This is the Practical Homeopathy® Podcast, episode number 129, with Joette Calabrese.
Joette:
Hi, I’m Joette Calabrese, and I welcome you to our health care movement — yours, mine and the countless men and women across the globe who have re-taken control of their families’ health with Practical Homeopathy®.
So, for the next few minutes, let’s link our arms as I demystify homeopathy — what was once considered an esoteric paradigm — into an understandable, reproducible, safe and effective health care solution available to all.
This is the medicine you’ve been searching for — my unique brand of homeopathy, PRACTICAL Homeopathy®.
Kate: (01:00)
Hi, I am Kate, and I want to welcome you to the podcast today. We’re so glad you’re here. I want to thank you for taking the initiative to learn about homeopathy, which will have a big impact on your life.
And if you are new here, we want to welcome you.
Today’s podcast: Joette is going to share some tips on how to overcome anxiety and panic attacks. So, let’s get started.
Hi, Joette!
Joette:
Hi, Kate.
Kate:
It’s so exciting. This is a huge topic because I know anxiety can be so debilitating. So, I’d love to hear your thoughts on how to address this homeopathically. It’s really the only way that I know of that can really calm down anxiety and panic attacks. What are your thoughts?
Joette: (01:44)
Well, there are psychotropic drugs that someone could use, and that can calm down a certain amount of anxiety, but then you pay for it in another way.
There’s no such thing as a synthetic drug of commerce that is as simple as, “Oh, just take it and you’ll be just fine.”
No, there’s always a downside, and the downside can be pretty sobering. We don’t want to get into a situation where someone depends on a synthetic drug.
So, one of the ways that we can look at this — or actually the main way to look at this — is that, with homeopathy, the homeopathic medicines correct the problem. They don’t just cover it up for the next opportunity that the panic or the anxiety attack presents again.
Whereas, with conventional drugs, you are assigned to those drugs for months, years, decades.
In homeopathy, after using the homeopathic medicine — sometimes only a couple of doses, sometimes only a couple of doses here and there over a period of weeks or months — it’s over.
Joette: (02:52)
Now, what do I mean by “over”? It means there are no more panic attacks. They simply don’t occur. And it’s not because it’s been suppressed or stuffed down into the person only to come up (like pressing down on a water balloon) so that it bulges up somewhere else.
No, it uproots the condition. It stops it. It ends it so that then it becomes a mere memory — even a dim memory in your thinking — so that you can get on with your life.
So, I talk about this all the time — a problem with anxiety or panic attacks, either one. I mean, we’re going to be talking about both today. But I talk about them in my blogs, which you really ought to take advantage of. They’re free. You can access them on a regular basis anytime you’d like.
In my courses, we have a course called Mindful Homeopathy in which I go into greater depth of exactly how to utilize these medicines. Although, I’m going to give you good information today, even without perhaps taking an entire course.
Because here’s the thing: When someone has anxiety, it is such a huge roadblock that it seems as though nothing else can be taken care of in that day. Nothing else matters. It doesn’t matter that you have to tend to the children. It almost doesn’t matter that you’re supposed to be sleeping. It almost doesn’t matter that you’re supposed to be having fun with your family. It takes such precedent over your life that it colors everything. It’s as though you’re putting on a pair of glasses that give you a completely different perspective. But that’s the downside of life.
The upside is we have homeopathy, and homeopathy is the only medicine that I’m aware of that has the ability to resolve this.
Joette: (04:57)
So, let’s start with one medicine that I’ve talked about so many times because it was such an influence in my life and in many others’ lives. And it’s so ubiquitous. It’s a common medicine that is used in so many people’s lives … that’s what I mean to say. And that medicine is Aconitum napellus. The short version is Aconite, but it’s Aconitum napellus.
Now, here’s the thing. I don’t leave home without it. I keep it in my little makeup bag in my purse at all times. I would never leave home without it. Why? Not because I get panic attacks. I used to, many years ago, until I started to use this medicine (and another one we’re going to be talking about). Those years, those times are over for me. I can live a very comfortable life because I don’t have to worry about anxiety or panic or over-worry, et cetera.
So, I keep it in my purse because the thing — and this is what I want to make clear to you today — the thing about Aconitum is that it’s often one minute, you’re fine, and the next minute, it’s BAM, and you’re hit with this terrible panic or this terrible anxiety.
And the reason I keep it in my purse is because if I’m in an automobile accident or someone else is in some kind of an accident, one minute, everything is just fine. You’re just running through life, and then, all of a sudden, BAM, you’re hit with something. It could be an automobile accident. It could be falling off of a bicycle.
It could even be — it doesn’t have to be — an injury. It could be you’re feeling just fine and all of a sudden, BAM, it feels like you’re coming down with something. “Oh, my gosh, my chest feels very full. Two minutes ago, I didn’t even notice this. Now, it’s all of a sudden.” So, it’s a quick onset, a fast onset of a sense of impending doom: that sense of, “Oh my gosh, something really bad has just happened.”
Sometimes it’s because something bad really did happen, but many other times, we can’t even put our finger on it. “Why do I feel like this? It’s only a cold.” Or “Why do I feel like that? I don’t even have a cold. There’s nothing going on except that I feel this sense of impending doom, this panic like I’m really in serious trouble here.”
And years ago, when I was poking through materia medicas, which is, of course, the material of our medicines, which is an anthology of our homeopathic medicines and a description of them. (We have many materia medicas authored by many great homeopaths.) I came across this sentence that really struck me.
In fact, it struck me so strongly that I wrote down the date that it really hit me. Because someone I know — as well as myself — had suffered a shock earlier in life and found that ever since that time, it’s as though it was stuck.
And so, this is what I wrote. Actually, I wrote, “Joette discovered this particular line, August 14th, 1996.”
It took me a few years to actually embody this idea. And this is what this sentence read (and I’m reading from “The Desktop Guide” by Roger Morrison). This author has a way of putting things eloquently. He says, “Aconite can release a shock or fright that has been held in the body or mind for a lifetime.”
That’s a powerful statement, my friends.
If the person has had panic attacks for the last 15 years of their life, for example, or anxiety —even low-level, background music (“Musak” as I used to call it when I used to have it years ago) — ever since a specific event.
They were caught in an earthquake. They got stuck in an elevator for several hours. Somebody attacked them and they were fearful of their life. They had a very frightening experience during birth.
Aconitum can uproot that.
So, we’re not going to just guess that that’s what happened. But if we could say, “Oh my gosh, yes, there was a significant event in my life 15 years ago. And just around that time, it seems as though I’ve had this anxiety for no apparent reason … or for an apparent reason.”
And so, what do we do with that?
Okay, Aconite fits the picture. Now, what do we do? Well, we use the remedy Aconite napellus. I prefer 200C, although a 30 could be used — 30C could be used, 30X could be used, 200X. But my preference, because it’s so readily available in today’s world, is Aconitum napellus 200C.
And during an event of panic or even just simple low-level anxiety, the person takes a dose.
Now, some people may say, “What do you mean during an event? I have this all the time!”
Okay, then you just take it. It’s often best used before bed. Doesn’t have to be. What if it’s a true anxiety attack at noon? Does that mean we have to wait to take it before bed? No, we take it as needed.
We take a dose, and then, we check out how do we feel even two hours later, 12 hours later, 24 hours later. And we kind of test how do we feel. “Oh, my goodness. You know what? I kind of forgot about it.”
Now, sometimes one dose will do it. I know. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? But perhaps, instead, it might need to be used once a day, every day for a few days.
We’re always looking to back off of the medicine because this is not something that I want you to get hooked on.
Kate:
And it’s not a supplement.
Joette:
It’s not a supplement or a vitamin. This is a medicine that is intended to uproot the condition. And over a period of time — it could be just one dose, could be three doses over a period of three days, could be five doses over a period of five days — you should find that you’ve just forgotten about being anxious. It just doesn’t show up.
A lot of times people don’t even realize. Life just goes on, and they don’t think about it any longer. That’s the way this medicine can act.
Kate:
So, if someone was having a panic attack and they took a dose of Aconitum and then it subsided and things felt a little better. And then, in another 30 minutes or an hour, all of a sudden, they started feeling that panic coming back on … could they take another dose of the Aconite?
Joette:
Yes, they could. I would not encourage taking it much more frequently than, say, once every hour or so. But if it doesn’t act in a dose or two or three doses, then over a period of a few hours, it’s likely not the correct medicine. And I’ll tell you what I mean by that in a little while.
Before I go into that — choosing a second-choice medicine — I want you to also think about this as a medicine that is really great when someone has a fear, an extreme anxiety before surgery or after surgery. Because surgery is a shock to the system and the person intuitively knows that they’re about to go through something that’s like a world war on their body.
Surgery is a big deal. People take it very nonchalantly these days, but I disagree. I think they should not be thinking of it that way.
If one is absolutely in need of surgery, then it can be a wonderful thing. Surgery can be very useful in the hands of a good surgeon. However, surgery is often overused. A tonsillectomy — I could keep going — all kinds of skin conditions that are surgically removed, hysterectomy.
Many of these are superfluous. These are conditions that can be treated homeopathically more often than not, and so those surgeries are superfluous.
But let’s say you don’t know that. You haven’t even even thought about the possibility of being able to treat tonsils that the ear, nose, throat doctor is eager to remove. Perhaps you don’t know that you don’t really need a hysterectomy for fibroids. Perhaps you don’t know all that, but yet you’re still afraid.
So, this could be an entrée into the world of homeopathy by simply saying, “I am really scared of this surgery.” Or after the surgery, “Boy, I had this terrible anxiety.” Aconitum napellus 200C before bedtime (often) or during a panic attack for a few doses (meaning could be over a couple of days — three or four days — and see how you feel.
And my guess is, more often than not, if you’re following what I’m saying here and you know that Aconitum is the right medicine (because we have others from which to choose), if you feel pretty confident that this is a good descriptor, then Aconitum napellus 200C often will work very nicely for most people.
Kate: (13:47)
How about right during the birthing process: when you’re giving birth, and you have that fear? Would Aconite be the remedy for that?
Joette:
I’m so glad you asked that, Kate. Thank you.
Yes, it’s one of our best medicines for when the mother is going through labor, and she’s saying, “I’m really anxious. I feel like something’s wrong. Something’s wrong with the baby, something’s wrong with me.” And to her, it feels as though she’s intuiting this.
Now, she may be. But it’s more often likely if everything looks proper according to the midwife (or to her family members) that she’s really just fine, but she’s feeling anxious. Then, a dose or two of Aconitum napellus 200C, administered a few minutes apart perhaps, will calm her down, and she’ll be able to move forward and to get to the task at hand. So, it’s a great medicine for during labor and after labor.
Kate: (14:50)
Let’s talk another medicine. Now, if Aconitum doesn’t act, what might you consider next?
Joette:
Well, there’s a common sense in people — especially women, I don’t hear it from men; I hear this from women — who have this inexplicable fear of going over bridges. They’ve always driven over bridges, but something in their life perhaps changed. Maybe they had an event that was frightening. Maybe they were sick from something or whatever the reason is. We don’t even have to know the etiology. But we do know that now this person (or perhaps all their life) has this fear of traveling over a bridge.
Aconitum is certainly something that could be considered, but I actually prefer to use a different medicine when it is specifically for fear of going over bridges. And that’s Argentum nitricum. Short version is Arg nit, but the long version is Argentum nitricum. Again, I like a 200C. Could we use a 30? Yes, we could. If that’s what you’ve got, then that’s what you use.
So, Argentum nitricum 200C. Perhaps, if it’s not something that this person suffers from regularly, just thinking about bridges will make them quake. Perhaps it’s only when they’re traveling. And they really don’t want to go over that bridge, but they know that it’s the only way they’re going to be able to get to their children’s house, so they must do it.
Then the moment they start thinking about it, and the anxiety starts to build, and the fear starts to quake, then, that’s when they utilize the remedy Argentum nitricum 200C. Right as soon as it begins, because why would you suffer it if it was needless?
So, you use the Argentum nitricum. It may need to be used again that day. Maybe once or twice a day for a few days, perhaps leading up to the road trip that’s forthcoming.
And then, now, we watch and see if they’re better. Then you stop. They’ve gone over the bridge.
What we normally see is that they can still go over the bridge. They still have some angst, but it’s not so overwhelming that it’s incapacitating. And then they can breathe comfortably after having gone over the bridge. And if it remains that they still have the anxiety, another dose of Argentum nitricum might be in order.
But now they’ve finished, and it’s over with. Now, say two weeks later, they’re going to have to go back again, and they start thinking about it again. What we should see is a slight lessening of the condition, meaning there’s less intensity to the anxiety. It’s not nearly as great as it was before taking Argentum nitricum.
It might also — number two — last a shorter amount of time.
And number three, there’s a larger space between each time that it occurs. In other words, the next time they have to go over a bridge, they might not be so anxious. But the fourth time they have to go over a bridge, now it’s happening again.
So, what we’re looking for is any one of those three criteria being met. If two of them are met, or if all three of them are met, then we know we are definitely onto the right homeopathic medicine to treat anxiety from going over bridges.
So, the first rule is less intensity, the second, lasting for a shorter period of time, and the third, a larger space between each time the person suffers from this anxiety.
Now, having said that, Argentum nitricum covers many other conditions that have to do with fear, but I’m just using this as an example. There are many other worries. There’s claustrophobia; there’s a tremendous sense of heights — fear of heights — that’s really big. (Bridges often represent heights, but they also represent being hemmed in.) Anxiety about being alone, anxiety about their health, et cetera.
All of those kinds of conditions can also be related to Argentum nitricum. I just use this one as an example because it’s so common
Kate:
And fear of flying in airplanes, also can be …
Joette:
Yes, fear of flying an airplane. Thank you. Yes, yes. Same idea. In a way, it’s a fear of heights. It’s also feeling hemmed in, feeling as though they have no control over anything. Yes, you’re absolutely right.
Kate:
And it could also be the medicine that helps someone for panic attacks and anxiety attacks as well, in general.
Joette: (19:07)
That’s right.
Sometimes when we use a medicine, let’s say we think this really does sound like Aconitum napellus would be the remedy that would help me the most. And it’s used for a few times, and it works nicely. And then the fifth or sixth time it’s needed — say six, eight, 10 months later — it’s not working so well anymore.
So, what is the person experiencing now? And I’m really emphasizing that word “now” because it might be different.
You might think at first blush that “this is just what I had six months ago, and it’s back again. Oh, no.”
Instead, you might actually say, “You know what? It really isn’t quite the same. It really isn’t panic any longer. It’s more about that fear of heights. I have to get on a flight, and I’m just so uncomfortable about it. I can’t really put my finger on it.”
And then they think something has shifted. What has shifted? The homeopathic medicine, Aconitum, likely shifted this person to a different way of experiencing the panic, but a slightly perhaps milder version of it. And then we can consider going to Argentum nitricum.
In other words, just because Aconitum worked in the beginning — and it helped to a certain degree, but it has now stopped helping — doesn’t mean it’s the only medicine. I mean, if I were to crack open my repertory right now, and we looked under anxiety, we would probably see about 80 to 100 medicines that could be considered.
All I’m doing right now — and what I try to do on a regular basis on my blog and this podcast, in my courses and The Academy, et cetera, et cetera, Joette’s Mighty Members — is to get people to see that there are certain homeopathic medicines that are more commonly found useful, so that it can make it a little bit easier to come up with a medicine that could be of help. It’s not a hundred percent my friends, but it’s a great place to start.
Kate:
What’s interesting, I think about Argentum nitricum is that it can also be used for fear of having a panic attack. So …
Joette:
Yes, “the fear of ….” Absolutely. Fear of being alone, anxiety about even looking at a tall building, even looking at a bridge, just thinking of a bridge — not unlike some people get squeamish and have a sense of “ick” when they look at a snake. Just the sight of a snake on a computer screen can send them into a frenzy.
This is the same idea only this is for heights and flying, et cetera, et cetera.
Kate:
Or before you’re going to the dentist, in your …
Joette:
Yes! Yes.
Kate:
Anticipatory … yeah.
Joette: (21:37)
Yes. And so, what I always urge folks to do before they even use a homeopathic medicine is to go to your materia medica and read up on the medicine. See how it fits. Look at the medicines that I’ve discussed here and see if they fit properly into this person’s demeanor.
So, what do you do? You simply go to JoetteCalabrese.com or PracticalHomeopathy.com and scroll down to “Shop.” And there, you’ll find my materia medica that you can purchase.
Kate:
Right! It’s under “Books and CDs.”
But also, you had mentioned earlier that Mindful Homeopathy course, and that is located under “Shop” in “Courses.”
So, you’ll find that there, and we’ll put some links, for you who are listening, to all of these different resources so you can access them easily. They’ll be on with the podcast notes on the website as well.
Joette:
That’s right. So, you can go online and just look at materia medicas — old-time materia medicas that are very valuable. They’re authored by the great minds of homeopathy: Dr. Phatak (P-H-A-T-A-K), Dr. Boericke (B-O-E-R-I-C-K-E).
So, these are online free sites where you can read up on the homeopathic medicine that you’re thinking about taking. And I urge folks to do this.
Again, I love that Kate said, “These are not supplements, these homeopathic medicines.” They’re not regulated by Food and Drug Administration under supplements. They’re regulated as medicines — as drugs, even though they’re not synthetic, and they don’t have side effects, and they are not owned by a particular company.
They’re made from natural substances with no additives. And again, no side effects.
So, this is the medicine that you’ve been waiting for. This is the medicine we all thought we were getting when we used to go to a doctor and ask for something to cure us.
Conventional drugs do not cure, my friends. They hold the symptoms down. They hold it at bay, and eventually it can cause more trouble than what was ever intended.
And often people don’t make that connection. The doctor who prescribed the drug — I can guarantee — will not make that connection that the drug he or she prescribed is now causing the newest condition because it seems unassociated. But we know that it is if we simply read what the side effects are of each of the conventional drugs that a person is taking.
Joette: (24:15)
Okay, we’re going to leave with one last one. So, let’s look at Arsenicum album.
Arsenicum album and Aconitum are very closely related. They are related because it has a quick onset. Arsenicum can also have a quick onset.
But Arsenicum album often has the sense of panic or anxiety related to poison, such as bad food. I mean really bad food, chicken that was tainted. Or a drug that someone took, whether prescribed, over the counter or even street drug.
Arsenicum album can also come about when there’s another kind of poison, such as an animal, poison — if someone has been stung by an insect, and they’re having anxiety or panic.
So, Arsenicum album is similar in that there’s a sense that they’re not going to survive this. They feel as though they’re going to die. Same thing with Aconitum. They feel as though they’re going to die. So, does all of them … feel as though they’re about to die.
But Arsenicum album is different in that the person has a kind of a physical appearance. They get restless. They often pace or they fidget or they’re loquacious. They talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk … the anxiety. Others can observe it. They’re also fastidious. If there’s anything untidy about the surroundings that they’re in, they must tidy it up. They cannot stand anything that’s out of order. So, they will try to tidy things up in spite of being anxious.
There can also be a prominent physical aspect to Arsenicum album. There can be diarrhea. There can be nausea. There can be burning — burning in the stomach, burning in the throat. So, that, too, can be very good indicators to help you choose or differentiate between Aconitum, Argentum nitricum and Arsenicum.
Joette: (26:09)
And these are our anxiety (“A”) remedies, all starting with the letter “A”: Aconitum, Argentum nitricum and Arsenicum. These are our anxiety medicines.
If you or anyone in your family suffers from anxiety attacks, panic, et cetera, it is time to get ahold of these medicines and give them a try.
Whatever you decide to do. Whether you decide to take the first, second or the third — there are many others as well, but let’s start with these three — stay with it. Don’t shift around. Don’t flip over from one to the other. “I don’t know if this is working fast enough. Maybe I need to go to the next one.”
There is a tendency to do that when we’re in a state of anxiety, but I urge you to just give the medicine its due and then move to another one, if there truly is no improvement with the first or the second or even the third, for that matter.
Kate: (27:00)
Okay, good.
