We’re finally back to our weekly football season schedule here at the Silver Bullets Podcast. It’s been a long offseason, but there’s plenty to talk about.

We start with Ohio State’s starter at quarterback. Ryan Day is not going to let the quarterback battle spill into the regular season in 2024, as he has named Will Howard his guy to lead the offense. We discuss the ramifications of that decision and how we expect that to inform the OSU attack for the upcoming year.

Howard wasn’t the only player making news since our last show. The Buckeyes have named four captains for the 2024 campaign as well. We talk about whether the right or wrong choices were made both in the personnel involved and the number. We also have a new recipient of the Block O jersey and we feel like it’s a good choice.

Several more Buckeyes shed their black stripes and are now “official.” Kourt Williams was forced to take a medical retirement from the game, which is the unfortunate news in this episode. We wish Williams the best of luck in the next step of his journey.

Finally, we take a look at the bottom of the Big Ten. We can’t do our usual divisional ranking predictions this season, as there are divisions in the conference no longer. With 18 teams to rank, it would make for quite a long episode to go from bottom to top, so we’re starting at the bottom and rating the teams that we think will finish in positions 10 through 18 in the Big Ten. Next week, we’ll finish things up by making our bold picks for the teams that will finish in the conference’s top nine positions. As always, feel free to tell us what you think we got right or wrong. We’ll know for sure at the end of the 2024 season.

The Big Ten’s reputation as one of the premier conferences in college football is on the line. With the SEC’s dominance in recent years, the Big Ten’s top teams must prove they can compete at the highest level. In a post-Nick Saban world, anything can happen especially for the top contenders. 

Ohio State, Oregon, and Penn State emerge as the conference's heavyweights. Ohio State, led by head coach Ryan Day, boasts a roster loaded with NFL talent. Is this the season that they end the 10-year drought without a National Championship? Will the newest edition, Oregon, stack up to their potential or will the competitiveness of this conference be too much? Should Penn State be satisfied with a playoff spot but potentially no advancement? DJ and Jordan answer these questions.

This season, more than ever, the Big Ten has the opportunity to send multiple teams to the College Football Playoff. With a 12-team playoff on the horizon, the stakes are higher than ever, and every game will matter.

With the Olympic Games officially concluded, we take a moment to discuss favorite moments and athletes from the games. 

Today we preview one of our namesake conferences, the SEC. Known for its fierce competition and rabid fanbases, the SEC enters this season with high expectations, several title contenders, and juicy storylines. The teams to watch this season are clear: Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, and Texas. But who will rise to the top? Nick Saban’s retirement has presented new opportunities for the top contenders. DJ and Jordan discuss the potential effect this will have this year and his impact on the sport.

Georgia, under the steady leadership of Kirby Smart, is seeking to continue its dominance in the conference and the nation. Alabama, now under the leadership of head coach Kalen DeBoer, remains a force to be reckoned with. Will Texas continue to be successful in this new conference landscape? With new playoff rules and momentum from the previous season, Ole Miss should not be counted out either. 

As always, the SEC’s depth means that surprises and upsets are likely throughout the season. The 2024 season is shaping up to be another thrilling year, with intense rivalries, future NFL stars, and the possibility of yet another national champion emerging from the conference. Jordan and DJ offer their thoughts on where this conference will stand as they usher in a new era. With just two weeks left before kickoff, the excitement for the upcoming season is starting to settle in.
