He had to replace a legend. No easy task for Dave Wannstedt, who followed Mike Ditka as head coach of the Chicago Bears in 1993. While his 6 year tenure resulted in just one playoff appearance, Wannstedt’s persona would grow into what it is today, a premier analyst with a personality to match.

“He might the best storyteller I’ve ever come across” exclaimed George Ofman, the host of Tell me a story I don’t know. "It’s why he’s perfect for this podcast.”

Whether he’s waxing nostalgic about former Dallas Cowboy’s coach Jimmy Johnson or his assistant and dear friend Tony Wise, Wannstedt can weave a story as well as anyone. They’re always detailed and laced with a generous amount of humor.

Take for example his recollection of how he was introduced as the Bears’ head coach which is chronicled in this interview. The story has side splitting moments.

Wannstedt emergence as a top notch analyst both locally in Chicago and with Fox sports has much to do about his upbringing and personality. "I’m not surprised” admitted Wannstedt who said this is what he was like when he was recruiting on a college level.

Ironically it was a former Bear who paved the way for Wannstedt’s new career to really emerge. When Fox sports decided Brian Urlacher wasn’t cutting it as an analyst, they brought “Wanny” in and the rest is history.

This episode examines the many sides of Dave Wannstedt, exploring his great love for football, talking and story telling and boy, can he tell a story!

She has blazed a trail. Sarah Kustok was one of the nations top three point shooters in college and now she’s the only female game analyst for an NBA team. Paired with the versatile Ian Eagle, Kustok has quickly established herself with the Brooklyn Nets and her workload has included NCAA tournament games.

But Kustok’s basketball talents were honed in the Chicago area, first in high school, then at DePaul where she led the Blue Demons for four post season appearances.

Then a career in television began, a career that catapulted to where she is today. Kustok became so popular with her coverage of many sports including the Blackhawks first of three Stanley cup titles in 2010 that was enshrined in the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame at the tender age of 31!

Kustok continues to push forward despite a tragic yet celebrated incident involving her father who is serving a prison sentence for killing her mother in 2010. Kustok said, “I absolutely think about the angel she was.”

There are few sportscasters in Chicago who have had such a profound impact in their community than Kenny McReynolds. There are likely none who have gone through 42 surgeries, either. He’s defied the odds from gangs chasing him to a doctor declaring him dead. Not so fast!

McReynolds is very much alive and still ticking, over 40 years into a career that has seen him convince a local radio station it needed to do some sports to not only becoming an assistant college coach at DePaul but an NBA scout for 2 teams.

McReynolds grew up in the Chicago projects and when he wasn’t running for his life from gang members, he was running so fast he was invited to the U.S. Olympic trials in 1976 and ’80. The first of 19 knee surgeries would eventually end his athletic career but he had already fostered his current one. Injuries and illness have haunted McReynolds throughout his adult life but his incredibly positive attitude have managed to carry him through.

McReynolds Sports Sunday show has been a TV staple for over 20 years including some powerful guests such as former OPresident Barak Obama, Cubs owner Tom Ricketts and wrapper, Common. He’s a member of the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame though he couldn’t attend because of illness. He was inducted by good friend and baseball hall of famer Andre Dawson. And how’s this….McReynolds attended his 62nd White Sox opening day!

He’s been the radio voice of the Chicago Cubs for a quarter of a century. So of course, is his rather dry sense of humor Pat Hughes declared, “They still call me the voice of the voice of the Cubs 25 seasons later. It sounds like I haven’t had a job promotion in a quarter of a century!” Welcome to the world of this smooth sounding and wise cracking professional who opens each broadcast with, “This is Pat Hughes reporting.” And that’s exactly what he’s done so seamlessly it’s as if he’s part of your daily routine.

Hughes resume is dotted with distinction from his role as one of the voices of the Milwaukee Brewers and Marquette basketball along with calling Northwestern football and basketball.

But his biggest thrill came on a damp evening in Cleveland on November 2nd, 2016 when he became the first and only local broadcaster to blurt out, “The Chicago Cubs win the World Series!” As Hughes humorously noted the last time they won in 1908 radio hadn’t been invented!

Hughes stories are priceless including some absolutely hilarious recollections of Ron Santo, his broadcast partner for many years.

This is worth the price of admission to any game and then some.
