Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christians

Letting God Name What's Going on Inside

Listen Later

Socrates said the unexamined life is not worth living. Scripture goes further. The unexamined life, the one that resists honest self-reflection and turns away from correction, can quietly unravel us.

We avoid self-examination for different reasons. Sometimes it is simple laziness. More often it is pride, the quiet arrogance that insists we could not be that wrong, or the honest awareness that we are wrong and simply do not want to face it. Either way, the avoidance feels safer in the short term and costs us dearly in the long one.

Jeremiah wrote Lamentations from inside the wreckage of exactly that pattern. Judah had dismissed repeated prophetic calls to repentance, turned away from honest reckoning with their own drift, and eventually experienced the devastating consequences. And yet, even there in the middle of the rubble, Jeremiah did not give up on the invitation. Let us examine our ways. Let us test them. Let us return to the Lord.

The call is not to self-condemnation. It is to honest return. There is a significant difference. God does not invite us to examine our lives so He can crush us with what He finds. He invites us so that truth can do what truth does best, correct, heal, free, and change us into something closer to what He made us to be.

That kind of transformation requires humility. Not the performance of humility, but the genuine willingness to sit before God and say, show me what is actually there. Point out what I have been avoiding. Name what is going on inside me that I have not had the courage to name myself.

He resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. That grace is not just comfort. It is empowerment, the help we need to actually change rather than simply knowing we should. And the life that comes out the other side of honest examination is far freer and more whole than the one that refused to look.

Ponder Tonight

Self-examination is not the same as self-condemnation. God invites us to test our ways not to overwhelm us with our failures but to open us to the truth that corrects, heals, and sets us free.

Pride takes two common forms in this context: the arrogance that insists we are fine, and the awareness that we are not fine combined with the refusal to let anyone, including God, challenge us on it. Both lead to the same place.

Judah's story in Lamentations is a sobering picture of what happens when a people consistently turns away from honest reckoning. Jeremiah's response, to keep calling them back to examination and return rather than to give up on them, reflects the persistent patience of God toward us in the same pattern.

The grace God gives to the humble is not simply the feeling of being accepted. It is active empowerment, the help we need to actually change what we have acknowledged needs changing.

Tonight's Scripture

"Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD." — Lamentations 3:40, NIV

"Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves." — 2 Corinthians 13:5, NKJV

Your Evening Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Search our hearts tonight and reveal any pride, sin, or lies that are keeping us from You and from the good You have for us. Give us the humility to receive Your correction and the courage to obey the truth that sets us free.

Help us test our ways and examine our lives in the light of Your Word, and give us the willingness to turn from anything that dishonors You. We do not want to be people who know what needs to change but refuse to face it. We want to be people who come to You honestly, open-handed, and ready to be transformed.

Empower us with Your grace to change, to grow, and to follow You more faithfully. Do in us what only You can do, for our good and for Your glory.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
