fix things?”

Based on “Signs That You May Be in an Enmeshed Relationship” by Joe Paul.
