Julia is a nationally acclaimed keynote speaker, healthcare advocate, and bestselling author of Don’t Leave Me This Way (or when I get back on my feet you’ll be sorry). The book chronicles her struggle to regain control over her life and her body following a massive hemorrhage resulting in a paralyzing stroke. Julia has been hospitalized so many times she says she earned a PhD (Personal Healthcare Discoveries) -- a blueprint for how not to let the system dictate the direction, pace, and objectives of one’s recovery.
In March 2022 another health challenge occurred. Julia was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer. Once again, she wielded humor, optimism, and a conviction to overcome. She has had clean scans for the last 8 months with no treatment in the past 15 months.
Her perspective from inside the bed rails informs her insights on what leads to better quality health care and improved patient experience.
During our conversation, Julia shares what happened during a Near Death Experience at age 37, how growing up with 8 brothers prepared her for 3 major health challenges, why she chose to call her cancer Cindy, what led her to get an ultrasound when she never felt symptoms, what her oncologist said to her after she received a clean scan, and the great advice she gives to others who are feeling fear around cancer.
