Sexual violence against women is not committed by individual ‘monsters’, but is an expression of a patriarchal system that orders our whole society, says the American author Jackson Katz. Sexual violence is therefore primarily about power. In De Balie, Katz dissects the dynamics at work.
Far right politicians in Europe and the United States are trying to assert male authority. The release of the Epstein files showed how interlinked power, money and sexual abuse already were. Sexual violence is not a abbrevation, but intergral part of our society.
With Katz, we’ll explore how this works at both the micro level of family and intimate relationships and the macro level of institutions, politics, and power. We’ll examine the position men (and male leaders) occupy in all this, as well as the possibility they have to change things for the better.
Dr. Jackson Katz is an American educator, speaker, and author known for his work on gender, race, and violence. He co-founded the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program, implemented in U.S. sports, the military, and schools. His latest book is Every Man: Why Violence Against Women is a Men’s Issue.
