The Western Cape town of Oudtshoorn in South Africa is often referred to as the "ostrich capital of the world," and as such, there are several ostrich show farms located there.
In fact, Oudtshoorn holds the biggest population of ostriches in the world.
The town has been in the ostrich industry since 1864.
Frontiersmen started moving into the area during two periods of upsurge in the ostrich feather industry.
The first occurred between 1865 and 1870, and the second was from 1900 to 1914.
Today Oudtshoorn has a populace of about 60,000 people, making it the Little Karoo area's largest town.
One of the largest and most well-known ostrich farms in Oudtshoorn is the Highgate Ostrich Show Farm, which is located just south of town.
Highgate's métier is ostrich propagation, and visitors learn about how the large birds develop and have an opportunity to pet and fondle some ostriches, feed and ride them, and watch ostrich races.
Highgate staff members also demonstrate a miscellany of crafts that can be made using ostrich feathers, leather, and eggs.
The farm has been in continuation for more than a century.
The Safari Show Farm is another ostrich farm located near Oudtshoorn which also specializes in ostrich husbandry and conservation.
Safari started offering tours and hosting tourists in 1956 and offers different kinds of activities than Highgate.
For example, Safari also offers tractor tours of the farm.
Visitors can also visit one of the farm's hatcheries so that they can actually watch some ostrich eggs hatch.