And if you want to know more, there is some blogs that are on your website, Joette. And I just want to mention them. And we’ll, again, put the links in the podcast notes for those who want to read up on the medicines in another format.
One is called A Dog with Anxiety? There’s a Homeopathic Solution. Another is Anxiety: When the Elevator Flies to the Top. And the third, You Mean Summer is Over: When Back to School Results in Anxiety and Panic Attacks, Homeopathy Saves the Day.
Oh, I just remembered one more. The blog is titled Must-Have Memorial Day Medicines for Hay Fever, Overindulgence and Anxiety.
So, there, you can find the information that Joette covered and much more on those blogs.
So, as we finish up the podcast today, Joette, can you tell the listeners what might be their next steps if they are trying to learn more about these medicines? Or maybe they’re new, and they don’t know where to start, what would you recommend?
Joette:
I would recommend that you strongly consider joining Joette’s Mighty Members. It’s a very inexpensive first step.
If you’re already a member of Joette’s Mighty Members, you might want to go to Joette’s Mighty Members Plus, which is even more information. And this is information that I’m not willing to give to the general public. Because you’re a member, and you pay a small monthly subscription, I give you information that I will only tell my dear students who are in my Academy or in my other forums, as well as in the Mighties. I’m not willing to share anywhere else.
Then another possibility is to join a Gateway study group. There, you’re going to learn from someone who guides you through the studies — the methods that I use. And you’ll learn it with other people, and that is invaluable to be able to work with others — other people from all over the world.
You meet on Zoom, or you can meet locally as well. That’s a great way to meet people of like minds.
Then, there are also my courses. And there, you’d go to Joette’s Learning Center, and you’ll find my courses. Scroll down and determine which course is best for you. If you purchase it as a group member, you’ll get a substantial discount.
Now, let’s say you’ve used all of these methods, and you’ve also been on my blog for these 14 years that I’ve been producing the blog, and you’ve been listening to this podcast, and, and, and. I want you to remember that there’s always the Practical Academy — The Academy of Practical Homeopathy® — which is a very specific academy where I personally teach my students for a year-long program. And, should they choose to go to the second year, go into the Mastery™ program where I teach you the methods that I’ve been using for the last 36 years of my professional life and how I’ve been able to help tens of thousands of people.
So, there’s a ladder that you can climb. You can stop at rung one. You can stop at rung four. You can go all the way to the top and go through The Academy and the Mastery™ program.
And so, with that, I wish you the best. I want you to have, my friends, sprezzatura. It’s a beautiful Italian word, which means knowing how to do something or presenting something that is really seemingly quite complex — or is actually quite complex — but presenting it in a way that is with beautiful nonchalance.
I want you simply to know Aconitum for this situation, Argentum nitricum for that situation, Arsenicum album for this other situation. No one will have to know all the time and effort that you’ve put into learning these three medicines. What they will see only is this perfection of this medicine in your hands.
Kate:
Thank you, Joette. That was so helpful.

This is the Practical Homeopathy® Podcast, episode number 128.
Hi! I am Kate, and welcome back to the podcast. I’m so glad that you’re here joining us today to learn more about homeopathy. I can’t wait for you to meet our special guest today.
Actually, for those of you who have listened to some of Joette’s podcasts, you may have already heard our next guest on Podcast 60, but she is going to share so much information.
Really, if you are at a desk or somewhere where you can take notes, you want to do that. And if not, you can always catch up later with the podcast on JoetteCalabrese.com where the transcript is also available. So, don’t worry if you’re driving; you can take notes later or read the transcript.
So, with that, I want to get started … dive right in. Lisa, welcome to the podcast.
Lisa:
Thanks, Kate. Lovely to be here once again.
Kate:
Yes. I can’t wait for you to tell us what’s been going on since the last time that we talked. So, tell us a little bit again for those students who may not have heard Podcast 60, who you are, and a little bit about your story.
Lisa:
Love to. My name is Lisa Heinrichs. I am a Practical Homeopath®. I am a wife; I am a mother; and I solely use homeopathy for my family. I am located in Sylvan Lake, Alberta, Canada. And so, my journey began actually with Joette when I was reading in a Weston A. Price magazine years ago.
And she had said, “We need to be the healers in our family. We need to be able to take care of them.” And that resonated with me very deeply because I had always been interested in health and wellness.
I did not have a family at the time, which was … I do have an advantage over some people because I was able to start fresh with my kids and know that I didn’t want to raise them using medications … unnecessarily, of course. Because there’s a time and a place. I always say that. Okay?
So, I listened to Joette. I got all of her recordings and her little books and just dove right in. Got myself a Top 100 homeopathic kit and just was practicing on anybody who would let me.
Lisa: (03:09)
So, fast forward a couple of years, I decided that this is what I wanted to do. Loved it. And so I started to research schools. I wanted to go to a Canadian school. I wanted to go to a reputable school, obviously, and found one in Ontario that I went to.
So, I went to this school. It was the only option. Joette did not have her school then. And most of the time I was simply just doing my best to get through it, as we call it. And some of us have mentioned in The Academy, classical school is kind of like busy work. It’s like, why are we doing this? But we have to do it, and I’m sure we’ll get to the meat of it soon.
So, I just plowed through, and I did actually very well because I like school. I like learning. But it was also very slow going, and it was lonely. I had a tutor, sort of, that I can call on if I needed to, but I was essentially by myself.
Lisa: (04:02)
So, when The Academy of Practical Homeopathy® came out, I put a pause on my classical school, and I went immediately into The Academy to the pioneer year, I think. Hey, is that we’re calling it? The “pioneer year”?
Kate:
I think so, yes.
Lisa:
So, I went into APH. And we were essentially forced — in a very good way — to be in study groups with other students so we could study together and work together, which is great.
And so, a lot of these ladies that I met in the first year, I followed into Mastery™ and then, now, into Mastermind. And these people are my friends and it’s just … I cannot tell you how important it is to stay linked together.
And I’m so grateful for Joette and the team who came up with “You need to have study buddies,” right? What a great concept!
Kate:
Yes. Study buddies!
Lisa:
No, as I was doing — I just got to say this funny thing — because as I was doing my passport renewal, it was like, “Oh, you have to give a couple of references who you’ve known at least two years.” And I’m like, “Oh, these people could be my references!”
Kate:
Awwww.
Lisa:
So, I cannot imagine not having these people in my life because I think no matter how much you think you know, you could always learn more. And these women are in it, right? And are sharing, and it’s … I love it.
Kate: (05:26)
What is going on in your life now, Lisa? What does it look like? How are you applying all this knowledge that you gained in school?
Lisa:
Well, as soon as I graduated from The Academy, I opened up a practice. And so before, when I was in classical school, you weren’t allowed to see people. You were not allowed to treat people … nothing.
But at the same time, I was taking all these courses from Joette. So, I would secretly be helping people and be learning as I went with taking classical at the same time.
So, when I was ready to go into practice, I already had a network of people who knew me, who knew about me, and so it was quite easy to start up.
So, I see clients Monday to Friday. Also, I’m very active on my social media, so I take a page out of Joette’s book when she just shares the information. She freely gives it away. So, every other day I am sharing a reel. I’m sharing tips. I do a free blog to all my subscribers every other week.
And so, I really stay active. I really try and stay on top of everything. And I really am so passionate about promoting homeopathy, and how you can use it, and how you can exchange it for your OTCs (your over-the-counters). Right?
That’s kind of my focus right now, which I love. It’s like my stress relief. Go check me out.
Kate:
Well, a little tidbit that people probably don’t know about you is that you have a passion for acting, and you’ve done some acting. And so, really, you’re very animated and creative in the social media things that you share. So, I know we enjoy them.
Lisa:
Right. Yes. That was my first love … was theater. So, yeah, I get to be on the stage writing my own scripts. It’s lovely. Okay. And using it for good!
So, yes, that’s what I am doing right now. I’m in practice and balance between home life and work life.
Kate: (07:22)
What are you seeing from what you learned … now, taking that to practice? I know we were talking a little earlier about some things that you’re noticing that Joette taught, and now, you’re seeing it. So, what are those things?
Lisa:
Because I have been with Joette for so long — I would say, like, gosh … 13, 14 years now … something like that — everything that she has said, now, I see in practice with everybody. Things people say; the things people do. It’s like, “Oh, oh, okay, this is just … I’ve “arrived” because …
So, lemme just say, lemme just really stress this because it’s so important to be … you know, we’re all starting out. We’re all learning. But never stop taking classes, taking courses, stay with the people who have taught you. Read! Read, read, read, read, read. Because you need that confidence moving forward because it’s so easy to get knocked off balance.
I would not be the confident prescriber I am if I didn’t have Mastery™, if I didn’t have Mastermind. Right? And learning from my colleagues now is so important. Because when people say to me — and what Joette had always said — people say to me, “I don’t see change.”
Lisa: (08:38)
“I don’t see change. Really, Lisa. I don’t really see anything.”
It’s water off the duck’s back. “Okay, well, let’s just look.”
And 99% of the time, there is change, but it’s so subtle. It’s so gentle; they don’t even notice it. And human suffering, like Joette says, we forget it. We forget our sufferings as we get better, which is a beautiful thing.
But the homeopath has to be completely in control because they took good notes, took a good case, used the correct remedies because of what we’ve learned. And generally, we see lovely changes just giving it time.
Lemme also say this too, about the time thing … because I will say at the beginning of every case (if it’s a fungal case or if it’s a skin case) I will say, “Give me a year.”
Now, it won’t take a year to see change, but I need a year so that it takes the pressure off of the client; it takes the pressure off of me; and it takes the pressure off of homeopathy.
We have to give it time. What is it? A tincture of time.
Kate:
Yes, that’s what Joette says.
Lisa:
Yes. And I was actually learning about that phrase, too. It’s an old English phrase. (I think so. Somebody’s going to correct me, I think probably. But that’s okay. So, that means they’re listening.)
One of the biggest things that I will always remember in my mind is when I was working with a fellow who had toenail fungus.
I always make sure to get my clients to take pictures. Okay? You need pictures for skin cases, fungal cases, warts. Anything that you can see, take a picture of so we can measure change. Okay? It might be subtle, but it’s there. So, I always say, “Take a picture. Show me these pictures.” And they have it in their files.
He messaged me at two months when we had our follow-up. “I don’t see any changes.”
I’m like, “Okay, well, it does take time. It does take time.”
Now, this is a guy who had been on medications for 20-odd years … trying to deal with this. TWENTY years.
He gave conventional medication 20 years. Now it’s been two months with me. Two months! And I was a student then, too, right? Everything was very cost-efficient. And yet he said, “Okay, I’ll give it another two months.”
Okay.
Gave it another two months, messaged me back before our next follow-up and said, “I don’t see change. I’m going to cancel our appointment.”
And I said, “Okay, I’m sorry that it did not meet your expectations. Would you mind just sending me one picture of your foot now?”
I use this as an example all the time, Kate, because there was drastic change. Drastic.
Kate:
Really?
Lisa:
“Okay,” I said. “I understand, and I’m not trying to get you back, but do you see that there’s a change?”
“Yes.”
And yet, not enough — not fast enough. He left. He stopped.
Kate:
I wonder how much change there was in that 20 years. You know?
Lisa:
Right? They were bad.
Anyway, so that’s the kind of things. It’s just like for me, it’s like … and like Joette said — here’s another thing — “You are going to lose people. You’re going to lose people, and you just got to move on. It’s just how it is.”
Right? Thick skin … rhino skin, right? That’s what you sort of have to have doing this, right? Yeah.
Kate: (11:47)
So, share some more with us, Lisa. I’m sure you have a lot of stories. Can you share a few more with us?
Lisa:
Oh, yes. I would love to.
Okay. The first story I want to share with you is about a client, and we’ll call him Bill.
Now, I was actually supposed to see Bill’s son first, but his situation was so intense that he asked if I could see him first.
Now, with Bill, he had been suffering with extreme abdominal pain to the point where he had to take time off of work, and he had a very important job. Not only was it an important job, but he’s also providing for his family. So, it’s a big deal if he can’t go to work.
His pain was at a 10 out of 10 every single night, and he had been to every specialist and tried everything. He had been through the wringer to try to bring himself — get himself — some relief. The last specialist he told me about, he said that this specialist … when they were trying, these doctors, they’re trying to help him and going through every single test.
And the last test was about … he told him that we want to do a, oh, gosh, it was an MRI on his stomach, and we want to see if there’s sufficient blood flow to the abdominal area. I’m like, “It sounds a little desperate like they’re grasping at some straws there.”
And he said, ‘Yeah, yeah, he totally is, right? But at least they’re trying. I got to give them that, right?”
So, he comes to me, and so you can imagine there’s a lot of pressure on me. Right? It was Thursday. This is a Thursday I talked with him, okay? And I had his schedule, and I knew exactly what he needed to do. But again, this is a lot of pressure because he’s in excruciating pain; this is his first time using homeopathy; and it’s a Thursday; and he needs it immediately because he is in so much pain.
So, he’s paying for drop-ship like the airplane — which is very expensive from the pharmacy — because he can’t have pellets. He has to have it in liquid, too, right, because he has such an extreme sensitivity to dairy.
So, I called the pharmacy. I make sure — like, if anybody knows me, they know I’m thorough. After the case, I order these right away because — and thank God — I had been studying for so long, it didn’t take me long to figure out this case and what he needed. I immediately wrote it up, immediately made the order, called the pharmacy: “Will it get delivered tomorrow?” Because after tomorrow, we’ve got the weekend, and he’s just, like, he’s in so much pain. This is insane, right?
“Yes, it will be delivered tomorrow, overnight, drop-shipped.”
Awesome.
And so, then he gets them the next day. “I got them.”
Great.
I don’t hear from him over the weekend, and it’s like …
Kate:
You can’t see her right now, but she’s making a face like thinking, “Oh my goodness, what’s going to happen? What’s going to happen?”
Lisa:
Right? He messages me … ‘cause he is so polite. He messages me over the weekend … after the weekend … Monday, and said, “As soon as I started taking them, I felt immediate relief.”
I was like, “Oh, thank God.” Like, I was so grateful.
And I’ve worked with him since, now, because it was a long way back. It was a long way back because of the drugs … because of the drugs that he had to be subjected to for years and years and years and years and years. And we can talk about that ad infinitum … how it’s the drugs that is causing this.
But anyway, I digress at this moment.
And he wrote me a testimonial, and I was just telling you, Kate, that I’ve yet to read it. But when people write test…
I only ask for testimonials when it’s been kind of an extreme case. And the people who give me the testimonials, it’s very lovely. And it’s when they’ve been through something that everything else failed them. But homeopathy.
Homeopathy.
Kate:
It’s really sad that people have to go through all those other things to get to homeopathy. I wish more people knew about it in the beginning so they didn’t have to go through that suffering.
So, those of you who are younger and listening to this podcast really commend you for studying this and learning more about it. It will save you so much in time and suffering and expenses.
Lisa:
Oh, yeah. So much.
I’m so grateful. I always prayed for wisdom. Before I had babies, I always prayed for wisdom, and this is it. This is it! We don’t use any of that. We don’t use that. We use homeopathy.
And my kids know homeopathy, right? It’s beautiful thing. Yeah. Again, again, again. And in Podcast 60 will talk about how modern medicine saved my son’s life. So, I will always be grateful for that. But mismanaged acutes? Ooof.
Lisa: (16:30)
But anyway, let’s move on to the next one. Do you want to talk about the next one? My next one?
Kate:
Yes, let’s.
Lisa:
This one is more so, so important to keep studying and keep learning. If you really want to get it, right, you have to keep learning and understand how these medicines work.
So, the next story I want to tell you about is a case of a torn meniscus. Now, this woman I was working with, we’ll call her Flo, had other things going on like we normally do. How often?
And so, as we’re working on other parts, everything’s falling into place. She’s doing great, but it’s this knee, right? And at first, she didn’t even know what it was. So, I’m using all of the pain remedies and torn meniscus remedies that we learned about in the pain course — great course. (They’re all great.) But that one specifically is where it talks about the torn meniscus, and what to use and what to try, and that it takes a long time, right? It takes a long time.
We were getting nowhere. The pain was, as she said, “12 out of 10” with what we were using. But she refused to give up.
She had faith in homeopathy. She’d seen it work in other areas of her life. She had faith in her practitioner — me, that I would find something. It took time. It took time.
Now, because of the training that I had through Joette in how to study materia medica, repertory, I was able to find the remedy that she needed within — she said, oh gosh — days? The 12 out of 10 went to zero, ZERO out of 10.
Kate:
Wow. Wow.
Lisa:
I was like, what!? Now, because she stayed with it and trusted her “detective,” I was able to solve that case. And she’s good. No pain, still to this day. If she gets a twinge, she’ll take the remedy, and it’s gone.
Kate:
Wow.
Lisa:
I know. Amazing.
Kate:
So incredible. Yeah. So thankful for these medicines.
Lisa:
Yes. And she is older, right? She’s older. She’s probably late sixties, early seventies. Doesn’t matter how old you are, right? The body can repair itself, given the correct stimulus.
Kate:
Yes.
Lisa: (19:00)
Oooh, oooh, oooh! This one’s fun. So, this is a friend of mine. We’re calling her Sally, and Sally uses homeopathy all the time. I help her all the time — her and her family and her animals. She just can feel free to message me and say, “Lisa … okay…”
Because tried it! So, she doesn’t call me and say, “Lisa, what do I do for this?”
She’ll say, “Lisa, I’ve tried this, this, this and this, and nothing’s acting.”
And I said, “Okay, give me the symptoms.”
“Okay, it’s burning. Yeah, super itchy.”
I should back up. She had a bee sting — several bee stings. She has hives, and she had several bee stings.
And she had done the Ledum, right? She had done the Apis. She had put the Calendula on. Can’t remember what else things she’s tried … just other things she was trying to try. I think there’s, like, her cousin said, “Put a copper penny on it,” or something! She did everything. I said, you [inaudible] with me before that.
And so, I said, “Okay.” I’m thinking in my brain, remedies. Because that’s what we do. The more you learn, I love it! It’s like one of the other APH students or graduates had said, “It’s like a superpower.” And sometimes it feels like. I loved that.
Kate:
I love that analogy. Yeah, that’s great!
Lisa:
This is what I do day in and day out, right? I’m immersed in it, like Joette says. I just am. I’m immersed in it. I don’t have a whole lot of a social life. When you see those reels, those are like my late-night socials. That’s what I do. That’s my social.
Anyways, back to the story. So, I’m thinking about remedies going on in my mind, right? Okay, what this and this and that. And I said, “Are you restless?”
And she sends me back a meme of an ostrich dancing up and down, dancing up and down, losing his mind.
And I went, “Oh! You need Arsenicum album?”
And she’s like, “Okay, I’ll try it.”
Totally worked.
She said, “What potency?”
I said, “What do you have?”
“200?”
Now, normally, I probably would’ve gone a little bit lower to start, but that’s what she had.
So, you use what you have, right? Give it a go.
She said, after the second dose, brought it all the way down. All the way down. And she had to go to a party where there was a vet there. And the vet is very, very medical. She didn’t want to show up freaking out about these bites because she would be quite restless and be told, “You need to take this antihistamine,” or “You need to take this med. You just need to.”
She wanted to prove that homeopathy could do it.
And I said, “You could just say nothing.”
She’s like, “No!”
So, she did. She went there. She’s like, “Oh, no, I’m good. I don’t need anything. I have my homeopathy.”
So, love it. Love it. So that was a fun story.
And again, it’s like you have the symptoms. If the obvious remedies aren’t doing it, then you go to the next one. You’ll always find it. You will find the one. There’s got to be the one.
I always say that too, right? When Joette would pick up the materia medica and be like, “The answer is in here, or the repertory. The answer is in here. I just got to find it.”
The more you learn, the more you get into practice, the more you see that’s what starts to happen. You don’t get the obvious ones anymore. Right? Those are the patterns, too.
Kate: (22:04)
That leads us to being a detective. You mentioned that earlier, that that’s what your job is. You are a detective.
