As the Southeast Utah Health Department plans to crack open the door to visitors this weekend, where are local medical providers in this discussion? Jen Sadoff, CEO of Moab Regional Hospital, reviews the factors that have put them in a better position to receive an increase of COVID-19 patients. And she reveals the key to keeping the economy open – vigilance about wearing face coverings in public, social distancing whenever possible, and continuing to take this pandemic seriously. And later in the news, our partners report on how an impending US Supreme Court decision on DACA could affect the Roaring Fork Valley. Plus, a new report strengthens the case that the Colorado River is likely to see severe declines in the future.

The Southeast Utah Health Department released their phased ‘reopening’ plan for Grand County, which could move forward as soon as Friday. It closely aligns with a statewide plan for reopening business with one big exception – overnight lodging and camping. Grand County’s plan limits overnight lodging capacity and keeps camping closed to nonresidents. Reopening Utah’s local economies during a health crisis is not a straightforward issue. Each community is unique, and there are many factors involved including public health, safety, and well…politics. So on today’s news, we speak with Grand County Attorney Christina Sloan, who has closely tracked this planned reopening on a state and local level.

  • News Extra - Health Department Releases 'Phased Plan' for Grand County
The Southeast Utah Health Department has released a ‘phased plan’ for Grand County that would allow overnight lodging establishments to re-open beginning May 1, but with restricted capacities, aggressive cleaning requirements, and 72 hour ‘rest periods’ between room stays. Under the phased plan, camping would still be closed to non-residents until the National Parks are reopened. The health department does expect an increase in COVID-19 cases in the area as visitors enter the community. However, they currently believe they are “prepared to care for individuals who become ill, if we are able to limit the number of people entering our community through lodging restrictions.”
