Kelsee Gomes: University of North Carolina

Listen Later

Go Heels! Kelsee Gomes has an incredible journey to becoming a sports dietitian. Kelsee was also my SNIP mentor almost 5 years ago! We talk all about the SNIP experience, what I learned during that time and what would have both done differently. Kelsee shares the value fellowship positions have on athletic departments and how these roles can help sports dietitians get to the next level in their career!

Kelsee Gomes joined the UNC Sports Medicine staff in February 2015 as Director of Sports Nutrition. She works closely with UNC's varsity athletic teams, providing sports nutrition education, nutrition counseling and meal planning assistance.

Prior to coming to UNC, Gomes served as the Coordinator of Sports Nutrition at the University of Florida from 2012-15, where she oversaw the nutrition for eight varsity sport programs. Other previous experience includes consulting for the University of Central Florida from 2011-12, working for Tara Gidus Nutrition Consulting, and working as a dietitian in the traumatic brain injury and rehab unit at Orlando Regional Medical Center from 2009-11.

Gomes understands the student-athlete experience having swam at the collegiate level for the University of North Carolina at Wilmington for 4 years, where she received her bachelor's degree in health education and a minor in chemistry. She then went on to complete her master’s degree in sports nutrition from Florida State University. During her dietetic internship at FSU, she was a sports nutrition intern with the athletic department and also had the opportunity to work with professional athletes at EXOS in Phoenix, Ariz.

Gomes is credentialed as a Registered Dietitian (RD), a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD), and is a certified LEAP Therapist (CLT) specializing in food sensitives. An active member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), Gomes received the 2014 Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year award from the Florida Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (FAND). She is also active in the Collegiate & Professional Sports Dietitians Association (CPSDA).

Gomes currently resides in Chapel Hill, N.C. with her husband Michael and their two daughters Charlotte (3) and Amelia (1). She is still an avid runner and has run 10 marathons.

The Gatorade Sports Nutrition Immersion Program (SNIP) matches full-time sports dietitians with CPSDA members interested in getting more practical hands-on experience working with athletes and sports programs.

Each fellow will focus on career development under the mentorship of a host sports dietitian. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend. Working in cooperation with Gatorade, SNIP Program Managers match fellows through an in-depth application and review process. Mentor/Host-Sites also participate in an in-depth selection process conducted by a committee.