Lisa:
I’m Miss Marple.
Kate:
These are great stories, Lisa. I am thrilled with what is happening in your life and what you’re accomplishing. And can you just share with us some final thoughts as we wrap up the podcast?
Lisa: (22:27)
Yes. You know, the biggest thing that I’m seeing, that I’m hearing right now from people, is that — and again, I’m going to quote Joette because she would say, “People will say, ‘I didn’t want to use the drug. I didn’t want to use the antibiotic. I just didn’t know there was another way.’ Well, now you do!”
So, I ran into a mom. This is one of many kind of encounters that I see. And she said, “You know, I take for granted that my family and I … we’re in good health. So, when my daughter had an ear infection, I didn’t know what to do.”
So, in my mind, of course, I’m going through the remedies for ear infections: Chamomilla, Hepar sulph, Pulsatilla, Calc Phos. And she’s telling me now, “Well, I didn’t know. So, we went to urgent care.” And they’re saying, “Well, here’s your antibiotic. They have to take this antibiotic.”
And she’s thinking to herself, this mother, “But I don’t want to use this. I know there is another way. There’s got to be another way.”
And for me, that’s my tagline. There is another way, and this is it.
And I said to her, “Yeah, you’re in good health now. But mismanaged acutes will lead to chronic illness later in life. You have to learn this stuff if you want to take care of your family. If you’ll want to avoid those chronic conditions later in life, it is so important to learn this medicine. You have to start somewhere. You can’t just learn by osmosis and have the book next to you. You have to … Yes, it’s a lot of work. I know! I’ve done it! It is, but it’s so worth it.”
Imagine being that mom now — being like me, where when people told me that they went to the hospital because of croup, I was like, “Really? People go to the hospital because of that? I just used Spongia. Worked like a charm. I don’t get it.”
Learn this medicine. Learn this medicine now. Just start now. Buy a book. Just start reading now.
Kate:
And if you want to know where to start, Joette’s blogs are free and a great resource. And she also published a materia medica book called “Practical Homeopathy for Busy Families.” This is great to own because you can study the homeopathic medicines and how to use them. And Joette also shares some homeopathic protocols throughout for various conditions.
So, if you want to go a bit further, the Gateway to Practical Homeopathy Study Guide is where you can learn about homeopathy in a group. And you can put together a group, or you can join another group. It’s a six-week guided curriculum with a discussion guide.
And of course, Joette has many courses, so check those out on her website, such as Antibiotic Alternative; the Skin Course; Good Gut, Bad Gut; and many others.
Now, I know Lisa mentioned a little earlier in the program about The Academy of Practical Homeopathy®, which is a year-long immersive educational curriculum allowing you to take your pursuit of excellence in homeopathy to the next level.
It’s a more formalized education. You can help your loved ones, church members, and even the broader community by opening a practice should you desire after going through this year-long study.
And if you want to, you can go on from there for a second year called Mastery™. It’s an immersive postgraduate education involving extensive repetorization and casework. And I know that you went through that, Lisa, and you did a great job.
And all this information will be linked in the podcast notes on the website if you want to know right where to go.
Lisa, thank you so much for sharing all these stories with us and your life and what’s going on, and how you’ve applied the knowledge that you’ve learned. And it’s so wonderful that you’re able to help so many people. So, thank you for sharing.
Lisa:
Thanks for having me, Kate. Such a pleasure.
Joette:

Kate:
This is the Practical Homeopathy® Podcast, episode number 127, with Joette Calabrese.
Hi, I am Kate, and I’m here today with Joette.
Joette:
Hi Kate and friends.
Kate:
Hi. We want to thank you — all of our listeners —for taking the time to be here with us today. This is so important, and we commend you for taking these steps towards deepening your knowledge with homeopathy. This will help protect you and your family and your loved ones. So, welcome!
Joette:
Knowing how to use these medicines will keep you not only on par with what’s going on in your family on a day-to-day basis, but as you age, it keeps you relevant.
“Grandma, what do I do for a back that aches?” “Grandma, my ear hurts. What should I do?”
That’s where we want to be. We want to be in that position as we age.
Kate:
All right, so today we’re going to talk about back pain. So, Joette, let’s just dive right in. Tell us about what we can do when we have the pain in our back. And maybe it’s something that’s just mildly irritating, or maybe it’s something debilitating that stops us from our daily lives.
And I also want you to talk about thinking outside the box and what might be causing the back pain. Because sometimes, it truly might just be muscles or something with our spine, but it could also be some other things. So maybe let’s start there.
Joette: (02:29)
Yeah, let’s start with that because it could be the kidneys. If you know where your kidneys are — and you should know where they are — it’s the rather lower back right around the waist on either side. And … could be kidney stones. Could be kidney colic (which doesn’t really tell us much of anything. It just tells us that there’s pain in the kidney or kidneys). Could be a kidney infection, and that’s something that we don’t play around with. You want to make sure that that gets attention right away.
But you can also get back pain — I know this is going to sound strange to some people — from eating foods that are not good for you. Some people are so sensitive to wheat that if they eat a sandwich, they get back pain. And that doesn’t mean that they’ve had it all their lives like that. Could have just been developed since they were given antibiotics. Because antibiotics are often the cause of food intolerances — subsequent food intolerances — after their use.
So, it could be any of those.
Joette: (03:29)
And interestingly, years ago, I was in my thirties, and I was nursing one of my babies. I don’t remember which one it was. And so, I did not drink enough water. I know I didn’t because you lose your thirst sometimes. And when you’re nursing, you really have to pay attention to drinking a good amount of good water.
And so, I went to the chiropractor, and he adjusted me. And I was going about twice a week, and the pain was really … wasn’t excruciating, but it certainly was a nuisance-plus.
And so, every time I went to him, he would adjust me, and I would feel a little better. And it was fine, but then I’d have to go back again. It was going on like this for weeks, many weeks. And then, one day, I got a newsletter that I used to subscribe to.
In those days it was snail mail. And in the newsletter, it said, “Back pain. Are you sure you’re not dehydrated?”
So, I thought, “Wow, that’s awfully simple.” And so since I’m nursing and perhaps the reason … maybe that is it … because I don’t drink much water at all.”
So, I started to … I actually flooded myself with water for a day, which is not a good plan to do on a regular basis. But for that first day … and by the second day of drinking a good deal more water, the pain went away. It was simply melted away and never came back. After having suffered from that for many weeks, if not months.
So, we want to always look at what is the simple way of looking at something. If your garden looks wilty, you might want to water it. If the tomato plant looks like it’s not doing so well, perhaps it’s not enough water. Perhaps it’s the shade, that you planted it in the wrong place. Perhaps it’s crowded by other tomato plants.
Whatever the reason is, let’s use common sense first. And then we can move from there to, “Okay, what can we do homeopathically?”
Kate: (05:18)
Good. So, there are many remedies that we could think about for back pain, but maybe just talk about a few of them so our listeners have a place to start.
Joette:
Of course, it depends on which part of the back. Is it lumbar? Is it cervical? What started it? At what point did it begin? You want to try to think of that because sometimes it’s as simple as, “Well, ever since we started sleeping on that new mattress, I’ve had that problem.” Or “Ever since that plane flight when my neck was crooked, and I fell asleep there, it’s been uncomfortable or stiff or painful ever since.”
So, we do want to look at the possibility of the etiology, meaning what could have caused this in my day-to-day life?
Kate:
And sometimes it might even be that “Oh, I tripped, and I just stepped the wrong way and moved my back and just did something to those muscles when that happened.” And we really need to think about that because in the day — the day that we’re having that pain — we may not remember that that happened.
So, it’s always good, like you said, to look back and what was happening or what happened the day before. “What have I been doing? Have I been drinking water? Have I been all of a sudden exercising? What’s going on in my life?”
Joette:
Are my exercises more rigorous? Am I eating more wheat? And again, I don’t want you to think that wheat is a bad food. But for some people, it is. It’s like a poison of sorts. So, you want to take that into consideration as well.
So, what I find is that often there are two or three main remedies here that are most commonly used.
One of them is when the person gets up in the morning, and their back is stiff … or it’s more painful, or they feel crooked, or they feel old. Those first few steps are very uncomfortable, if not frankly, painful.
And then once they limber up … “I must stretch. I have to stretch. And so, if I don’t stretch, then my back bothers me.” That generally is a call for the remedy Rhus tox. And so, it’s Rhus toxicodendron … for short, it’s Rhus tox. And we can use that in a 30 or a 200, and we can use that a couple of times a day until the pain goes away.
Joette: (07:26)
Now, let me also say this: that when I say we use a medicine twice a day, it’s not like a supplement or a vitamin where you take it forever. No, these are medicines. Homeopathy is medicine.
So, when we take a medicine for a specific condition, when the condition is resolved (or at least quite nearly resolved), we don’t keep taking it. We stop and allow the body just to carry on from where it was before and allow the medicine also to carry on.
Now, if it comes back again, we’re not going to say, “Oh no, it’s back again!”
Instead, we say, “Oh, cool. Oh, this is really great. It’s back again. I know exactly what to do because I did it last time. I go right back to my Rhus tox 30, twice daily, until the pain is resolved once again.”
So that’s the first medicine.
Joette: (08:27)
The second medicine that is very common that can be used even alongside Rhus tox is Symphytum, S-Y-M-P-H-Y-T-U-M … Symphytum 200C. And that, too, may be used twice daily. And that is an overall muscular and bone and joint pain. So that covers a lot of different kinds of conditions related to the back.
And sometimes, we can actually use Symphytum 200 mixed with Rhus tox, meaning taking them in the mouth at the same time, twice daily.
I don’t know that we need to go that far. If what I’ve described is that feeling very old and wretched on first movement and then getting better as the person limbers up. If that is there, then Rhus tox is probably the medicine for that particular condition.
Kate:
So how would one know if they should use the Symphytum AND the Rhus tox?
Joette:
I would use Symphytum and Rhus tox mixed together when it feels like Rhus tox is sort of helping, but it’s not doing enough. It’s a little improved. It was a screaming 8 every day. Now, it’s down to a 5, so it’s not moving it along enough. Then, I would add Symphytum 200 along with Rhus tox 30.
Joette: (09:46):
Now, there’s a medicine that is very useful for back pain from having picked up something that’s too heavy, lifting the sofa, or working too heavily in the gym, or digging in the garden too vigorously. Then we’re going to use something like Arnica.
And Arnica montana can be used in a 30 or a 200 … and that’s from having been overused, maybe even abused. So, when we abuse the back by overusing it, then Arnica montana 200, twice daily, is an excellent medicine.
Now, let me also point out that Rhus tox sometimes comes into play in this kind of a situation as well.
But, in general, if someone has overused their body, overused their back, too strenuous an exercise program, et cetera, we often use Arnica 200 all by itself, twice daily, until very much better.
If there’s no improvement in somewhat short order — days, maybe even a week or so — then it’s time to reassess and look at something else.
Joette: (10:51)
Now, there’s another medicine that I favor for back pain, and that is, again, when the body is overused. And if Arnica doesn’t help, then we go to Bryonia.
Now, Bryonia has a very distinct kind of pain. It’s the kind of pain that hurts only on movement — not first movement and better on limbering up, like Rhus tox; not overall pain, like Symphytum — but rather pain that is very specific.
Every time the person moves, it hurts. And a movement could be as simple as coughing. The person coughs, “Oh my gosh, there’s that pain.” Or when they get up out of bed, there’s pain. And they continually have pain throughout the day. It does not relieve from limbering up.
So, that’s Bryonia. And I like Bryonia in a 30 and, again, twice daily.
And these medicines, what’s so lovely about them is that what I’m describing here is kind of for an acute situation, having slept on the plane the wrong way, or having overexerted themselves in the garden, or et cetera, et cetera. But these medicines are just as valuable for a chronic condition. This back pain could have been going on for weeks, months, maybe even on and off for years. It matters not. These are still the same medicines, the same frequency, the same potency.
Kate: (12:14)
Joette, what about Mag phos? Could that be useful for back pain as well?
Joette:
Yes. Mag phos — Magnesium phosphoricum [Magnesia phosphorica] — is particularly valuable when we find that the person wants to have heat exerted or pressed up against the back. And the more pressure exerted with the heat, the better the person feels.
So, someone might say, “I feel a tremendous pain in my back, and if you would just hold that hot water bottle right there and press it really hard, that could help me feel a little more comfortable.” That is a call for Magnesium phosphoricum [Magnesia phosphorica] or Mag phos.
And that can be used in a 6 or a 30 and used two to three times a day if it’s a chronic condition. If it’s an acute, you could take it every 15 minutes for the first hour and, after that, every hour that follows that.
Kate:
Yeah, and then you would gradually space that out as the condition improves.
Joette:
Just like any medicine, you don’t take it “just because.” You take it … well, actually, I should say, there are a lot of drugs that are given “just because” you hit a certain age.
So, let’s put it this way, if you’re going to be taking a Tylenol for a headache, you’re not going to take it twice a day, every day forever more. It’s a medicine. It’s a drug. It’s intended to take care of the condition and move you on to your life.
That’s the same as homeopathy, generally speaking — and there are extenuating circumstances occasionally. But generally speaking, we’re going to use the medicine until it’s no longer needed. And then we’re going to open it up and use it less frequently … less frequently. Still okay? Okay. Even less frequent than that.
So, instead of maybe three or four times a day, you’re going to go to twice a day. And as it improves, okay, now only once a day.
Okay, now how is it? Okay, it’s gone. Great. Then we stop. We halt the use of the medicine, and then we resume it as needed in the future, should it arise again.
Kate:
There’s also a blog that you had written in 2023 called “Advanced Disease and Back Pain.” So, that’s another good reference for those of you who want to read more about back pain and see some of this information written down in a blog.
So, today’s podcast was short and sweet, but I think we covered a lot of remedies, and I’m sure this is going to help you or someone that you know. So, thank you so much Joette for the valuable information that you shared today.

Hi, and welcome back to the podcast. We’re so glad that you’ve joined us today. We love that you’re here and are so excited about your homeopathy journey. So, thanks for being here.
Today, we have a special treat. Joette is going to be talking to a special guest, so I’m just going to let her take it away.
Joette:
Thanks, Kate. So, I’d like to introduce Kirsten Decca.
I’ve gotten to know Kirsten pretty well through the last few years because she’s been a student of mine for some time. She joined The Academy — and we’re going to hear all about that — and then, she went into the next year, the Mastery™ program. And now, she’s in our Mastermind program, and I really wanted you to hear her story.
So, welcome, Kirsten.
Kirsten:
Thanks, Joette. It’s a pleasure to be here. Thank you for having me.
Joette:
Yeah, this is going to be good today.
So, I’m interested in knowing — as many people are — a little bit about your life, what you do and what brought you to homeopathy.
Kirsten: (02:04)
Okay. Well, I’m a mom of six. My husband and I live here in the northwestern part of Florida. My husband is retired Air Force, and we have moved up here kind of out into the country. We have a little homestead, and we raise chickens, and we have dogs and some goats and horses.
My journey to homeopathy is interesting. I have a background in health care. I’m a licensed physical therapist assistant. Although I’m retired, I haven’t been in a clinic for probably, oh gosh, over 20 years now. But I’ve always loved anatomy and physiology. I’d like to say health care, although I feel different about what it actually is now.
But my dad was actually a pharmaceutical rep, so I was raised with drugs. They were everywhere. It’s just what we did. In fact, I didn’t really know that there was even another way. If you were sick, that’s just what you did.
You took a pill. Or actually, we used to have — I don’t know if you remember Kaopectate®, Joette. You remember?
Joette:
I do.
Kirsten:
So, we used to have it everywhere. And I don’t know why I thought it tastes good, but we would just drink it. We would go sneak it out of my dad’s samples and take Kaopectate. I don’t know how we ever went to the bathroom. But anyway, so to say that drugs were commonplace is just an understatement.
I went to school to be the physical therapist assistant. I had played sports for years and years, had gotten injured and had had multiple surgeries. So again, drugs, drugs and more drugs during surgery after surgery.
And then I didn’t really question until probably most of us … when we had children. So, I had my kids. And then, I had a son that began displaying some behavioral issues. And we just noticed something was different, and he was diagnosed with Asperger’s.
So, that really kind of started me on my journey of questioning kind of what I had done. Was anything that I had done contributed to this? And so, I started reading, educating myself, and then I started asking questions at the doctor’s office, which that did not go over really well, and I began to get pushback.
And so that even pushed me further in questioning. “Okay, why is this an issue? These are my kids. You would think they would welcome it.” I really expected the doctors to pat you on the head and go, “Good job!” But that was not the case.
So, we started deciding not to do certain things, and I began to get kicked out of doctor’s offices. And I started doing my own research. And for my son … we started changing diet; we added herbs; we did all those things. And we did see some things get better, but we just never saw it go away. And if you stop doing those things, issues came back.
So, then I had a friend who was kind of on that same journey — gluten-, dairy-free. She was actually a client of yours, Joette. She introduced me to homeopathy, and I thought I saw her one day eating pizza.
And I thought, “Oh my goodness, she has given up! She’s just decided she’s going to go out and enjoy food.” I just couldn’t believe it. I knew her diet was very restrictive.
And I said, “What are you doing? Why are you eating pizza?
“And she’s like, “Homeopathy.”
And I thought, “What are you talking about?” And I probably wasn’t really nice about it. I probably was like, “What is that? It sounds crazy.”
[00:05:30] So she just very nicely smiled, does what you tell people to do, you know? Just leave your little seeds and walk away.
And I just over time asked her a few more questions, and she invited me to a Gateway.
Kirsten: (05:43)
So, that’s really where I started … was that Gateway class. And I did that Gateway class and started to implement those medicines for my kids, for other people. And that’s really, I began to see some things change.
And then fast forward just a little bit of time (that was 2019). So, spring of 2020 (where we all know there were some crazy things happening), and I hurt my foot.
I love to garden. And I was tilling some manure into the garden and left something out and was walking around in flip-flops at night and shoved this tool right between my toes.
And I did all the things. I took Ledum, and I took Arnica. I took a few other things, but I still didn’t really know. I was not proficient. I didn’t really know what I was doing. So, I called my friend and said, you know, “What else do I do?”
And she helped me. But it continued to kind of get infected, and it got pretty nasty. And I developed cellulitis.
Kirsten: (06:44)
And I had called some friends of mine that were in the medical profession. And they said, “You’ve got to go in. You’ve got to go in. You need IV antibiotics.” But I did not want … at that time, I was like, “This is not a time I want to go to the hospital. I’m just going to really try this on my own.”
And I tell people, it was my “burn the ships” moment. I was like, “This is do or die for me. I couldn’t tell somebody else not to go, but I’m not going. And so, I’m going to figure this out.”
Well, amazingly, it wasn’t super painful. It looked like it should have been, but I was still kind of able to move around on it. And it stopped.
So, it looked bad, but it wasn’t progressing. It wasn’t getting any worse. And I think it was your article, Joette, that I came across. It was on MRSA because it looked very much like MRSA to me.
Joette:
Yes.
Kirsten:
And so, when I read that, I was like, I need to do Hyper/Ars [Hypericum perforatum 200 mixed with Arsenicum album 200], and I added Pyrogenium.
And when I did that, within 24 hours, I saw a shift. I saw the redness go down; the swelling go down; normal color started to return. And I knew I was on the right track. And within a week of that, it was completely gone. You wouldn’t have even known I had had an infection.
Joette: (08:00)
It’s an amazing story because I’ve seen the photographs of it.
Joette:
Cellulitis is nothing to play around with. You either go in and get the antibiotics and do what you’re told to do at an ER. OR you know what you’re doing homeopathically.
And you knew what you were doing. Yeah.
And I’m sure that you questioned it because we all do when we’re not well. “Uh-oh! Am I doing the right thing? Let me believe I’m doing the right …” And then you go back, and you read up on those remedies. “Am I sure this is the right remedy?” (After taking it.)
I’m sure that went through your mind that day.
