  • Why You Won’t Leave Toxic Relationships: Part 1
There are THREE categories of relationships that feel impossible to leave EVEN IF the relationship is toxic.

You have a HISTORY with that person:

known them for a long time
    childhood friends
    high school or college friends
    related to them
    worked with them

You are in close PROXIMITY to the person:

    neighbor
    friend of a friend
a family member or friend’s significant other
    co-worker or colleague

You share a CONTEXT or SPACE or ARENA with that person:

    same friend group
    same school
    same organization
    same activity
    same community
    Parents of your kids’ friends

    Ask yourself this question:

“If I Met Them TODAY, would I choose to be in a relationship with them?”

    Did your body feel:

    open, expansive and light?
    closed, constricted and heavy?

  • Do You Have Any of These Toxic Behaviors?
People are NOT toxic - but behaviors and relationships can be.

I describe behaviors and relationships as TOXIC if:

    they are harmful
they are mentally, physically or emotionally unhealthy

Here are 7 types of toxic behaviors in relationships. When do you notice that you or someone else plays the part of a:

“Conversational Narcissist” or a “Chatty Cathy” who hogs the conversations and steals all of the “air time”What benefit do you get from talking non-stop instead of being interested in others?
    What does it cost you?
“Straightjacket” who tries to control and may offer backhanded complimentsWhat benefit do you get from controlling others or thinking they should be just like you?
    What does it cost you?
“Emotional Moocher” or “Debbie Downer” or “Emotional Vampire”What benefit do you get from dumping your problems and emotions on others?
    What does it cost you?
“Drama Magnet”What benefit do you get from jumping from one crisis to another or from always blaming something or someone for your misery?
“J.J.” - “Jealous and Judgmental”What benefit do you get from being jealous of and judgmental toward others?
    What is it costing you?
“Tank” or “Know-It-All” or “Bossy Bully”What benefit do you get from forcing and pressuring others to do things “your way”?
    What is it costing you?

  • Toxic People Don’t Exist...
People are NOT toxic - but behaviors and relationships can be.

Chemicals and Poisons are toxic if you:

    are exposed to them
    ingest them

We may unconsciously be exposed to toxic behaviors or be in toxic relationships. Awareness will allow you to decide what you will or will not tolerate.

I describe behaviors and relationships as TOXIC if:

    they are harmful
they are mentally, physically or emotionally unhealthy

I invite you to consider these questions:

When you describe someone as “toxic”, what are they saying or doing?
When you think the thought “he/she is toxic”, what do you feel:

    dread?
    drained or exhausted?
    obligated?
    angry?
    resentful or bitter?
    frustrated?
    sad or disappointed?
    afraid or nervous?

When you were feeling these emotions, did you:

    blame them?
    criticize or persecute them?
look for someone to rescue you from them?

  • How I Help Clients Delegate
I help my clients delegate in their professional and personal lives. Here are a few “delegation” questions for your consideration:

Is this a task at work or home that only I can do?
Why is this task a priority?
What about this task classifies it as something only I can do?
How often will I complete this task?
Which staff member/family member could do this instead?
What do they need in order to do it well?
Is there someone I might consider hiring to do this?
What skill sets/talents are required to do this task?

I also help my clients STOP delegating decision-making to their brains, and start making decisions in their bodies.

When we delegate responsibility for our emotions to others, we play the role of Victim in our professional and personal relationships. I empower clients to feel their emotions, learn from them, and create positive emotions on purpose.

  • Stop Delegating Decision-Making to Your Brain
    Our brains are hard-wired for:

    Defining and explaining knowledge
Understanding and comprehending information by comparing, contrasting, interpreting, and classifying
    Applying knowledge by problem-solving
Analyzing, categorizing, correlating, and making conclusions
    Evaluating, criticizing, reframing, and prioritizing
    Creating, designing, developing and inventing

Our bodies are designed for decision-making.

I can help you learn how to make decisions in your body that are aligned with who you really are.

  • Don’t DELEGATE Your Feelings!
If you are BLAMING someone else for how you’re feeling, you are in the habit of delegating the responsibility for your emotions to them.

Dr. Stephen Karpman’s “The Drama Triangle” is a model that explains the unconscious, unintentional roles we play in our relationships:

A person “playing the role of VICTIM” is in the habit of BLAMING others for how they feel and is searching for a savior.
A person “playing the role of  RESCUER” is in the habit of “swooping in to save the day” and takes on the emotions of the VICTIM in order to feel needed and useful.
A person “playing the role of PERSECUTOR” is in the habit of ATTACKING or CRITICIZING the VICTIM and the RESCUER and is searching for a scapegoat.

Other people are not responsible for how you are feeling or for making you feel better.
When someone else says or does something that you didn’t want or expect, your brain will make their words or actions MEAN SOMETHING.
This MEANING or THOUGHT will create a vibration in your body.
    That VIBRATION is a FEELING.
What you are feeling will FUEL what you do or don’t do.

If you need some help delegating your emotions ONLY to you, I can help.
You deserve to feel ALL of your emotions - they are not good or bad - they are simply opportunities for you to learn and gain awareness.

  • The DRAMA of Delegating
When we delegate, we ask or request that another person take over a task, job, or responsibility. Asking or requesting is not a problem - what does become problematic is assuming what the other person will think or feel about us when we make the request or ask for help.

Brooke Castillo, Master Life Coach and founder of The Life Coach School teaches a concept called “Math vs. Drama”:

    The MATH = the FACTS:

The job, task, or responsibility you are requesting that another person will do.

The DRAMA = THOUGHTS about the facts.

The DRAMA is what we assume the other person will THINK or FEEL about our request or about us.

A type of delegation is creating and communicating a BOUNDARY.

    A BOUNDARY = a request + response.

A REQUEST is what you’d like the other person to do or not do.
A RESPONSE is what you will do regardless of the other person being willing or able to meet your request.

  • ”No One Else Can Do It Right!”
In “How To Delegate Effectively: 9 Tips for Managers,” by Lauren Landry of the Harvard Business School, there are 6 main reasons why people won’t delegate.

The sixth reason we refuse to delegate is believing that we’re the only who can do it RIGHT.

I invite you to consider these questions:

Is it really true that I’m the only one or that there's only one way?
Is it really true that there’s a RIGHT or WRONG way to do this?
Does it serve me to use the word RIGHT?
Am I aiming for excellence or for perfection?
What benefit do I get from assuming that I’m the only one who can do it right, well, or perfectly?Do you feel superior to others?
Do you feel better than others?
Do  you get to escape comparison-itis and compete with others instead?
What is costing you to believe that you’re the only one who can do it right, well, or perfectly?Does it keep you stuck in over-reliance on self?

In “How To Delegate Effectively: 9 Tips for Managers,” by Lauren Landry of the Harvard Business School, there are 6 main reasons why people won’t delegate.

The fifth reason we refuse to delegate is a lack of CONFIDENCE or TRUST in the other person.

I invite you to consider these questions:

Do you have evidence that you can place your CONFIDENCE in another person?
When have you felt disappointed by someone you trusted?
Do you have a story or limiting belief that “You can’t TRUST others”?
Does it feel SAFE to put your trust in others?
Do you have self-confidence regarding your ability to put your CONFIDENCE in the right person?

In “How To Delegate Effectively: 9 Tips for Managers,” by Lauren Landry of the Harvard Business School, there are 6 main reasons why people won’t delegate.

The fourth reason is FEELING GUILTY about adding more work onto another person’s plate or to-do list.

I invite you to consider these questions:

When you delegate, are you doing something out of integrity according only to you? If not, are you feeling DISCOMFORT rather than GUILT?
