Sulman Aziz Mirza, MD is so very excited to present the first of hopefully many interviews and discussions to come. The first is with author Bree Barton, who has recently written the middle grade aged best-selling book, "Zia Erases the World", about a middle school girl dealing with depression. We had a wonderful conversation about various topics, including coping with childhood struggles by writing a book by 10 years old, dealing with misinformation on the Internet, bringing humor into our lives, and the controversies surrounding banning books.
Chapters 0:00 Introduction to Bree Barton! 1:04 Bree joins 2:04 Bree's origin story and discussing children's mental health 11:13 Life coaches and the mental health provider shortage 22:42 Role of humor in life, mental health, and writing 30:16 National controversies on banning LGBTQ+ books in schools 40:58 Book tour and student/parent interactions 51:19 Wrap-up
From Bree: "Bree Barton is an author, speaker, dancer, podcaster, mental health advocate, and she-wolf. She wrote her first book as “a humble child of ten”—her exact words in the query letter she sent to editors. Those editors told her to keep writing, and luckily, she did. A handful of years later, Bree is the author of ZIA ERASES THE WORLD, her bestselling middle grade debut. She teaches dance and writing, often at the same time—like at Rock 'n' Write, the free empowering movement workshop she created for girls and young womxn. Bree's books have been published in nine countries and six languages, five of which she does not speak."