Kirsten:
It did. And this is where community comes in. The friend that was helping me came to my house, and she continued to reassure me. “You’re on the right track. It’s okay. I think you’re all right,” for those moments of doubt. So, that was really important too.
Joette:
But that’s not empty reassuring, I must say. What she was doing was … she was reading the symptoms: where the symptoms were, like, just before taking the homeopathic and where they were shortly after taking them. Because we can learn how to read symptoms and determine, “Is this improving?” Because if it isn’t, we really do have to perhaps go to traditional medicine. Once you have an understanding of this — as she did, and that I’m sure you do now as well — you can read what’s going on … what the body’s telling us.
Kirsten:
Right. And she was seeing the pictures too. So, I think I was just … there were those times where you’re like, “Oh, am I going to do a good enough job to make this work?”
And thankfully, it did work. And I’ve seen it work time and time again. Hyper/Ars is incredible. I’ve seen infections just be able to melt away.
Joette:
Yeah, it’s a Banerji Protocol: Hypericum 200 with Arsenicum 200. And the Banerjis call it Hyper/Ars, and so that’s what we call it in our study. So, yeah … it’s mixed together.
Yeah, it’s pretty amazing for these kinds of conditions. And then you use Pyrogenium, as well … 200, right?
Kirsten:
Correct.
Kirsten: (10:00)
So, that was really when I decided, “Okay, these medicines … they work time and again, and this shouldn’t have healed.” I thought this. Conventionally speaking, everybody thought I was crazy, and this worked.
I know they’ll work. There’s no reason why this should have healed without these medicines. I decided I needed to learn more. And when The Academy became available, I applied. And that’s kind of how this journey started.
Joette:
It starts with a watershed moment for most people. Something happened to their child; something happened to them; something happened to their parent or even their livestock and animal. And that’s when people say, “Wait. Wait a minute. I’ve got to find out more.”
And it’s someone like you, Kirsten, who’s — and this is one of my favorite words — autodidactic, likes to learn on their own. And so that’s how you started. But then you found, as you said, then, the next step is joining a group of people in Gateway to Homeopathy so that you’re with others who think similarly or at least are looking to study in the same fashion.
Kirsten:
And that was really the first thing I did is I did Gateway again, and then I taught it again.
Joette:
Then you taught it!
Kirsten:
Then I taught it. That’s right. And then that was really what I did before starting The Academy.
Joette:
So, you had a good head start.
Kirsten:
Yeah, I was really wanting to learn. It was amazing. I just couldn’t believe … where had these been all my life? I’d done all the things, and why did I not know these?
And so, I felt — and I still feel — I’ve got a limited amount of time. I’m not 20; I’m 50. So, I want to really continue to learn these so I can know them well and help people, my family and my community.
Joette:
Some people say they get angry when they realize, “Wait a minute. I mean, we’re grateful that we’ve got this great medicine. But wait, you mean to tell me that all these years [just like you said], this has not been out there for me to see or to know about or to be able to use? My parents didn’t know … my grandparents. This has been around since the late 1700s. What? We don’t know about this?”
Kirsten:
Right. And then, when you start learning the history behind it and why we don’t know, it makes you even more angry.
Joette:
Yes. Yeah, it’s an interesting history. Medical history is pretty darn interesting.
Joette: (12:21)
So, tell us what else you’ve done. You have another story? We love stories.
Kirsten:
Oh, gosh. Well, I have some really neat ones. Since going through APH and Mastery™, I’ve had a chance to work with some clients and had some really great results.
I think one of the neatest stories and probably one of the most difficult, I have someone close to me that has a daughter that has Type 1 diabetes, asthma, and now has actually been diagnosed with Addison’s disease.
So, that has been difficult, but so rewarding. And I think this is hopeful for people that even if they have to be tied to some sort of pharmaceutical — like, we’re never going to get away from insulin. That’s going to always be in our lives.
And because of that Addison’s disease, we’re going to have to have some measure of steroid replacement. But I will tell you the amount of medication we’ve been able to get away from for this child since helping her has been incredible.
She was diagnosed with celiac; she had chronic constipation, she had eczema. And those are all gone.
For a Type 1 diabetic, to not have food choices is really difficult. And this child could not go anywhere where there was gluten. We couldn’t bring food into the house. She would get sick and throw up.
And she can eat anything she wants now!
So, to have brought that kind of freedom and quality of life to someone is just incredible. So, are we going to still have to be tied to some medication? Yes, but the pharmaceutical needs have gone down drastically. And her quality of life has gone up immensely. Her mom told me that she said, “Mom, what did we do before homeopathy?” That’s really incredible.
Joette:
So, obviously, it’s not just for her. It’s for parents and someday for her own children. And the ripple effect is grand.
Kirsten:
It really is. And her insulin needs have gone down. She is on the smallest dose. They didn’t even know … it’s hard to titrate kids with Addison’s. So, she’s on the lowest dose of steroid that you can even be on. And she’s going through puberty! So, her needs should be going up, but the needs for her pharmaceuticals are not.
So, to say that this has been just really incredible in her life is an understatement.
Joette:
Beautiful. Great story. Love it. And so, what that gives us is a great deal of hope, but it also tells us that we can move a case along. We can move someone along quite far without saying it’s a hundred percent “cure.”
If we can give someone their life back. Someone, let’s say, with rheumatoid arthritis. They might still have deformance of their hands, but they no longer have pain. And now that woman can knit, and now that woman can prepare meals for her and her husband.
And so, those are the kinds of things we know. It will take it as far as it can take it, but meanwhile, the quality of life has been improved greatly. Good story.
Kirsten:
It really has.
Kirsten: (15:48)
Funny you talk about RA. Actually, one of my first cases was a rheumatoid arthritis case. And this person came to me because they were having to switch. They had been on biologics for years, and they were having chronic infections. They really were not feeling well.
I don’t think at the time, necessarily, that she put that with the biologics … you know, understood that maybe that was coming from the biologics. But even the doctor said, “Yeah, it’s going to lower your immune system. It can have these side effects.”
After we talked about it, and I said, “I’ll work with you, whatever you want to do.” But she decided she was going to have to switch medications, and she wanted to get off.
So, I said, “Okay, if that’s what you want to do, and your doctor’s on board, well, let’s just give it a go.” So, we started the protocol, and she has not been back on these medicines since — and it took three months. In three months, she was completely …
Joette:
That’s what I was going to ask.
Kirsten:
Three months. That’s it! I was amazed. I really didn’t know that it would work that fast. She was amazed. I was amazed. Just such a great outcome.
Joette:
So, again, it affects you, your children, your family, her, her family, and then her friends and her neighbors and her church mates, et cetera, et cetera. And it has that effect that that’s how this information needs to get out there … is through word of mouth. And that’s exactly what we’re doing today. It’s another way of getting the word out how important this medicine is in the hands of mothers and grandmothers.
And now, you’re a practitioner.
Kirsten: (17:18)
You know, that was never my intention. I thought I would go into this, and I was just … wanted the information for myself and my family. And then Mastery™ came along. And I thought, “Well, if I’m going to do it, I want to do it well. So, let’s learn how to do it even better.”
And so, I sort of fell into that. People come to you. They know that you’re out there, and they want help, and they say, “Would you be willing to help me?”
And what are you going to do? You’re not going to say no. And really, it is, for lack of a better term, it’s addictive to help people. There’s no feeling like being able to help someone heal when they’ve been suffering for years. It is just a wonderful feeling.
Joette:
That’s kind of our mission being on this earth is to help others. Being part of it; you bet.
Well, Kirsten, I can’t thank you enough. People need to know that you can start from scratch and move all the way into being able to help your family and your friends and then move on to even practice. And that’s, of course, what you’ve done. And this has been over a span of what, how many years would you say …
Kirsten:
Goodness.
Joette:
… when you first met with your friend and who recommended homeopathy …
Kirsten:
Oh, that was 2019.
Joette:
Five years.
Kirsten:
So, it’s not been that long.
No, and I really am just a mom. I never had any intention on going back to school. We’re in the company, as you know, Joette … there are some really sharp cookies in The Academy and in Mastery™, and I’m humbled to just rub shoulders with them. There are some quite, just intelligent practitioners.
I really came into this just as a mom, but it’s amazing what you can learn and what you can do to help someone. And it’s just been a pleasure.
And I tell other students, you just trust the process. Trust the process. It’s a process. You don’t realize what you can accomplish, and anybody can do it.
Joette: (19:13)
Yes, anybody can learn some of the protocols. But when someone is able to put it together in the fashion that you have because you are studious — I have to say that, Kirsten — and you’re myopic about it. You become very intense and have studied. I know! I can see you! I’ve seen you in class through the years, and I can see what kind of person you are. And it takes someone with a certain amount of dedication as well to be able to get to this point.
So, I hope that this has inspired many others because this is doable. It is doable! Anybody can do a few of these, but only certain kind of a person who’s willing to put the effort into it can do as much as I think you’ve accomplished.
So, there you have it.
Kirsten:
Thank you.
Joette:
Yes, you’re welcome. My hope is that we’ve inspired you to have a little more control over your life, my dear listeners, and less anxiety and a whole lot more confidence when it comes to taking care of your family and even moving forward in a new career.
It’s my honor to share many lessons on this simple method of using homeopathy for free —without affiliates or advertising — here in my podcasts, but also my blog posts and Monday Night Lives.

This is the Practical Homeopathy® Podcast, episode number 125, with Joette Calabrese.
Are you concerned about getting sick or your kids going back to school and being exposed to something that makes them sick? Well, let’s examine that today on this podcast. We’re so glad that you joined us. I’m Kate, and I’m here with Joette.
Joette:
Hi, Kate.
Kate:
Hi! I want to start with the basics. Joette. It seems like every year, especially in the fall, people can expect to get a cold. What do you think about that?
Joette:
Well, it’s called a cold for a reason, in my estimation. It’s because, generally, it’s the shift in weather. The weather gets cold, or, even if you’re not in an area where the weather gets cold, there’s a shift — an environmental shift. And it has been commonly understood that if someone gets a chill that they, you know, “Put your hat on, or you’ll catch your death of cold!”
Well, I believe that that can be so. You can get quite sick if you get a chill … especially after you’ve been perspired or children running around in a playground or a park or something. And then they get a chill, And often, that’s what can lead to this.
So, I believe that it does have something to do with the environment. But now, I also believe that it has to do with immunity. Now, when we say “immunity,” I don’t mean immune from bugs necessarily.
I believe it has more to do with the terrain.
Joette: (02:20)
What is the terrain? Well, it’s making sure that there’s strength in that terrain. And the terrain is upon which the person is depending to get through those times when their body might need to make a shift, like releasing toxins, et cetera.
So, let me be more specific. I believe that if germs are ever-present — and that’s the way people see them — then why is it that people only get germy colds and flus at a certain time of the year? Pretty much it’s only in the fall, sometimes in the winter — January, February. (I’m talking about those parts … I’m talking about the U.S., but also in Europe, et cetera.)
When that cold comes — that cold weather comes — and now are the germs more virulent? Do they get excited and start hopping onto people? Or are the germs always there, and those who have a good immune system are able to fend them off?
Joette: (03:22)
Well, if that’s so, then why are we even looking to germs? Why are we not looking to the immune system or the ability to be able to withstand an onslaught of this or that? Why not just count on that to start?
So, the way that I look at it is that if we are taking care of ourselves, we’re eating good food — and I mean real food, food that’s made at home. Doesn’t mean we can’t go out to dinner occasionally, but homemade food where there are no ingredients listed on the package. Because if you’re reading ingredients, it means you’re already buying something that someone else has manufactured, and that is no longer whole. So, whole food — a beef roast put into the oven with carrots and onions and potatoes — and that’s dinner. That’s what I’m talking about. Eggs — well sourced — for example, cooked in butter. Yes, butter.
And so that’s step one.
Step two is making sure that your family and you are getting enough sleep and good rest. Going to bed early; getting out of bed early; sleeping in a room that’s clean with the windows slightly ajar, even in the cold weather (windows should be ajar so that there’s fresh air seeping through); keeping hands clean and the body clean and the home clean. Also, when we can, outside in the sun every day for half an hour — without sunscreen, my friends. We do not want to put chemicals on our bodies.
So, what we want to be doing is treating our bodies with respect and treating our children’s bodies in the same way by following simple measures. Drinking water — pure good water regularly, every hour … a few ounces every hour of good water; exercise, moving — raking the leaves, cleaning out the garage — doing purposeful work combined with exercise is a great way to keep the body moving properly; reading only what’s good; watching only what is pure and lofty; and eschewing those areas of life that are downtrodden and bring us down.
Now we approach the cold season with an immune system — whatever we might want to call it — with an “ability,” (let’s say it that way) for the body to be able to withstand something that might occur.
Joette: (06:00)
Now, I actually believe that a “cold” (air quotes) … that a “cold” is really just a cleansing. It’s a release; it’s an opportunity.
And so, instead of fighting it and being afraid of it and figuring that we’ve got to fight this: “This can’t be! I’m not … I can’t have a cold! My child can’t have a cold!” Just lean into it and take care of yourself or your child’s body.
Go to bed, drink plenty of water again. Often, it’s a great idea to put some Celtic salt in that water because that’s what we perspire … some Celtic salt in that water that’s drunk every hour. Make some good bone stock and drink that and take it easy.
And instead of fighting it, lean into it. It’s an opportunity to cleanse.
And so how do we know that it is even a cleanse? Well, usually the first feeling when someone gets a “cold” (air quotes), they sneeze, or they feel a little scratchy throat (probably because the mucus is releasing down the throat and causing some irritation). And then, they get fatigued.
What does fatigue mean? It means that we need to lay down and sleep.
What does all the release of the mucus mean? It means we blow our nose and replenish it with good quality water, bone stock, et cetera.
And we take it easy and allow this process to happen.
We’ve lived with this bouillon cube — this concentration of ideas, this whole constellation of ideas that getting (air quote) a “cold” is a bad thing and that we must do everything we can to avoid it.
We take drugs; we take synthetic vitamins; we don’t take care of our bodies. We push ourselves through it. We get injections because we’re so afraid it could turn into something like pneumonia.
And it’s an entire constellation of ideas that has been put upon us for a very long time — really a hundred years, approximately, maybe even less than that — that teaches us that there are some really big, ugly bad germs that are out there to get us. And know my friends, it’s just nature.
I use this analogy regarding your garden.
If you look at your garden, and you go out into it, and it looks like the tomato plants are withering, and they’re not robust, do you inject the plant? Do you give the plant pesticides, herbicides, fungicides? Do you start clouding it all up with drugs and chemicals? No. You say, “Hmmm, what could this be?”
Perhaps the plant has not gotten enough water. Or, perhaps the plant was planted in the shade, and it should have been in the sun. Or, perhaps there are other plants around it that are causing trouble, and it needs to be separated. It’s too crowded. It needs more air around it.
We use common sense when it comes to a tomato plant. But when it comes to ourselves, we think we must chemicalized it. We must fight it and pretend it doesn’t exist and push through it instead of leaning into it and allowing ourselves to take life easy for a few days or so.
Kate: (09:40)
I think part of what allows us to lean into that and not worry so much about whatever is the latest thing that’s going around or our kids getting a cold is that we have tools that we can use when that happens … if it’s something that requires a little assistance for the body. And so, can you give us some ideas about how we can be prepared going into what’s commonly known as the cold and flu season in the fall, and how parents cannot worry about that?
Joette:
Well, I love that you said that. Stop worrying! This is natural. We’re supposed to release those things, those — for lack of a better way — toxins from the body. It is intended that we are to cleanse these substances out.
What substances are they? I’m going to tell you. I don’t really know. Are they microorganisms? Perhaps. Are they exposure to chemicals? Perhaps. Whatever it is, let it just happen. Let’s start with that and not become afraid.
Because when it comes to children, the real danger in a child’s life is not a so-called infectious disease. The real danger in a child’s life is, well, number one is, the drugs that are going to be used on the child — put into the child — whatever form that might be. But minus that, the concern that most parents should have is about safety.
And what I mean by that is children are harmed in the house by getting burned or falling from high places or getting cut by accident or getting bitten by a bad dog or something like that.
That is much more dangerous than any regular common “cold” (quote-unquote) or flu or anything like that.
So, can we use homeopathy when something like this comes along? Well, I’ll tell you that there are two schools of thought, and they both rattle around in my head.
One is that I think it’s valuable to just leave the person alone. Let them just sleep off. Give them, as I said, bone stock; plenty of water with a pinch of salt in it; and rest, rest, rest. And just let it be.
On the other hand, if it’s severe enough, and it looks like this is bigger than you bargained for, then we do have homeopathic medicines. One of them is ColdCalm®, made by Boiron. But they’re not the only ones. There are other homeopathic pharmacies that manufacture combination medicines that are really useful.
They also — Boiron — happens to manufacture a product called Oscillococcinum®. “Oscillo” it’s known for, as a shortened version of Oscillococcinum.
Kate:
Named after their dog?
Joette:
Yes. Well, actually, the dog is named after it, but yes. Yeah, Michelle Boiron …
Kate:
Oh, the dog was named after it. The dog was named after the …
Joette:
Yes. Oh, Michelle Boiron, the owner of Boiron. When I interviewed her years ago, she told me that her dog’s name was Oscillo, and that he wore a little blue coat, like the blue bottles.
Kate:
So cute.
Joette:
I know it is funny.
But then we also have Aconitum 200, and if we mix it with Bryonia 30, that can be used. We can use homeopathy, and homeopathy can be efficacious. But we have to start with the underpinnings of an understanding that colds, flus are not generally dangerous. In fact, it’s extremely rare that they are. What they are is a nuisance. That’s all they are. They make us slow down.
But if we lean into that too and recognize that even though it may be a nuisance, it might be one of the best things for us to just calm down, slow down. Maybe the person is doing too much; maybe they’re staying up too late. Maybe they’re not getting sunshine without sunscreen ever. Maybe they’re not moving enough. Maybe the news that they’re indulging in is too negative, et cetera.
So, it is an opportunity to remove what needs to be removed from the body, whether it’s through the sinuses, the throat, the mouth, the ears, the skin — even the skin, yes — the colon.
And let me just say this, parenthetically, that a lot of times, parents say, “Oh my gosh, my child had a cold, and now he’s got a rash.”
Yes! How cool is that? Yes, it’s a release! It’s a great way to get rid of something. Just leave it alone. Don’t put anything on it.
If you use anything that is manufactured by the pharmaceutical industry — and I mean over the counter, anything from a drugstore, et cetera — it will only potentially suppress. And that’s the same for all those cold drugs — other than homeopathic. All of those cold drugs can cause more trouble in the long run than just leaving it alone.
Kate: (14:53)
So, let’s talk a little bit about expectations. Say you’re using homeopathy, and the child is not feeling well, and you want them to feel better. Right? So, you’re giving them some homeopathy, and you expect the cold to just go away after a few doses or maybe a day or two. Is that realistic?
Joette:
Well, let’s go back one step further again.
The attitude of the mother is key. If the mother goes, “Oh, no, look, you’re sick again. Oh, for crying out loud, what are we going to do? This is terrible. And stay away from your brothers! Stay away from your sisters! Don’t let your father get near you!”
That’s a lot different than saying, “Oh, you don’t feel well. Come on over here, honey. Let me hold you. And let’s make some bone stock, and we’ll just lay down here on the sofa, and I’ll put a blanket over you, and maybe we’ll pray together.” How about that idea? “And then you just rest. And don’t worry, it’ll be over in no time.”
That’s a lot different than the first scenario.
Now, I’m not saying that all mothers follow the first scenario, but they may not say it, but they may be thinking it.
And instead of thinking that, instead of worrying, just let it be. And that’s that leaning into it again.
So, having said that, let’s start with that. If you must use a homeopathic medicine, then the expectation might be, “Well, I’ll give it a couple doses. If it doesn’t act, maybe I won’t even bother using it anymore,” which is not a bad thing.
But let me also say that if you expect the homeopathic medicine to act, you have to follow the directions. And on the outside of the box — if it’s, for example, ColdCalm® — you’re going to use it pretty frequently over a period of a couple of days or until there’s a good amount of improvement.
