God delights in His creation. He longs to give His children good things. And just as a parent on a date night ends up talking about their kids the whole time and coming home with gifts for them rather than themselves, God is not reluctantly parceling out joy to people who have managed to earn it. He is a Father who delights in His children simply because they are His. Their joy brings Him joy. Their enjoyment of what He made reflects well on the One who made it.

Jesus lived this out in full view. He enjoyed meals and visited friends and participated in feasts. He laughed, sang, and participated in the texture of ordinary human life, not as a concession to His humanity but as a demonstration of what a full, rich, God-given life actually looks like. He did not treat the world's good gifts as distractions from the sacred. He treated them as part of it.

There are bits of heaven everywhere. In the daffodils blooming in the yard. In a child's deep brown eyes. In the first sip of iced tea, a friend's belly laugh, a quiet walk around the park. These are not guilty pleasures to be monitored and measured. They are invitations to see the goodness of a God who is both good and everywhere, hiding traces of eternity in the most ordinary moments of ordinary days.

Find joy in the bits and pieces. Let God's beauty have the final say.

Ponder Tonight

An unhealthy relationship with God's good gifts does not always look like indulgence. Sometimes it looks like the inability to receive them at all, treating everything with suspicion instead of gratitude, and missing the joy God specifically designed for us to experience.

God does not create anything without purpose, which means ignoring the everyday beauty of His creation is not spiritual discipline. It is a failure to acknowledge that He is both good and everywhere.

Jesus lived a full, rich human life not in spite of His divine nature but as an expression of it. His enjoyment of meals, friendship, and celebration gives us permission to receive the good things of this life as glimpses of the eternal life He has promised.

Gratitude transforms enjoyment from something we might feel guilty about into something that actually draws us closer to the God who gave it. Receiving gifts with thanksgiving is itself an act of worship.

Your Evening Prayer

Father,

May we remember that because You are both good and everywhere, we can find goodness anywhere. Thank You for Your grace, for giving us joy and hope even as sinners in desperate need of Your mercy. Forgive us for the times we have treated Your gifts with suspicion rather than gratitude, or missed the beauty You placed right in front of us because we were too distracted or too guilty to receive it.

Open our eyes to the bits of heaven You have scattered through our ordinary days. Teach us to rejoice in them, to thank You for them, and to let them point us back to You, the Giver of every good and perfect gift.

We love You, Lord.