Is this diametrically opposed these two schools of thought? Leave it alone; let it be; lean into it and just know it’s a good thing to release all of this. Or the other side is using homeopathy.
And so, for someone who’s new to this kind of thinking, often they still want to give something. “I got to give something. I got to at least give synthetic vitamin C!” Not juice some oranges, no. “I’ve got to give synthetic vitamin C. I’ve got to give synthetic vitamin D.”
No, what we’re talking about is nothing. Lean into it. And then, if you must use something, then it’s, in my estimation, the best choice is to use homeopathy.
And the expectations might be that it moves very quickly, but it may not.
Kate:
You might just give the body a little boost and help the body to slowly heal.
Joette:
Yes! Yes, but it has to be … you have to follow the directions. You’ve got to give it frequently. In other words, you’ve got to use it … in some situations, you would use a medicine — homeopathic medicine — every 15 minutes for the first hour, and then after that, every few hours. That’s generally the way it’s used, depending on which homeopathic medicine you’re using.
So, what’s the upshot of all of this? That we are intended to live within nature. We are intended to act a certain way. And in our society today, we’ve been trained in this chaotic soup of wrong information to believe that you should not get a cold.
Kate:
Or you should fear … that’s the other thing.
Joette:
Or that you should fear. That’s even worse than getting the cold itself. Fear is really the concern.
Joette: (18:26)
And so, as a mother or a grandmother, our job is to calm. The fear is to look at it and say, “No worries, honey. It’s not a big deal. Let’s just do this. Okay, you do that. Okay, now I’m going into the kitchen, and I’m going to go prepare dinner. If you need me, I’m here. But you’ll be fine.”
Minimize it. Completely minimize it. You would be surprised how quickly a child will get over being sick — or your husband for that matter, or yourself — if you approach it without fear and just know that this is just an opportunity to get rid of what the body needs to get rid of.
Kate:
That’s great information. So where does that leave us, Joette? What can you give us as we walk away from this podcast as a tool?
Joette: (19:18)
Well, I believe that it’s one of the greatest joys that a mother can experience, and that is to learn how to take care of her family without fear. To step into it with strength, with courage, but also with knowledge. Because you can’t do this without undoing all the years of being told that these colds are serious, and we’ve got to get injections, and we’ve got to get this drug and take that drug.
There’s something grand about keeping the calm in the family, and you can feel it from you to them. And then being able to look back and see what you’ve accomplished. You may not notice it the first time, particularly if you’ve had fear in the past. In order to undo that in your family so that they can see you standing firmly in a new way, it may take a couple of times — three, four times — for the family to catch onto the fact that “Mom doesn’t worry anymore, so I guess I don’t need to worry.”
And so, as we age, as we grow into being a mature mother, grandmother that has strength and a strong fulcrum upon which to stand, we remain relevant. So, as we become an older woman, people will look to us and say, “So should I be afraid of this?” I mean, they’re not going to necessarily say it in those terms, but that’s what people will be asking you.
“Do you have a homeopathic medicine that you know to use for this?” “Is it necessary to even use a homeopathic medicine at this point?” So, the young will look to the old, and you will be the old grandma, older, wiser mother that can say, “No, you don’t have to worry about this. I got you on this. I’ve got you covered. Just take it easy. And should you need a homeopathic medicine, then indeed, here it is … and I know which one to use and how to use it.”
Joette:

Kate: (01:30)
Welcome back to the podcast. I’m Kate. Today’s guest is someone I’ve known for years, and I’ll let her tell you more about that. But let’s just say that what she’s accomplished in the past four years has been amazing. I can’t wait for you to hear her story. She will share some dramatic stories using homeopathy and some tips on studying homeopathy. So, with that, everyone meet Susan.
Susan:
Hi Kate. It’s great to get to chat with you today, and I was so happy to get to meet you in November in Florida.
Kate:
Yes, it was great!
Susan:
And it’s amazing how a few years have changed so much for us.
As you said, my name is Susan. And my husband and I have been married for 39 years, and we have three sons and four grandsons. We love to be outside, and we love to go camping and cook our food in the Dutch oven and just take our books and relax.
And my passion had been homeschooling my children. And when they grew up and left home, it was a very good opportunity for me to plunge into studying homeopathy. That has become my passion.
Kate:
Tell me, Susan, how did you first hear about homeopathy? Because I know we connected in a Gateway to Homeopathy study group years ago, and that’s how we first met. But how did that come about?
Susan: (02:43)
Well, like many other people, I had a lot of health problems, and I had a team of doctors working on my conditions, and I was getting some help.
They did the best they could. They offered me a handful of prescriptions, and I said, “No, thank you.”
And my doctor said, “I know. These come with many potential harmful effects.”
So, I had ongoing fatigue and many food intolerances. Anything I ate would upset my stomach. I began listening to medical seminars and searching for answers: why I would have such painful fatigue, one good day and three bad days. So, I was looking into this.
There’s a popular medical doctor talking about the M-T-H-F-R gene and mitochondria and your homocysteine levels. So, I was plunging into that. And at the same time, a good friend said to me, “You know, you should really look at Joette’s blog.” She said, “I’ve been helped with my food intolerances with that.”
And I was really skeptical because I had not had a good report about homeopathy. It seems kind of strange. But for my regard for my friend — and I knew she was a good researcher and her whole family relied on her for medical information — I thought, “Okay, I’ll take a look.”
I was very pleasantly surprised.
Kate:
That’s funny. You were skeptical. You looked, and then you have really exploded from there — from that first interaction with homeopathy, I guess you could say.
Susan:
Yes, Joette was different from anything I had been exposed to homeopathy-wise. She was a no-nonsense approach to health, and that really resonated with me. And I even saw that she had raised and homeschooled three sons in the country, just like me.
I studied Joette’s blog for a year and a half. And I made a spreadsheet to record the remedies and what they were used for. And I put the reference so I could find it later.
I started seeing patterns of “Wow, something like Hepar sulph is used for so many things, I better buy that remedy.”
And I just continued from there.
Kate:
I’m going to interject because all of you listening today don’t know Susan like I do, and Susan is a researcher and extremely detailed-oriented person. She is a hard worker. She studies thoroughly, and she really knows her stuff.
So, I think this is a good suggestion though for people who are wanting to learn more, just to look at the blogs and write down all the information from the blogs.
And we have the Remedy Cards [found at the bottom of most blog posts], right? So, people could print those out.
Susan: (05:03):
Yes, those are wonderful. I have a collection of those, too.
So, I learned that Samuel Hahnemann founded homeopathy over 200 years ago. The French would argue that he rediscovered it. Homeopathic medicines are well-proven. The medicines haven’t changed. The human body hasn’t changed. Medical vocabulary has changed.
We don’t need expensive words. We don’t have to research a homeopathic remedy for mitochondrial dysfunction. Instead, we can look at fatigue. We can say, “What is the remedy for fatigue?” And there are many.
In my case, I used China, and it helped me. And I also studied deeper and layered another remedy that was in that rubric specific for strength alternating with great fatigue.
Kate:
Now what Susan’s talking about there is she’s using a homeopathic repertory. And that helps her to look up symptoms and what medicines might be useful for those symptoms. So, that’s some terminology that she’s using that refers to how you look up symptoms in a homeopathic repertory.
Susan:
Yes. So, I don’t have to worry about my “mitochondria” anymore. It’s not that homeopathy is simplistic, it’s just it’s simpler to use in research what we’re looking for.
Kate:
Okay. So, you started learning about homeopathy at that very basic level and seeing some results. And then what happened next? How did you take that to the next level?
Susan: (06:29)
Well, I had this massive spreadsheet with all kinds of remedies and all kinds of helps, which was fantastic. But I thought there’s something missing. And because I am self-motivated and a self-learner, I put off for a long time taking a Gateway class.
And then this friend that recommended the Joette’s blog to me, I got with her, and I said, “You know, we really need to have a Gateway class.”
So, I led it that summer, and I was really happy that I was exposing many to Gateway information. And I realized, “Wait a minute. I need somebody to challenge me!”
So, that’s when I looked you up and joined in your class. I wanted to have a bigger group, and I wanted to have something that stretched me.
Kate:
And that group has really grown for you over the years because you plugged in, and you became friends with many of those people in the study group. Those friendships have lasted through the years, right?
Susan:
Yes, they have. And I’ve gotten to meet some of them in person!
Kate:
Yeah. So, what happened next?
Susan: (07:25)
Well, one day my husband and I took a deep look at our budget. I calculated how much money was being spent on my hormone therapy and tests. And I suggested to my husband, I said, “I’ve been reading on Joette’s blog, I think I could do this. I think I want to just switch to homeopathy and save the money.”
And so, it was a wonderful change. I felt better using Sepia or Ammonium carbonicum than I had in the ten years of what is called biosynthetic hormone therapy.
Kate:
And where did you find that information?
Susan:
Joette has some blogs called Estrogen Dominance and Other Red Herrings, and the one called Strong Enough for a Woman, and Saving Menopausal Women. Those are the ones that I really studied.
Kate:
And we can put links to those blogs below this podcast on the website too. So that’s joettecalabrese.com, J-O-E-T-T-E-C-A-L-A-B-R-E-S-E.com, and those blogs will be on the website for reference.
Susan: (08:25)
So, that one budget change alone enabled me to buy Joette’s courses and start learning more.
So, I joined study groups to go through those courses. And at that time, I was still having a serious heart arrhythmia. One of the study group friends is a medical professional, and she said, “I think you should study the Kali-s.”
And I thought I went through the material medicas and read through the “Kali” section, which is potassium. I found that Kali carb helped my arrhythmia and many other satellite conditions as well.
Kate:
Awesome. So, when you say I studied the Kali-s, you’re talking about the remedies that the name starts with Kali, like Kali phos, Kali mur, Kali carbonicum. So, there’s a lot of remedies that have Kali as the first name. So, I just wanted to explain that for people who might not know what you meant by “Kali-s.”
So that’s wonderful! That condition resolved for you?
Susan:
Yes.
Kate:
Awesome.
Kate: (09:30)
Can you share some of your other ones? Because I know you’ve had a lot of other things that you’ve done with homeopathy — people that you’ve helped — so, maybe you could share some of those stories with us as well.
Susan:
Sure. So, back in 2021, my husband and I got the severe respiratory illness that everyone was having. And we began dosing a combination medicine that included Eupatorium and Gelsemium.
This hit us so suddenly. Just within a few hours, we were down for the count. But we got three doses of that combination down, and we fell asleep.
We woke up the next morning quite improved. We needed the remedies a few more times. But we were well on the mend, whereas others around us that had gotten sick at the same time continued to get more sick. It was a difficult time for everybody.
About that time, a friend texted me and said, “I’m too sick to come to church today.” And I said, “I’m coming over.”
So, I went over to her house, and I left her some remedies and said, “If you want to try these, see what you think.” And she did, and she improved very quickly.
She had a history of pneumonia, but this time, she didn’t get pneumonia. She’d never used homeopathy before and was immediately interested in “What is this stuff?”
And so, she bought a homeopathic kit, and she enrolled in my Gateway class.
Kate:
Yay! That’s so fun. I mean, it’s great that you saved her from further sickness, and now she wants to know more.
Susan:
That’s right. Now she’s using Symphytum and Arnica for her knees and can’t believe that she can walk so well.
Kate:
Oh, that’s a powerful combination. Yes. What else?
Susan: (11:08)
Last fall, I saw a baby have an amazing turnaround. The older siblings had had a cough and a cold. But this little baby got sick, and he got severe very quickly. The older children had used Aconite and Bryonia and some Ipecac, but he needed more. He had a lot of fever. He had chest congestion, and he stopped nursing.
Kate:
Oh, no.
Susan:
So, the parents had a bag packed ready to go to the ER — which they lived just around the corner from that. So, they were ready, but they called me to say, “Is there anything else we can do?”
Well, I’d heard that Naja [tripudians] had helped many with this type of illness. So, I grabbed my remedies and my toothbrush and headed over there for the night. She already had Naja on hand and had given him some after our call.
When I arrived, the baby couldn’t hold up his head. I put my head to his chest, and I could hear gurgling and rattling inside his chest. He winced when I touched him. He was too weak to cough. The mama gave him another dose of Ipecac and some Naja and added Quebracho.
The baby relaxed and fell asleep.
Kate:
Wow.
Susan:
He woke up about 2 a.m., and he nursed and was breathing more freely. He had firmed up and coughed up some phlegm. His mother gave him more remedies. When he woke up at seven in the morning, he was a much better baby. It was like he had a mild cold now. By that afternoon, he [00:12:30] was sitting on his own, playing with toys.
Kate:
Oh, my gosh! That is incredible!
Susan:
Yeah. We were so happy.
Kate:
Wow. And so that was a really fast turnaround. I mean, the stories that you’ve just said are really dramatic, but I want people to understand that that’s not always that dramatic. Things can take longer to resolve, but I know you have more to share with us. So, I think there’s a story about a spider bite.
Susan: (12:56)
Yes. Some things take longer to resolve.
So, last July, I got a black widow spider bite.
You know, I’ve always admired those spiders. One time, I put one in the freezer to show my grandchildren.
Kate:
Oh, my gosh!
Susan:
You can’t smash ’em, and still look at ’em, you know? But they look so elegant. I mean, after all, what creature can have a big abdomen and still retain her hourglass figure?
So, I had just finished The Academy, and I was ready to celebrate. I had company coming for a few days. And I went out into the garden, and I pressed my shin against the raised garden bed. I got a very painful bite. I looked around for a snake. It was that painful.
I didn’t see anything. So, I went about my work. I went into the house, and I took some Ledum and some Lachesis, but I didn’t really pay it much attention. Life was too exciting at that time.
And then, I developed a headache and some severe abdominal cramps. And I thought, “Well, it’s just because I’m busy doing stuff.” And I dismissed everything. We took a walk with my friends, and both feet felt very swollen and hot, but the leg where the bite was got raw and peeled, and a third of my foot was totally raw. And I remembered having a pebble in my sandal. So, I thought, “Well, that’s probably what it was,” and I just ignored it.
Kate:
Oh, my goodness, Susan! You should never do that.
Susan:
So, I started getting sporadic numbness in my toes, and it went away. And then it came back.
Kate:
Don’t tell me that you dismissed that too.
Susan:
I did. I did. We were having a lot of fun!
Kate:
Oh, my goodness.
Susan:
And then, I got a little numbness the next day in my knee, but it went away.
The next time the numbness came, it was in my thigh. And I thought, “There’s something going on.”
I think I was taking homeopathic remedies for the raw skin on my feet and everything, but I didn’t really put the whole picture together until the twelfth day after the bite. I didn’t have any pain. But when I got out of bed, I couldn’t put weight on that leg. It felt like my bone was broken.
I believe that I was having a bone infection because where the bite was is so close to the bone, and the venom disturbs the central nervous system. It causes very dark, foreboding emotions. This has become an involved case.
So, the allopathic treatment includes an antidepressant and a synthetic anti-venom. I was determined to avoid those if at all possible. I was prepared to put homeopathy to the test. My training in The Academy enabled me to take care of this at home.
Kate:
Wow.
Susan:
I recommend if you want to use homeopathy for a poisonous spider bite, buy the remedies now. You never know when you’re going to need them.
Use The Survivalist Guide. That was where I went to. That’s what I studied. It’s fantastic for all kinds of situations, but don’t ignore your symptoms like I did.
I believe it could have been much more quickly resolved if I had been more aggressive in the beginning with the remedies. But because I was ignoring it, it continued on until it got more complex.
Kate:
So, you just used homeopathic medicines to resolve the infection from the bite. How long did that take?
Susan:
That is correct. From bite to where I had no more symptoms was about two months. But it went through phases, and I would have nerve pain. I would try to walk, and just all of a sudden, my leg would give out. So, I used a number of homeopathic remedies. It was complex. Yes.
Kate:
Oh, my goodness. Well, that was a very challenging case, so it’s pretty incredible.
But I know I don’t want people who are listening to think that if you have an emergency that, you shouldn’t go to the emergency room.
Susan, you made that choice to use homeopathy, but just … we are not saying that you shouldn’t ever go. So, I just want to make that clear, too. Yeah.
Susan:
That’s right. At no time did I feel like my life was a danger, but that’s the choice I made.
Kate: (16:55)
So, I would like to hear a little bit more about your experiences with The Academy and Mastery™, and what you’re doing now because you are in the middle of the Mastery™ program. Tell me about what’s happening in your life around that. You’re just studying, or what’s going on?
Susan:
Oh, I’m having the time of my life. I’m enjoying Mastery™ very much. We have a great study group. We’re learning how to go deeper — how to apply homeopathy to so many things.
My husband is extremely supportive of homeopathy and has encouraged my ongoing studies.
Originally though, this was all just for me and my health. We realized how many people are hurting and need help and are seeking help. And so, I am seeing clients now and really getting to know people. And that’s been a really great blessing in my life to be able to see people be so excited about homeopathy and know that there are choices out there.
Kate:
And actually, you’re very busy. I know that you’re helping a lot of people, so that’s great. I’d like you to share what your husband and his friend talked about, and it was funny. So, can you just share that little story?
Susan:
Okay. Well, my husband has been supportive, as I said, and he also has a great sense of humor. And so, a friend asked him, he said, “Between you and me, does homeopathy really work?”
My husband answered, “Homeopathy accomplishes the purpose for which I take it. Every time I take it, my wife feels better.”
Oh, I can live with that. His better health makes me happy.
Kate:
So, he was making a joke out of it, but he is supportive, and he uses homeopathy and finds the benefits as well.
Susan:
Absolutely. We had a friend here one time that I went to hand my husband the little dosing cup, and he holds his hand out without even looking up to take the medicine. And his friend said, “She’s got you trained like a dog!”
Kate:
Oh, that’s funny. I know people who use homeopathy with their kids. The kids are so trained on how to use the medicine that they just open up their mouths, and the parent just pops the little pellets in their mouth, and it’s like a little bird.
Susan:
One of my grandsons would count the little pellets on his tongue — the teeny tiny ones — and he always got it right.
Kate: (19:18)
Wow. Yeah, they can be pretty small.
So, as we finish up the podcast, I would like you to share any wisdom that you have with the listeners. Since you’ve been on this journey for a while now, and you’ve really come a long way, what would you say to someone who is wanting to go deeper with homeopathy?
Susan:
Well, I always tell everyone to take advantage of the blog. It’s free. It’s loaded with great information.
And organize your notes to have them ready when you need them. You can study a lot, but if you don’t have your notes ready for an emergency, then your knowledge will fail you. So, be prepared for whatever situation you have by having your notes organized.
And if you want to go further, of course, the information and the protocol courses are great. The Gateway is wonderful. You connect with a lot of people. And I highly recommend The Academy and Mastery™ if you would like to go that direction. It is life changing. There’s never a dull lesson with Joette. She is inspiring.
There’s a growing community of homeopaths trained by Joette, and so you can find us all at her APH alumni site [Editor’s Note: now located at FindAPracticalHomeopath.com] to help with those more difficult cases. So, at any level that you want to be at, it’s all there for you.
Kate:
Yes, well said, Susan.! I really appreciate all that you shared today, and you’ve had some great success stories and great tips. So, thank you, Susan, for being here today. I really appreciate you taking the time and sharing all this wonderful information.
Susan:
Thank you, Kate. I am so excited to see the movement growing. Homeopathy is a wonderful way to take charge of our health.

INTRODUCTION
Kate: (01:30)
Hi, and welcome back to the podcast. I’m Kate, and today I want to welcome a couple studying homeopathy together. Yes, you heard me right. It’s a couple! And they have some inspiring stories to share with us about how homeopathy has been, in their words, “Amazing, eye-opening and saved them thousands of dollars each year.”
So, I want to welcome Kris and Gary to the podcast.
Hi!
Kris:
Hi Kate. Glad to be here today.
Gary:
Hi, Kate.
Kate:
Hi. Let’s get started. Gary, I know you wanted to share a little bit of a background about who you guys are, where you live … so, let’s get started with that.
Gary:
So, we’ve been married for 44 years, and we have two grown children who are gainfully employed. Unfortunately, no spouses, no grandkids, but we have granddogs and grandcats, so we’re blessed.
Kris was born and raised in Iowa. I was born and raised in Kansas. Her background … her father was a pharmacist, and her sister and brother-in-law were nurses. Her mom worked in administration in the hospital. After high school, she went to school to become a medical assistant.
Kris:
To work my way through school while I got my physician assistant degree.
Gary:
We met when she came down to Kansas because, in the seventies, out-of-state tuition in Kansas was cheaper than in-state tuition in Iowa.
I’m a retired engineer. Kris is a retired PA (physician’s assistant). When she started taking homeopathy about two years ago … my background is in physical sciences, so I’ve taken chemistry, physics, that kind of stuff.
When she started talking about potentization, it blew my mind because my chemistry was always if you diluted something, it weakened it. And so, let’s just say I was highly skeptical of the whole thing.
Kate:
You’re very analytical, I’m sure.
Gary:
Yes.
Kate:
Yes.
Okay. So, Kris, you have this analytica,l skeptical husband, and I’m sure from your background too, you really had to think about this closely. But why don’t you give me — from your take — how did your journey to homeopathy look?
Kris (03:55):
Okay, a little over 10 years ago, our nieces were researching alternative medicines and treatments for their father who had multiple sclerosis. So then, essential oils came into all of our lives, and we saw it do miraculous things for all of our health. And it even helped heal some skin cancers in her father-in-law.
Then one of the nieces joined what I call a “crunchy” Facebook group. She lived in a very large metropolitan area, and these people were women always searching for the safest product and the best product for their families. And their researching skills were just unbelievably superb.
And through that, I found out about homeopathy. And one of the people in that crunchy group was Dr. Kristi Corder, who is now a graduate of Joette’s Academy [of Practical Homeopathy®] and Mastery™.
And I took my first two Gateway I and II courses with her, and that was back in ‘22. And since then, I have taken five other protocol courses. I have bought just about all of them, and so it’s just a matter of time until I can go through the next three that haven’t been opened up or really used yet.
Kate:
So, where was Gary when you were doing all of this? Was he involved in studying or were you doing this on your own?
Kris:
I was studying on my own and then, with one of my nieces. She did not pursue more courses because of her life thing right now. But as they had emergencies or we had emergencies, we would consult each other, and we would work through things together.
It’s amazing what a foundation that Gateway I and Gateway II give you … and learning about the cell salts, also. They’re just amazing healing remedies without a doubt. To this day we still do that, and some of the success stories come from our family escapades and our pets.
Gary (5:53):
While she was doing all the studying, I was pretty much sitting on the couch watching my sports stuff. So, I’m supportive of her continuing her learning. It’s great that she wants to do this, but like I say, I really didn’t have a lot that I wanted to do with homeopathy. It was kind of interesting that we’re in a small group, and one of our members has a lot of allergies, and Kris was always telling him …
Kris:
There’s homeopathy for that.
Gary:
There’s homeopathy for that.
Kris:
Yes. Didn’t push anything more but just left it at that. You know? And, after a year and a half of that, he started talking to me seriously about it. And then he had a health scare and so really got into homeopathy and sought out homeopathic advice, also. That has been a great learning experience for all of us as he’s gone through his journey.
Gary:
When our friend had a prostate biopsy, Kris was volunteering, called me up at home and said, “You need to get over to our friend’s house and make sure that he has these remedies.”
He was on a pain scale of 10 — he was at or above 10 — after this prostate biopsy. That was two years ago when the opioid — the Purdue Pharma — was a big thing, and doctors would not prescribe opioids at all. They sent him home and said, “Take some Tylenol.”
So, we had talked to our friend, and he had started purchasing remedies. So, when I went over I made sure that he had Arnica and Hypericum and was taking those. And within 45 minutes, his pain level was back down to a three or a four. And it was after that that he started doing research.
He found Bob Dunbar and his “No Girls Allowed” Gateway I and Gateway II.
Kate:
No girls allowed! Yeah. So, Bob — for those of you listening who don’t know — Bob leads some all-men study groups.
Gary:
Our friend took Gateway I and II from Bob. So, then we would go to small group, and he would sit with Kris, and they would talk over remedies and protocols and how he could further do things to get rid of his allergy problems.
Gary (8:18):
After several months of that, it was kind of like, “Maybe I ought to start taking some of this stuff just so I understand what’s going on.” And so, our friend hooked me up with Bob, and I’ve been through Gateway I and II with Bob now twice. So that’s where I got into it.
One of the great things about having purchased all of the protocol courses is we found out that as Kris’s spouse, I could also take those courses! And then, Kris decided to retake the Survivalist course.
Joette recommends taking the protocol courses three or four times in order to get all of the benefit out of those. So, I decided it was time for me to go ahead and jump in and start learning. And so, we have been studying together since.
Kate:
And how long has that been?
Gary:
We started in the Survivalist … was March?
Kris:
For this year. That takes two months to go through.
Gary:
And we’re in the middle of — well, almost the end of — Detox right now. And so, I’m looking forward to many more.
Kate:
Yes. You have a lot to do to catch up to Kris.
Gary:
I do.
Kate (09:32):
Well, I bet this has been really interesting doing this together. When we were talking earlier, you said that it’s really brought a new aspect to your marriage. Can you talk a little bit about that?
Gary:
The story I shared is that we went down to visit a niece — had about a six-hour, eight-hour drive. And I was in the middle of my Gateway course, and so, I was trying to study for that. But when I was driving, Kris would read to me the course material. Or when she was driving, I would go ahead and read it. And then she would quiz me: “What would you give in this case? What strength, how often?” So, it was a good learning experience. It’s a good way to learn.
Kris:
It makes a long car trip go faster.
Kate:
I bet. That’s great.
Alright, I think it’s time to hear some of your success stories because what you shared with me is really amazing … some of the things that you guys have been able to do with homeopathy.
So, why don’t you give us a sample of some of the things that you’ve seen as you’ve used homeopathy?
Kris (10:43):
In my very first Gateway course, one of the families had their two-and-a-half-year-old get a broken leg just below the growth plate below the knee, and it went crosswise. So, they had to be non-weightbearing the first two weeks
The mom was studying. This was her first time in Gateway I, also. And so, she gave Symphytum from that first day. When they went back for the two-week checkup, the doctor said things looked good. And she asked if they could do an X-ray just to see how well things had healed — because of the non-weightbearing and holding a toddler down is not very easy to do.
The X-ray showed the fracture was totally healed. It didn’t show any bony callus, which you usually see in the process of a fracture. Everything was healed like it hadn’t happened. And she shared the pictures that she took of those X-rays.
It was just mind-blowing for me, as being a physician assistant and having helped people with fractures and stuff in the past. So, that was our first real big example of how much it can do.
Kris (11:47):
Another one was a family member was sledding on an icy conditions and took a bad hit to the head. And where they were sledding, they were 25 minutes from an emergency room on good roads, but they were totally iced in.
But they had homeopathy!
They gave Arnica within that first two minutes after the injury. Our friend was eight years old at the time, but he already knew how to rank pain. And so, he said it was an 8 out of a 10. And Mom noticed that his pupils were not reacting to light — to constrict and dilate as they should.
So, she continued giving the Arnica frequently. At the 30-minute mark, the pain was down to a 3. And 45 minutes later, the pupils were now reactive to light as they should be. And in three hours, the goose egg from where he hit couldn’t be felt. It didn’t even have any sponginess left behind, which I had never seen anything heal like that in Western medicine. That was very measurable in first person.
Kate:
I’ve seen that happen from people who are skiing, too, and giving Arnica and Aconite. Oh, my goodness. It is incredible!
Kris:
They gave Aconite, too, back in the beginning. You must do that when it’s a shock or injury thing.
Kate:
Yes, my kids are ever out skiing, I’m always giving them the Arnica and Aconite to put in their ski jackets.
Kris (13:12):
Right. Our next biggie was last October. Friend’s mother-in-law called them to say, “Come over, I’ve had my AFib,” (which is atrial fibrillation, which means the heart is not beating correctly) had happened during the night. She didn’t want to bother anybody. She had a horrible headache. And they got there, and all of a sudden, her speech went garbled.
So, they knew she was probably having TIA or going into stroke. So, they gave Arnica once again and very frequently.
Got to the emergency room. Having called ahead, they did a CT scan and an MRI. So, they had medical proof where the TIA started. It did not progress into a stroke, and the doctors couldn’t explain it. But the family could, knowing the homeopathy, but they didn’t share that because a lot of medical facilities poo-poo homeopathy and don’t believe it’s for real. And she has since done well, and she has not had any stroke after. It’s continued very well.
Kris (14:12):
That trip we were talking about when I was reading the Gateway II book: While I was driving, all of a sudden, my left calf swelled and started hurting very painfully. And I’d had blood clots in a calf 20 years ago, so I knew that’s probably what it was because we’d been driving so much.
So, I started taking Arnica after I pulled over, made Gary drive. And then I had the seat reclined, so, I had my foot up on the dash. And then I am doing massage therapy on my leg — which we had just visited one of my nieces who’s in that school, and she had just shown me how to do it the night before.
It’s a God thing! It truly is.
And by the time I got home, my calf was down by half. And the next morning it was normal, and it did not progress or get any worse.
Kate:
Wow, that’s great!
Kris:
And then on the protocols, I use several for my rheumatoid arthritis.
Macular degeneration, which is a change in my eyes. (It happens on the retina. It comes from our family’s side.)
For my cataracts.
For type two diabetes. (It helps keep sugars in control, and so I don’t have to be on insulin.)
Kris (15:18):
For our pets: We have two dogs that are very seniors. One has extreme separation anxiety and fears of loud noises, thunderstorms and fireworks. So, we have gone through many remedies and combinations to find what keeps him comfortable and not panicked for that.
And for our aging cocker spaniel. She has Cushing’s disease, which is an adrenal problem. And so, we buy a homeopathy mix that works better than what regular vet medicine did.
Kate:
And you found some of these protocols on the blogs of Joette’s?
Kris:
Yes. Thank you.
Oh, the other thing for Annabel: She was pretty much deaf. And then from the Buster blog from his birthday about how Joette had given him Arnica in his water for several conditions — which had helped his heart, a tumor to shrink, as well as his hearing came back. He’d only been able to hear high pitch squeaks before.
And with Annabel, that was the same thing. She only heard very, very loud noises or high pitch. Unfortunately, she’s gone totally deaf since then, but we got a couple more years where she could hear us before that happened.
For my cataracts — that comes also from one of Joette’s blogs!
And going on for the fear of fireworks, noise and stuff, if you have military veterans in your family, it helps the PTSD that they have as well. It can take the edge off. Unfortunately, our town has three days straight of allowing fireworks just about almost 24 hours a day. It is never a pleasant time.
Kate:
Wow. Well, that blog, I think, would be helpful. And I believe it’s “Flynn and the Not-So-Fun Fireworks.”
Kris:
Yes, and it also had two other hyperlinks in it that helped you find some other things, too.
Kate:
Yes. We’ll put those links below [above, preceding the transcript] for those of you listening. So, if you’re driving in the car, when you get to a place where you can look at the website, those links will be listed on the website right below the podcast.
Kris:
The other thing for homeopathy, it helps our niece with their hobby cattle. They are just starting into having calves again this year. And one of the cows had mastitis and very engorged. And so, Phytolacca — they used as a spray on the sac as well as on her nose. Within 24 hours, the calf was able to nurse on all four teats, which only two out of the four had been available because she was so firm.
And then for eye infections for ticks: If you have dogs that are out in the brush or in the woods with you and that sort of thing, Ledum is great for tick bites and to prevent getting Lyme disease. Also, on the blogs that Joette has about Lyme disease and ticks and those kinds of bites.
I think the neatest one was their family cat had been attacked by some critter at night. They’re not sure what it was, but it caused damage in her abdomen. So, she had to go to a vet to have surgery, and then they were fighting infection and using homeopathy. And with that, they are able to have her heal from a really bad abscess within 7 to 10 days — that was using Bellis perennis and Staphysagria.
Gary:
One of the things that I have found amazing is that Kris has been able to get into these different groups of people using homeopathy, like the farm group.
Kris (18:50):
This is through Michele, who is one of our leaders. And so, she has Signal chat groups for people who have taken her courses. And then we become like detectives or support groups, depending on if it’s a crisis or just a chronic problem that you can’t get a good solution going.
We cover three or four time zones, so there’s usually somebody on if a crisis comes up, and you can get answers. And they can help with research if you’re someplace where you can’t do that.
And we do that a lot, and that has just been such a blessing also. So, you have like 150 new friends!
Kate:
Yeah, I’m glad you brought that up, Gary and Kris, because that is one of the things that people say is the biggest benefits from joining a study group: Is that, you’re right, you have this now community of people that you help each other! You’re a resource. You’re there for each other. And so, that alone, I think, is so valuable.
Kris:
And if somebody needs a special remedy, and it’s going to be two to four days too late for getting it, we put it out geographically. Who knows who-has-what, and can we get it there? And we can usually get it there in less than two days to whoever needs whatever.
Kate:
Wonderful.
Kris (20:07):
I do have one more really great success story.
Kate:
Yes, please.
Kris:
This was a year ago May, and it was the farm group in the Survivalist Guide group that Michele has. And it was a story of a family whose dog became deathly ill. And they aren’t really sure to this day what the cause was, but it was so bad that they had two different vet offices say they had done everything possible. There wasn’t anything they could do.
The dog was suffering, and the best course would be to put her down. And the mom and one sibling were there, and they knew they had to take her home so everybody could say goodbye to Willow.
And so, they left against medical advice, and that vet office gave ’em a really bad time about it. And they got home. And so, mom, who was the homeopathy person, got on the grapevine here and put it out there.
And I don’t think it was five minutes, and we had 10 people research all symptoms repertorizing, which means pretty much for us using Robin Murphy’s repertory book, which you put in symptoms and then that gets you choices of the homeopathy medicines that are best for what you’re dealing with.
And so, this went on for 36 hours. We were tag-teaming the family as they were going through this crisis. And the next day, midday, Willow was able to lift her head and take some drinks of water. This is the dog that they even called at five o’clock the day before saying, “I’ll send a vet out to put her down. You can’t let her suffer like this.”
Monday night, she was able to stand up. By Wednesday, she was walking outside. The end of the week, she was running and being just about her same self.
That is the miracle of homeopathy!
Kate:
Wow!
Kris:
… and the medications used.
Kate:
What was the condition that she had?
Kris:
I don’t remember now. What caused it? I’m thinking it was a vaccine-type reaction, kind of nausea, vomiting, couldn’t keep anything down, couldn’t drink, totally lethargic, no energy, just laid there. And she was a big dog, like 70 to 80 pounds.
We just all rejoiced with them … just seeing the turnaround. It was beautiful.
Gary:
At the end of the week, the owner posted a video on the group showing the dogs playing in the backyard together.
Kate:
Sweet.
Kris:
That they wanted to put down the week before!
Kate (22:42):
Wow. You’ve shared some really powerful stories. Thank you so much for just enlightening those who are listening to what homeopathy can do.
Now we know this takes a lot of work, and it takes a team of people. And like you said, you guys did this together! It’s hard to be isolated and do this alone.
So, I think you guys are a great example about what you can accomplish from joining a group and being plugged in and connected and working together. So, I really appreciate you guys’ sharing.
Kris:
Well, thank you. And this is the blessing of … Gary said, “Whatever you want to do; I don’t care what it costs.”
It’s okay as I’m buying on group buys to get 35% discounts on the courses, but it still is a chunk of change for a lot of people’s budgets … and then building up our supply of remedies to have for just in case.
When I started all this, this was just after the bad California Palisades fires. And then it was the train derailments in the Ohio Valley and all of that contamination that went up from that.
And so, this just really was my push, I guess, to be ready just in case.
Gary:
So, one thing that I remembered: One of the best things about being in one of the Signal chat groups or the Telegram groups like Bob has, is, as a beginner, not only are you learning about the remedies, but the question is always, “What potency and what frequency?”
So, especially for beginners to get into a group and be able to put out there, “Hey, I’ve got this going on. I think I need to use this remedy, but what potency and what frequency should I use?” Usually, you can get somebody that’s more experienced that can give you an answer.
Kate:
And that’s why, too, the protocols are helpful.
So, if you have a protocol, which means it does give you the remedy, the potency and the frequency, then that’s so helpful.
But if you don’t have that, you’re right. Having others who have that experience can be very helpful.
So, as we wrap up today, I just want to find out if there’s anything else that you guys would like to share for those people who are listening. Maybe they have just started to learn about homeopathy or have been studying for a little while. What advice or thoughts do you have for those people?
Kris (25:24):
You’ve made a great choice. You’ll never be sorry you did. It will empower you. It will save you hours in the urgent care and ERs waiting for help if you can take care of a lot of this on your own at home. If you have littles at home, if you have teething and booboos and that sort of thing, you will have everything at your fingertips to take care of all of that.
Gary:
It’s just eye-opening to learn that homeopathy is used worldwide except in the U.S. And I know that it’s becoming more popular in the U.S. I can’t wait to see it expand.
Kris:
It’s been very exciting for me to see that homeopathy products are now showing up on television commercials in the commercial break times. And it’s not just late at night, it’s in prime time.
Kate:
Yeah, that’s pretty great. I can’t wait to see homeopathy spread as well. And I know that’s Joette’s heart is to see homeopathy in every household.
So, I appreciate you guys and what you’re doing, and how you’re sharing homeopathy and how you shared with us your stories of encouragement. So, thanks for being here today.
Kris:
Thanks, Kate.
Gary:
Thanks, Kate.

Kate: (01:30)
Hi everyone. Welcome back to the podcast. We love our community and are so thankful you’ve joined us today.
I’m here with Joette, and she’s going to share some simple but important health tips that you are going to use to learn how to become a detective and connect the dots and discover clues that will help guide you to the right homeopathic medicines.
But first things first. Sometimes, we forget to begin with the simple things, the things that are right in front of us. Maybe it’s not even homeopathy!
You all know we get excited when we learn homeopathy, and we can have a tendency to just jump right to homeopathy, But we really should consider some of the basics.
We were talking about this the other day, Joette, and you had some really good ideas toward that end.
Joette:
Hi, Kate.
Well, these are not unusual ideas. They’re more gentle reminders. Good health is a daily practice. And instead of thinking of it as, “I’m doing this for my health,” just make it part of your … if not daily, at least a number of times per week for some of these things.
So, some of them are so simple that it’s going to seem kind of strange that we even mention it.
Joette: (2:51)
And one of them is just walking — making sure you’re getting some exercise in. And if you can walk barefoot. Walk barefoot in your garden, walk barefoot in the park if you can take the shoes off.
A lot of shoes, I hate to say it, are made in China. And we don’t know what the ingredients are in the inside of those shoes. And do we want to absorb something in the bottom of our feet? Especially where we are supposed to be releasing those elements or toxins, for example, out of the bottom of our feet. Do we want that to be touching some kind of a plastic or a formaldehyde or something like that?
So, walking barefoot … walking barefoot, even around the house.
Kate:
I might add Joette that we have to be careful — or cognizant — of the possibility that pesticides were sprayed where we are walking. So, we don’t want to take that …
Joette:
No doubt about that. No doubt, obviously. I think it’s obvious. Yes, yes, of course.
So, that means if we’re going to walk around in the garden barefoot, why not do some gardening? It’s great exercise. It is an activity, a hobby, a way of living that really doesn’t have to be big. It could just be a couple herbs. Could be bigger than that … could be much bigger than that. You could really make it into something that’s a real avocation. But gardening is a great idea.
Joette: (04:16)
And then that also leads to getting out in the sun. And I mean without sunscreen!
Anything we put on our skin is absorbed … instantly! The first time I ever realized that was when my son — my oldest son — got a fever. I didn’t know anything about homeopathy, or I knew very little about it.
But I did know about herbs, and I knew that garlic was a good idea to use for inflammations and et cetera. So, I would get garlic and mash it up and mix it with olive oil and put it on the bottom of his feet.
Well, one time, I did exactly that. I had a rag under his feet while he was laying in bed with his fever. And I put garlic and olive oil and rubbed it on the bottom of his feet and said, “Now hold still … don’t move while I run and wash my hands. And I’ll go get a pair of socks and put the socks on your feet. And then we’ll wrap ’em up, and you can get to sleep.”
Well, I went into the bathroom, and he lay there waiting for me … and how long could it take to wash your hands? 30 seconds? And then I went and got the socks. Another minute? Put the socks on his feet, covered up his feet and covered him all up and got him ready to fall asleep in bed.
And when I did that, I kissed him, and his breath smelled of garlic.
That was five minutes, maybe 10 minutes! The garlic was absorbed by his skin and showed up on his breath within minutes. So, that means it went through his entire system … or a certain amount of his system.
So, what happens when we put sunscreen on? Something that is toxic in sunscreen. There are a lot of “questionable” ingredients, shall we say, in sunscreen. And so, if we put it on our skin, just expect your body has to process it.
And so, a better way to do it, in my estimation, is to not wear sunscreen and wear protective clothing. Wear a brimmed hat, get under an umbrella and just be prudent if you are prone to getting sunburn.
Joette: (06:23)
Also, another thing is to get up early in the morning. And the only way to get up early in the morning — with the natural light that comes up in the morning with the birds chirping — is to go to bed at a reasonable hour.
So those kinds of concepts, which is what our ancestors used to follow … They, of course, got up first thing in the morning because that’s when the light came out! They didn’t have electricity to get their day started, so they got up with the light and went to bed with the light going down. So, I think that kind of timing is very valuable.
Joette: (07:00)
I also believe it’s important to make family meals and make them from scratch daily — not occasionally, not just Sundays, but every day — even if it’s simple. Scrambled eggs.
Boiled eggs for dinner is not a bad meal. With some good quality bacon or some homemade sausage or a lamb burger or a beef patty. That’s a great meal! It’s not expensive, and it’s not time-consuming. It doesn’t even take much to clean up after it.
So, I think a family meal, where everybody is seated before we begin eating. We say our prayer of thanks and then begin our meals. Then conversation begins.
I think that the kitchen is the best room in the entire house. And so, when they say women belong in the kitchen, I don’t disagree with that. That makes a lot of sense to me. It’s the most fun room. It’s where all the good stuff happens. It’s where the creativity happens. It’s where the conversations occur. It’s where we train up our children, where we bring our extended family in and our guests.
So, making meals every night and making the kitchen an important place, I think is very powerful on a day-to-day basis.
Joette: (08:20)
And since we’re talking about the kitchen, there’s so much information these days now about seed oils — all the oils that we used to think … And I used to actually use canola oil, my friends, back in the eighties when it first came out, not realizing that its real name was rapeseed oil.
And then they changed it to a lovely name, “canola” oil. And I used a lot of it back in the eighties.
And now we have to be very careful. Pre-made salad dressings have seed oils. So, we always want to make our own salad dressing with truly organic, extra virgin, cold-pressed olive oil or no oil at all. Simply put lemon juice on your salad and maybe sprinkle some cheese on it.
So, we want to stay away from those bad oils. Either substitute the real oils or have none at all.
Joette: (09:16)
So, those are my … Oh, one more! One more. Especially at my age, I notice people — not only myself and my husband — but I notice people around me who are close in my age do not drink enough water. And I’ve never been one to promote drinking a gallon of water a day. I think it can be overdone. It also depends on your weight and size, and everybody has these rules.
But I must admit that if I don’t drink a certain amount of water every day, I do see a change in my well-being and also in my husband and, of course, my clients and students. They report on a regular basis.
So, if we drink a full glass — a six or an eight-ounce glass of water at one sitting — it’s going to drive people to the bathroom every hour or so. But if we make it a smaller amount, say, I don’t know, three or four ounces of water every hour or so? A friend of mine, Leanne, suggested that. I really like that idea.
Or when someone goes to the bathroom after urinating, that should be replenished immediately. So, every time one’s in the bathroom, the next thing they do should be to wash their hands, and then leave from there and go and drink their water.
So, I think those are those little simple things. There are a lot more, of course, I could add all kinds of things to this. Stay away from media and read your Bible, pray, et cetera. That also is extremely important in keeping your life in order.
These kinds of things help us establish our day. Especially, when you start in the morning with them, it carries you through the day. And then at night, a little finish to that. And then establishing your day the next day, walking barefoot, drinking water, working in the garden, getting in the sun, getting up early, et cetera, et cetera.
Kate: (11:10)
Joette, there’s one other thing I would love for you to touch on, and that is caffeine. Sometimes, we don’t think that it might be affecting anything, but it really can mess with things.
Joette:
Yeah. I drink coffee. I drink a cup, generally, per day, and it’s organic. And I know that I should not drink any more than that, but I have to say that many people report to me, especially as they get into their fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, that they’re not sleeping so well. And I ask if they’re drinking coffee, if they’re eating chocolate, if they’re drinking colas, et cetera.
This is what I hear often: “Oh yeah, I drink coffee. But I only have a cup, and it’s in the morning.” So, they’re assuming that by nighttime, the caffeine should be gone. It should not affect them any longer.
And I have to disagree. I find that as we age, we often become more sensitive to stimulants. And so that one little piece of chocolate that you’ve been able to get away with for all these years (every day after lunch) or that one cup of coffee in the morning can indeed influence how we sleep that night. Can also influence anxiety.
So, I’m not saying you should cut out coffee. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have that chocolate but do consider tha. Just because it’s in the morning doesn’t mean that it won’t affect you 20 hours later because indeed it can. I see it far too often.
Now, what I love about this — and here’s an opportunity to bring homeopathy into the picture — do consider that, and then if, indeed, you find that, let’s say, by skipping coffee for a few days — not just one day because substances remain in the body for much longer than we realize … If you stop coffee and you find that your sleep is a little bit more restored, but you just have to have that coffee — you just really want to have that cup of coffee (or tea, by the way, or chocolate or cola, whatever it might be) then we can use Coffea. Homeopathic Coffea — Coffea 200, Coffea 30. I like 200.
Joette: (13:12)
And especially if someone finds that they’re able to fall asleep, but that they wake. And then they might fall asleep and then they wake up again. That is a very strong indicator that it could be the coffee or the tea or the chocolate, et cetera, that’s stimulating that central nervous system to not ever be able to fully relax.
And this often … by taking Coffea 200 — once, before bed — it can often restore sleep so that we don’t have to think about it any longer. And sometimes it just takes a couple doses. One dose one night, then next night. And then, often, we see that sometimes that can turn it around.
And then, perhaps, it might be needed a month later or whatever, then we use it again. So, it’s nice to know that you’ve got something homeopathic that you can use as well.
Kate:
I remember one time when I was having some heart palpitations, and you asked me if I’d been consuming caffeine. And I may or may not have been eating some chocolate . And you suggested that I stay away from it for a while, and it did indeed help, and the heart palpitations went away. So, that’s another thing to consider.
Joette:
Oh, yeah. Palpitations or racing heart or feeling stepped up. And we don’t necessarily associate it with something that we’ve eaten because, “Well, I’ve eaten that for years. Why would it happen now?”
Well, our bodies change, and it often happens around menopause for women. So, that’s a huge time of change. So, of course, we’re going to see some shifts, and we have to reassess our lifestyles, especially around that time.
Kate: (14:49)
So, sometimes, Joette, it’s not as simple as what we’ve just been discussing, and we really do need to figure out the correct homeopathic medicine. So, I would love for you to talk to us about connecting the dots and what we might do to help lead us to the most appropriate medicine.
Joette:
Sure. Sometimes, it’s as easy as “I can’t sleep.” Regardless of what the etiology is. Regardless of whether or not we figured out that it was coffee or chocolate or whatever. And “I wake up frequently, and I know that Coffea 200C is the medicine for that.” And we just simply go with it. It can often work with just that simple bit of information.
Other times, however, we need to connect the dots, just like what I’ve just done in terms of, well, “What are you eating? What could be stimulating?”
Just because you’ve had it before doesn’t mean that … You’ve been able to have it before doesn’t mean that you can have it now or to the same degree. So, sometimes, we have to connect the dots.
And so — I always use this example — my dog Buster, who’s no longer around, was a master at DOT connecting. He knew that if I went into the kitchen, he might get something to eat. He automatically knew it. He knew by my behavior that he could follow through with his own behavior.
And if we opened the front door, it might mean he’d get to go outside. Or if we took him — and actually, I don’t remember ever taking Buster to the vet, now that I think of it — but other dogs, if you take them to the vet that they would … as they walked in, they knew instantly what was going on. They would connect … The dogs do that. They know what’s going on, and they get frightened.
That’s what we want to do. We want to bring back our simple understanding of what has happened, connecting to what is happening or what potentially will happen.
So, there are times when people say to me, “I’ve never been well since that time when I had pneumonia. My lungs are just not the same. I don’t have the energy, et cetera.” And, indeed, that can happen that someone is not well ever since they had say a lung infection, pneumonia, et cetera.
But I want you also to think about what else was part of that pneumonia. Were you given antibiotics? Were you given steroids? So, are we connecting the dots with ever since pneumonia or are we connecting the dots with ever since antibiotics for two weeks on a daily basis and steroids for five days around pneumonia?
So. what is the exciting cause? And so, I want you always to be thinking of what could be exciting, causing … what’s the etiology of this particular condition or suffering I have.
And now, I’m mostly talking about chronic conditions, not acutes. But I have to say, “What could be causing this condition?” is a good question to ask. Is it possible that the reason that I have this condition is something that I did previously, such as: “Is it possible that the drug I’m taking now for blood pressure could be causing this kidney pain?”
And the way that we find that out is to not look at what are the side effects of the drug, but rather you go online and you look up the name of the drug that’s being taken and say, “Does this particular drug cause this symptom?” What symptom? The symptoms you’re experiencing.
A lot of times, the insert won’t include the side effects — all the side effects — because they’re unknown at the time of that printing. Sometimes, it takes a year after a drug has been put to the market. Sometimes, it takes five years or 10 years.
So, what you’re looking for is what others have reported. Does this cause that?
Now, once you know that, are we going to treat the sufferings caused potentially — often likely caused — by the drug that’s being taken with a homeopathic medicine? Well, sometimes we may have to do that. But for the most part, we’re looking for how can we find another way to treat the condition that the drug is being used for in order to suppress the symptoms?
Now, don’t get me wrong. I do not urge anyone to step off of their drugs, particularly for blood pressure. There is a boomerang effect that could be quite serious. I am not a medical doctor. I can’t tell people to get off of their drugs.
But it would behoove us to know why this is happening. Because once you step off of the idea that there are no side effects for that drug, or “I don’t see them written here,” or “I’ve asked my doctor, and he or she says, ‘No, that’s not a side effect.’”
I’m afraid most doctors simply don’t have the time to read up on all the side effects, and there are often hundreds. And you might want to get that insert out and get your magnifying glass and look at all of the side effects. And then I would talk to the pharmacist because the pharmacist knows the drugs better than most medical doctors.
So, you want to know what’s causing this. Because if the drug is superfluous, such as … I’ll give you a perfect example.
Statin drugs — and I’m not alone in this. Statin drugs have been eliminated from the market in certain countries in Europe. So, if someone is taking a statin drug and within months or a year or three years — depends on the person — they have pain in their calves, and they can no longer walk, and now it’s so painful, they can barely sleep. If it continues, now they’re wheelchair-bound, and there was nothing like that before the onset of using that drug. We might want to know that, indeed, statin drugs caused that in many people. That’s important to know.
It is important that we know what’s causing what. Because there’s a lot of information out there: Research data that shows that statin drugs are, at best, superfluous and, at worst, problematic and can cause conditions. So, let’s find out. Let’s be curious. Stay curious. Keep digging. Keep looking. What could be happening here?
Kate: (21:50)
And along with that curiosity, you often suggest writing out a timeline. You have your clients do that. So, can you explain that just a little bit more?
Joette:
Yes. I urge people to get a nice sharp pencil with a good eraser. And there’s a reason for that. Because as you lay out the timeline of your life going backwards in time, you’re going to find that, “Oh my gosh, I forgot to add this drug in. Oh, you know what? I forgot. Yeah, I took the birth control pill for six years. Oh yeah, I forgot to add this in.” And you’re going to have to erase and change and lay it all out.
Lay out everything if it’s important. I mean, this doesn’t have to be … not everyone needs to do this. But if it’s important to you to know what could have caused this and, “Why am I in such bad shape chronically,” then it might be valuable to look back and see what happened.
“Oh! Pneumonia 10 years ago. Never been well since then.”
What happened after pneumonia? The treatment.
What was the treatment? Antibiotics and steroids.
What do antibiotics and steroids cause? Food intolerances, anxiety, fatigue — not uncommon, not at all uncommon — frequent colds, frequent ear infections, et cetera, et cetera.
So, it’s important to note that it’s not your body necessarily that’s causing all the trouble, but rather the extrinsic substances — those things that are coming from the outside that we’ve agreed to use, that we’ve agreed to take.
“Oh, thank you. Oh wow, that got rid of the pneumonia.” But meanwhile, now it’s caused a new condition that’s longer lasting than what pneumonia may have lasted, and a new condition that could be potentially even more sobering.
Now, I also don’t want you to get the idea that I think we should never use drugs. But boy, do believe they’re grossly, grossly overused, and they’re much too cavalierly handed out.
So, we have to think for ourselves. We cannot expect an industry to be looking out for us —a pharmaceutical, a medical, an insurance industry. They’re not there for us. They’re there for them. So, whatever they will gain by being there and convincing X-number of percentage of the population to use this or that, that’s to their advantage. It may indeed not be to ours.
So, it’s up to us to be smart enough to look and to dig until we come up with what could potentially be causing this or that.
Kate: (24:27)
I’m thinking our listeners may be wondering right now. “Okay, so I’ve figured out that I’ve never been well since that pneumonia.” You may or may not want to address it in this podcast, but can you give us some clues as to what the next steps would be if you do realize that you are never well since X, Y, or Z?
Joette:
Well, let’s say it’s the person ever since they had pneumonia, now, they can’t have dairy. They can’t have wheat. They have food intolerances. They can’t eat shrimp. They can’t have strawberries. They can’t be around peanut butter, et cetera. That is a common, long-term, not-discussed side effect of antibiotics. It changes the gut flora.
And so, in changing the gut flora, now, they have bloating and indigestion. Anytime they eat these foods, they may even get anxious from it. And then we use homeopathic medicines to go after those particular conditions.
So, in some people, antibiotic use actually causes anxiety because it changes the gut flora. And the gut flora’s so keenly connected to the way we think, the way we experience life.
Other people? It might cause bloating, as I said. In other people, it might cause constipation.
So, what does it cause? That’s how we go about approaching the use of the homeopathic medicines based on the condition that it causes and the symptoms and how they present.
Kate:
Joette, this has been really enlightening, and I know your listeners have gotten a lot out of the information you shared today.
Joette: (26:06):
Well, my last words, my message is stay curious, my friends.
Don’t take what someone tells you as gospel. It’s up to you. If you really want to understand health, really want to understand why you are limping along, so to speak. You need to take a hard look at what you have done, what you’ve accepted … what we’ve all accepted.
I was there too, my friends. I’m not shaking a finger at you. I’m encouraging you to do what I figured out a long time ago, some 40 years ago. That it’s important that we know what substances are going into our bodies and on our bodies in order to determine what we do next.
So, stay curious.
Kate:
All right. Well, thank you for being here today and sharing this great information.

Kate:
This is the Practical Homeopathy® Podcast, episode number 120.
Joette:
Hi! This is Joette Calabrese. My Practical Homeopathy® is transforming lives all over the globe by offering health freedom!
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but I say a podcast is priceless.
I want you to hear — in their own words — how regular people just like you have reshaped their lives using the practical protocols I teach in my Practical Homeopathy®.
So, with the help of my reporter Kate, I bring you this podcast series featuring interviews with moms, dads, teens, health care practitioners and Academy of Practical Homeopathy® students from all walks of life.
With education, you can follow in these students’ footsteps. You can eliminate your fear of illness and injury by learning how to care for yourself and your family. Like them, YOU can be in control — without acquiescing to authority — to live healthier, more autonomous lives. Indeed, you, too, can heal yourself and your family through my brand of homeopathy — Practical Homeopathy®.
Kate: (01:30)
If you want to hear about some amazing homeopathy success stories, how to become a “cool kid” who knows about homeopathy, understand what The Academy of Practical Homeopathy is, or maybe what it looks like to create a thriving homeopathy consulting business, or even just how to help those around you and those you love: this is the podcast for you.
We’ve got a lot to cover today with a very special guest. So, let’s get started.
Today’s guest is Leanne Burns. She’s a physical therapist, a homeopath, a homeschool mom, and embodies all things adventure. So, everyone help me welcome Leanne to the podcast.
Leanne:
Hi Kate.
Kate:
Hi! It’s so great to be with you today. We have a ton to talk about, and I know you and I could talk for hours and hours, but we won’t do that to the listeners today. But we’re going to pack a lot in this 20 to 30 minutes that we have together, and I would love for the listeners to get to know a little bit about you before we begin.
Tell us about some of your adventures, Leanne.
Leanne:
Oh, boy. I still like to get out in the outdoors. I’ve always been an outdoors person, so I like to ski. I like to paddleboard but prefer to kayak. I’m a little bit faster on the kayak than the paddleboard.
I boat; I hike; I walk every day.
I just like to be outside, and a lot of things come to me when I’m outside. So, I’ve found some animals in distress when I’m out there, and I’ve been able to help them. Also, I hike a lot with my family, so I’m always carrying remedies and always prepared for whatever comes at us.
Kate:
And in fact, I remember one class that we had in The Academy — I don’t remember if it was a Mastery™ or Academy — but you were actually rock climbing. And you joined us for one of our classes — our live lessons — and that was pretty fun.
Do you remember that?
Leanne:
I do remember that. That is another thing I do.
Actually, my son’s a big rock climber and has been doing camps every summer. And last year, we did something different. We went as a family, and he took a couple of friends. And the guide said, “Hey, I’ll throw you in. Why don’t you do it too?”
So, I got to do it for the first time on real rocks and not in a climbing gym. And other than that, I hike on rocks and climb around on ’em, but I’ve never been roped in and being belayed, so it was kind of fun.
I got to belay my son, and he got to belay me on the rocks, and it was great. Yeah, great fun.
Kate:
That was commitment, Leanne, to join a class while you’re rock climbing.
Anyone who has an excuse, I don’t think that there is one because you joined rock climbing.
So, let’s hear a little bit about your homeopathy journey. You’ve known about homeopathy for a little while, but you really became entrenched in the last few years, so tell us about that.
Leanne: (04:24)
Yeah, so in 2017, my son came downstairs, and we were two days away from going skiing, and he was in probably second grade (I think it was). And he came down all dressed in his clothes for school, his backpack on. He says, “Mom, I just threw up and have diarrhea.”
I’m like, “Holy cow, what am I going to do?” You know?
A friend of mine, who is an acupuncturist and dabbles in homeopathy and Chinese medicine, she said, “Anytime something like that happens, call me.”
I called her. She said, “Meet me at your clinic. I have the remedy for you.”
And I got there, and she had a little bottle. It had “ARS 30C” on it. It was a water dose. “Just tap it 10 times and give it to him under the tongue and see what happens.”
Of course, his first question was, “Is it going to taste?”
And I said, “No, it’s just water.”
He took it, and he never got sick again. Went on our trip; everything was great.
I’m like, “Huh, wonder what’s in that?”
And she said, “You need to get a kit.”
So, I got a kit, and I started reading on it. And I just got, “Wow! This is complex!” You know? “How do I know? There’s so many remedies for flu and this?”
And I was working full time and running my business full time, and I’m like … It collected dust for a couple of years until I got attacked by sumac.
Leanne: (05:37)
Poison sumac is no joke. After about 1,100 milligrams of prednisone, I reached out to my friend again.
We tried a couple of things — homeopathy — and she referred me to a classical homeopath. And I hadn’t slept in three weeks, and I was still itching … my entire body.
Of course, when washed the original insult, I took that scrubby that I washed it off on my hand with, and I went all over my body.
Kate:
Oh no!
Leanne:
So, I was pretty miserable.
And, of course, you can’t sleep on steroids either. You could read seven books in a week on steroids. And so, I was itching as my brain was going. And so, she took my case and recommended Sulphur 30. Of course, it was classical, so she wanted it in water.
She had me do it one dose and then wait. Which I was in a hurry, but I actually had a pretty significant — probably 40% — difference that night, that day.
And then two days later, she split that dose. And I took a tablespoon out of that and made another water remedy, and that was all she wrote. By the weekend, I was sleeping through the night.
When things changed in 2020, and my son’s STEM class got shifted out. I received a timely email from Joette, and I had gotten on her list.
Leanne: (07:02)
I didn’t really realize it, but when I was in my panic about the sumac, I had gotten on her mailing list, and I had this ton of emails. I’m like, I got to get rid of these emails. And I was going through ’em, and a new one came in, and it was the “Cool Kids.”
I’m like, my homeschooling son … his STEM class got shut down due to the pandemic and the fears and so forth. So, I said, “Well, let’s do something science.” Let’s do something applicable to today and that he could use in his lifetime.
So, I just did it alongside of him, and I couldn’t believe it. It was all I had looked for. Going from classical to Practical. It was like, this is what I wanted. I wanted recipes. I wanted a way to be very efficient and effective.
That’s how I work in physical therapy. That’s how I worked my entire life. That’s how I work in my house. I want to be efficient and effective.
It just blew me away. The Banerjis … When I first got the Banerji book, I’m like, “Huh, I guess this is good to have on the shelf. I’m not sure if I’ll use a lot of it, but I have it.” [laughter] That thing is falling apart. I’ve had to re-glue the binding of it. S
So, from there, I did the Pain course, and that was kind of a catalyst. I like to think things out and talk things out. So, I already had patients that, as I’m listening to the remedies that Joette’s describing in the Pain course, I’m like, “That’s so-and-so, and that’s so-and-so, and that’s so-and-so. You know?”
“Doesn’t like riding on a bumpy road.” “Feels lame”. I had Ruta, and I had Belladonna. I had all these things that were just coming to mind, and I was writing their names next to all these remedies. And then I talked to them, and I could talk out those remedies and learn it a lot better.
I also did something that I don’t know that everybody does. I actually did the recommended reading and classes that she had. She had the “Intro to Homeopathy” [included with course purchases] and so forth. And I found that very fascinating. That actually helped in The Academy ‘cause I’d already had the exposure to that.
And hopefully, Wednesday, I’ll get to go to the Samuel Hahnemann Monument in Washington D.C.
Kate:
Oh, that’s right. Yeah.
Leanne:
Yeah. So that’s kind of where I went.
After I found some of those protocols and the Banerji protocol for the flu that was going around, I started getting some people asking questions of me. Somebody had a bit of a miracle. They were able to sleep without any medications after about 12 years, by way of having the flu and then us talking about other things. She put a Facebook post out there, and then all of a sudden, I was getting calls and messages and everything.
I said, “How? I can’t handle this volume. I want to help all these people.”
That’s when I did the “Intro to Homeopathy” classes in the community, and I did two of them. One was for general people, and then one was for healthcare providers and massage therapists and chiros and things like that.
That really did something unexpected. I didn’t expect it to take … I mean, I was just basically, “Here, this is how you use Joette’s website. Here’s how you use Practical Homeopathy®. Here’s what it is. Here’s how to use it. She has these great things — these great recipes — and if you really want to, you can take her Gateway courses and learn more.”
After that happened, all of a sudden, classes started popping up everywhere in about a Tri-County region. And then more classes and more classes and more classes, and all of a sudden, we had this big community of people wanting to know more about homeopathy and really seeing the value.
Kate:
After that, You were teaching people how to help other people, and then, you wanted to learn more at that point, or what were the next steps?
Leanne: (10:44)
Well, I did. It’s kind of funny because I wanted to teach them so that I wouldn’t have all the responsibility. And like, “I don’t want to do this. I don’t want to be a homeopath.” And all of a sudden, I’m like, “Yes, you do want to be a homeopath!”
It’s like everything was directed. It all came together. It was just such a time as this. As a believer, I feel that it was directed spiritually as well. The people that I needed in my life, they just were right there. Everything just came. It was very fluid. It happened kind of organically.
I listened to every single podcast that Joette had. I’d do it when I was gardening. I’d do it when I was out walking. I’d do it all over. And she would always mention something about The Academy. “We’re working on The Academy. We’re working on something big!” You know, on and on and on.
I said, “I’ve got to do this.”
So, I applied for the first cohort in — and got accepted and started in — September of 2021 and then graduated in 2022. Which by the way, 22 is my favorite number. It was my number … I used to play basketball. I was a pretty good basketball player, believe it or not, and that was my number. My dad’s baseball number was two. My grandma was born on the 22nd of February. So, it’s always been a number for me. And it’s kind of funny that I graduated in 2022.
Kate:
Yeah. And you did something else in 2022 as well.
Leanne:
Yeah, I started a business!
Kate:
Yes! A couple, really.
Leanne: (12:07)
Yeah, two. So, through The Academy and some of Joette’s employees there, Lara actually spurred me. And she goes, “You need to start taking some cases.”
Where I live in rural North Carolina, we don’t have a lot of remedies around. So, it’s hard to find things. You can get a 200 potency at certain places in Arnica, but that’s it. And they don’t sell a lot of variety.
So, I said, “Well, I need to start a remedy shop.”
So, I had the space available in my clinic, separated that out into an LLC. So, I have an LLC taking up space in my main business, but they’re totally separate. And so, I have a shop and I started taking some cases. I was still in The Academy, so I had a lot of studying. There was a lot of coursework each week, and I was homeschooling my son.
Kate:
And running several businesses and … yes.
Leanne:
And getting outside — doing all the fun stuff — because I have to get outside. I have to ground myself. I really need that. I’m a very active person; I don’t sit still a lot. But getting outside really just connects me … connects me to God, connects me to Earth, nature. It’s part of me.
So, opened that remedy shop, started taking cases, and I saw how well those were going. And, you know, I only took a few. And it was good because I could get the mechanics of it down. It wasn’t that different than physical therapy. The charting was a little bit different, but really I got my feet wet, and then, I could kind of get my rhythm. Graduated, then, in the fall. Became a study group advisor right after that.
Kate:
That’s for the next Academy class. You worked with the study groups and helped them to get through their Academy year.
Leanne:
That was fun. And it was another way of integrating and just really immersing myself. And they’d ask me good questions. I like to be asked those questions. I like to solidify the knowledge, and I like to be able to articulate it also.
So that was really good and good to listen to them. I learned things from them as well. Just like in physical therapy, you never stop learning. If I don’t learn something new each week, something happened; something was wrong.
Kate:
And you hear the information a little bit differently each time, too, and pick up different things than you did last time.
Leanne:
Sure. And that’s a good point because even in any type of learning, the more senses that you have involved in that — if you hear it, you smell it, you write it, you see it, any of your senses —the more senses you have involved in that learning, the better it gets integrated into your brain. And so, when I’d hear it, like you said, from different people explained a little bit differently or using a different analogy or using it in a different way, it really helped.
Kate:
So, at that same time, you began to be a study group advisor for the next Academy class, and then a few months later, you went right on into our Mastery™ program.
Leanne:
I did. That was really good. I can’t say enough good things about that. Smaller groups … just a different level.
When I think about it, I think about The Academy is giving you the base and the foundation. It’s a stepping up and stepping off point where you get a good basic knowledge of homeopathy and the remedies. But then you get to fill in all the gaps, and you get to integrate it and apply at a different level in Mastery™. And it really was. I just loved it. I loved the people in it. I loved having that access with Joette and good conversations back and forth. It was very valuable.
Kate:
And then you didn’t want to leave us all, so …
Leanne:
So, I went into Mastermind. Once … when you’ve been with all these people, and then it narrows down, and you get closer and tighter groups, it really is hard. You miss ‘em. I mean, Mastermind’s every couple of weeks now, and it’s going to like, “I need my group fix. I need to be talking with these people.”
We have a Signal group now, so that’s kind of good. But it is different.
Kate:
And I find it fascinating to hear how all the people that have gone through all three years or are in the midst of Mastermind, how their lives have really changed. It’s pretty incredible. I love …
Leanne:
Transformational. Yeah. Very.
Kate:
So now that you’ve gone on this homeopathy journey, I would love to hear about some of your success stories. I know you have a couple that we talked about a little earlier that you could share with people just to give them an idea of some of the things that they could do with homeopathy.
Leanne: (16:45)
Sure. So, one of my favorite stories is the dog with the rattlesnake bite. We have every poisonous snake that’s found in America (in North America) here in North Carolina. And the eastern Diamondback, they get to be very, very big — five feet long, six feet long and so forth. I’ve seen a few of them myself.
My neighbor, once when I had my farm, brought one and said, “Look in the back of my truck.”
And I looked back there, and my daughter was young at the time, and she says, “Don’t let your daughter go near that ditch.”
I’m like, “Oh, I won’t.”
Kate:
Wow.
Leanne:
So, I mean, it was probably three and a half, four inches in diameter. It was huge.
I got a phone call. I was actually on vacation. It was a year ago in the end of April, and I was actually taking my boat to get serviced. And I got a phone call and I know this person doesn’t call me unless there’s a problem. I was at a stoplight, and I said, I need to just call her because you certainly can’t text when you’re driving.
And I called her, and she told me that her dog had been bitten by a rattlesnake about 20, 30 minutes ago. What should she do?
And I said, “What do you have?”
And so, she had Arnica at the house. Of course, she didn’t have a lot of things.
I said, “Can you get him in the car? I’m about the same distance on the other side of the clinic as you are to my clinic.”
So, we met at the clinic. She got there a little bit ahead of me and had gone in. She didn’t have one of the remedies, so I had told her what remedy to get. She went in and got it, and she started right away. Again, using all of the things that I found in The Survivalist.
I had the one that she needed in the car. And she started everything, and I got there. We just kept taking turns, giving the dog remedies every five minutes or so because he was starting to fade.
As soon as she got there and started some of the remedies, he had kind of perked up a little bit, but he would sometimes lean back and just kind of close his eyes. And we got him going. And by that night, he was up moving with the kids. And the next morning, he was playing ball.
Kate:
Wow, that’s really fast.
Leanne:
It is fast. He was limping a little bit with the ball. But by the next day … and he runs fast. They live on kind of a community farm. Some family members and cousins have a community barn and chickens and all of that. And then, their house is on the outskirts of it, and they have a long gravel driveway. And the dog runs with the car all the way down the driveway when they’re leaving or coming back, and so forth. And the husband had taken a picture of the dog running the next day, going pretty fast with the car. Not limping at that point in time. Yeah.
Kate:
And tell us a couple more. That’s spectacular, but I know you have some more to share.
Leanne: (19:23)
I have an interesting one. A teen who has a diagnosis that we often see as something that can’t be treated very well. It’s cystic fibrosis.
He is a special case. He has been taking the protocol — the Banerji protocol — and doing really, really well. And he finally got some blood work done, and the doctors looked at him and said, “You must be taking that medicine.” (And I won’t name it because I don’t want to here.) But they immediately thought that he was taking this big gun that combines three medicines together.
And he said, “No.”
All of his blood work and his nasal swabs were perfect.
He then went on another remedy because of some allergies and so forth to dust and animals and so forth. And for the first time, I think, in his life (from what his mom said), he’s actually blowing his nose. He’s actually getting drainage that he can blow out and not just have to rinse.
So, there’s just some great things happening. He’s grown significantly, put on about 20 pounds. It’s pretty amazing to watch and to be a part of. And again, it’s not me; it’s the remedies.
Kate:
But you had to learn about them.
Leanne:
I did. I did. But they never cease to amaze me.
Kate:
Absolutely. Yes.
Leanne: (20:47)
I’ve had so many things. I had a woman that came to me with a three-year history of eczema. And her hands were just very cracked and itchy and red. Nothing could help her. She’d tried about everything.
She took the Gateway class, and that’s how she heard about me. And so, she did the protocol for eczema for about eight weeks, and there was absolutely no change.
And this is a great example of how I do like to have in-person cases. She actually had come to me in person, and she was wearing shorts. And then she told me about how she’s a lot itchier around the full moon and that she had these ringworm things come up. But I know it’s not ringworm because it’s not a fungus. And they were very itchy, and she had some marks on her legs and so forth.
And my first response was, “Have you had a dog?” She actually had homesteads. But, “Did you have a dog growing up?”
And it turns out that she had spent some time overseas and so forth. And she was a homesteader and had goats and dogs and all sorts of different things. And we were going to go with the parasite protocol, but she was a little hesitant. She wanted to try the second line of the eczema protocol.
And within a day and a half, she was calling me, and she was, again — full moon/full bore. She couldn’t sleep, anything.
So, we started her on the parasite protocol, and within, I’d say, a day and a half, she was able to feel a difference. Then, she started sleeping through the night. And then within two weeks, her skin was looking good.
It’s now several months later, and her hands are normal, and she is so happy. One of the things that she said to me was pretty interesting because it’s sort of like when you look at a thermometer, and the temperature rises, and the bulb and the red goes up. And she said it’s like the itchiness on her body is all going down towards the ankle.
So, everything from the waist up is good … and actually down just to the knees and the feet. So, it’s just gone down from the top down.
Kate:
Skin things can take a long time to heal too. So, I feel like that’s a really good response.
Leanne:
Yeah, it’s been about 16 weeks — four months. Yeah.
Kate:
Yeah. She’s thankful. I’m sure
Leanne:
That she is. She is.
Kate:
Sounds miserable. Anything else that you want to share for success stories?
Leanne: (23:25)
I can tell you about a fun one, too, because this was where the Gateway classes and the people that took them really came into play.
I had a young mom on a military base. I was actually hiking in the mountains. I think it was when I was doing … no; it was the year before that … the rock climbing. We were hiking and so forth, and I got a phone call from somebody in town. And they said, “Do you have the remedy for blood clots at your clinic and your shop?”
And I said, “Yeah! It’s always in supply there.”
This person had been diagnosed with blood clots in her legs and was a military spouse. Went on base, had it diagnosed, and they prescribed some medicines. And when she went to get the medicines at the pharmacy on base, they were out of stock, and she didn’t have any resources.
So, she reached out into the community. A couple of ladies got together and got the remedies to her.
Four weeks later, she went in, and the doctor said, “Well, did you take the prescription?”
And she said, “No, I couldn’t get it. It was out of stock.”
She goes, “What?” She goes, “You should have been taking it because they’re to thin your blood. They’re not going to change the blood clot. They can’t dissolve it, but they’ll make the blood go around it.”
She didn’t tell her that she was taking homeopathy. I think she told the sonographer. She said, “We’ll just do another doppler, and we’ll look at these.”
So, she went down, had the same conversation with the person doing the doppler. When they did the doppler, the clots were completely absent. Dissolved. Gone.
Kate:
Wow.
Leanne:
What a testimony! And what the doctor said was, “Well, whatever you’re doing, keep doing!”
Kate:
I feel like that’s what they always say.
Leanne:
Yeah.
Kate:
That’s great.
Leanne:
That was the same with cystic fibrosis case. “Whatever you’re doing, keep doing.”
Kate:
Isn’t it exciting, Leanne, to hear? I mean, you must hear these stories every day.
Leanne:
I do. It keeps you addicted, you know?
I’m a lot like Joette in that way. It’s that the more you see, the more you want to help; the more you want to do because you just get addicted to seeing people thrive and get better and have that response. It’s kind of hard to explain.
Kate:
Yeah. Now, I bet some of the listeners are thinking, “That’s great, Leanne. You’ve had all this school, and you’ve had this experience, and you know how to do these things. But how in the world do I know how help people?”
What would you say to those people who are really wanting to do this and help others or help their families, but they are maybe where you were four years ago or that you didn’t have all this knowledge? What would you say to them?
Leanne: (26:10)
Start.
When I started using it myself and helping people in the community use it, I had actually gotten protocols for allopathy … protocols for a naturopathic. How can you treat things without a prescription medicine, so you can have all these vitamins? And that was about two and a half pages long. And I was like, “Wow, how can anybody take all of that?”
And then I got the little protocol of the Banerjis, and it was like six things, and you don’t have to use everything. But at any rate, I started. I just said, “Well, let’s give it whirl.”
And people were just so happy and responding so well. You just start using it. And you have to develop that community.
From that, I started developing a community of people close to me, and they started taking the Gateway classes. And then, they started creating more groups from those. If two people out of their group then did Gateway groups … then, two more people from that …It was just like a big tree, a Christmas tree of Gateway groups and leaders.
You know, it’s really nice, especially when you live in a rural area, to have people in different … “Can you get a remedy to such and such? Can you …” You know.
Just the willingness of those people and the excitement. They started using it with their families and seeing how it blessed them and worked with them. It kept them autonomous. They didn’t have to go anywhere. They didn’t have to get a prescription. They started feeling comfortable with their families and then other people and their neighbors. It just spreads. It really spreads.
Kate:
So, you said just start. Just start somewhere. Doesn’t matter where, right?
Leanne:
No. Start with those closest to you. Start in your family; start with yourself. Pick something simple and see what happens.
Kate:
And we’ll put a link for the Gateway to Homeopathy study guides so that those of you who are listening and wondering what that is, you can find that resource.
So, I want to ask you — I try to ask people that I’m talking to — what is your favorite remedy and why?
Leanne: (28:07)
Do I have to pick just one?
Kate:
I know! If you are stuck on a desert island …
Leanne:
Oh no, that’s different. See, that would be Arsen …
Kate:
That’s a different remedy.
Leanne:
Right? That might be Arsenicum.
Kate:
Me too! That’s what I …
Leanne:
Because it’s like a Swiss Army knife.
Kate:
Yes. That’s what I always say! Let’s just say what you’re loving right now.
Leanne:
Okay. Well, as you know — and a lot of people know — I’m the Quebracho Queen, so I really like that remedy.
Kate:
Can you spell that for the listeners?
Leanne:
Yeah. Q-U-E-B-R-A-C-H-O. I think sometimes it’s “K- brocko.”
Kate:
And Joette did talk about that on the last podcast, so we’ll put a link to that as well if people want to learn more about that.
But why are you loving that remedy?
Leanne:
I’ve seen some miracles with it in a mother tincture. I’ve seen some miracles with it in potency.
I know of two specific cases — well, three actually — that I kept one person out of the hospital. I got two other people out of the hospital with it and really took them out of danger, I should say.
I like to use it paired. I have a dynamic duo — the Naja and Quebracho — and that’s just what I like to use.
I don’t leave home without those two. Those two. It’s Aconitum and those two. Right?
Kate:
The “don’t leave home without it” list. Okay, good.
Typically, what type of conditions do you use that for?
Leanne:
Typically, upper respiratory symptoms and, yeah, shortness of breath. And I think Joette mentioned that in her podcast, so that was good.
Kate:
Alright, I think we’ve covered a lot. So, as we close today, Leanne, what would you like to share with the listeners?
Leanne: (29:48)
I’d like to share that when I started this journey, I was enmeshed in a medical system that really was limited and wasn’t working well. The outcomes were disappointing and oftentimes created side effects.
And now, through immersion in homeopathy, I have a lot more freedom, and this system of medicine is unlimited, accessible and curative.
And if I could share … I didn’t go on that journey or get on that track right away. I started by listening to podcasts and studying. I listened to every single one of Joette’s podcasts. And I think that if one were to start there and to hear those stories, those stories would be so powerful that they’d integrate these medicines into their daily lives.
