  • Kara Swisher: 一位不害怕跳脫舒適圈的媒體奇女子

    英文敘述

Kara Swisher is not the one who is afraid to leave her comfort zone. When her career in Washington Post was going really well and she was on the trajectory to go really high there, on one bright sunny day she just suddenly had this epiphany that it was time to leave. She just felt she was no longer growing as a journalist there, so she quit the Washington Post for the Wall Street Journal and became their tech reporter. However, the same epiphany occurred years later. She just wanted to do something else that’s better for her. So again she made the choice of leaving another prestigious job.

Kara Swisher interviewed Jobs more than seven times in his lifetime. In the last interview she did with him before his passing when he was looking severely ill, Swisher asked two forthright questions that shocked everyone in the conference. One was “What do you do all day?”Second question was, “What are you going to do with the rest of your life?” She didn’t ask these two questions with mean intentions. She was just genuinely interested and curious. Jobs gave wonderful and thoughtful answers to both questions. Even to his dying days, Jobs was still thinking about innovation.

Swisher says that she thinks Steve Jobs had a successful life because he was who he was. She admires people who are true to themselves. She also wants people to remember her as someone who’s not afraid to be herself when she is gone one day. She also likes to be known as a good parent. She’s proud of her four children. As to what are the keys to good parents? She finds this obsession with academic performance and achievement to be disturbing. She honestly believes that most of her schooling is insignificant. She says she’s ambitious and hardworking simply because she’s happy with what she does. One thing she’s very particular about is that as a parent, you have to teach your kids the consequences of their conducts. You shouldn’t shield them from owning to their mistakes. Moreover she doesn’t believe in sugar-coating reality. Once, she was attending a PTA meeting at one of her sons’ schools, and a parent just remarked that every child was special. She immediately retorted, “No, they are not. If everyone is special, then no one is special! Let’s tell the honest truth here. We all know the rules and the status symbols and how we are always ranking people based on their wealth, status, creativity.”

  • Kara Swisher 導聽第二講: 為什麼她的訪談風格讓科技大老們又愛又恨

    英文敘述

Kara Swisher has a remarkable personal story. When she was five, her father suddenly died of a cerebral hemorrhage. This incident has a tremendous impact on her and her two brothers. They all have a strong sense of mortality. She said, “There’s a theory, and a great book about how kids whose parents die can be very high-functioning people, because the worst thing happened to them, and they got over it.” So not only Kara but also her two brothers have this incredible drive to constantly move forward in life because they know how impermanent life can be. Kara Swisher suffered from a stroke in 2012, and luckily it didn’t do too much damage to her physically. After she recovered from it, everyone around her thought she would slow down and focus less on her work and more on herself and family. But she was like, “are you kidding me?! I could literally die any minute now, so I need to keep going!” People told her that when she died, she wouldn’t miss time spent at work, but she retorted that she would because she genuinely loved her work.

Kara Swisher answers that she just works harder and is more persistent. Moreover, most people are handicapped by laziness and lack of observation. One common problem shared by many reporters is that they don’t take the time to analyze the information they get from interviews. They just quickly react, type, and publish.

When asked why she became interested in tech news and the Internet, Kara Swishers answers that when she was little, she wanted to be in the military, like her dad, but because she is gay, she knew that she could not survive as gay in the military at that time. Then when she was an undergraduate, she wanted to be spy, but once again the environment in the intelligence field was hostile towards gay. However, her interest in espionage and propaganda and the effectiveness of propaganda did not ebb, which is probably why she’s attracted to the Internet because it’s also a form of propaganda. And like a spy, a reporter also needs to cultivate her sources, so she can get as much information about the person she’s about to interview. Therefore, at the time of the interview, se has already known so much about the interviewee that she knows when he/she is telling the truth or a lie.

She doesn’t want things from people. She doesn’t need their love, I doesn’t need their money, she doesn’t want their acceptance or anything like that. She cares little about what people think of her, definitely not a people pleaser. Swisher says this has to do with her sexuality. Because she knows she’s gay when she was only four, she was actually super happy with the way she was born. After that, she discovered at every point in her life where she said what pleased her, she always got more successful.

  • 英聽極短篇:熱氣球之亂

On February 4, a US fighter jet shot down a surveillance ballon from China. China has insisted that it was a weather balloon that had drifted off its designated course. According to a US senior defense official, the balloon was trying to gather information about US military sites. The Chinese government denounced the move as an obvious overreaction. However, it’s not unusual for governments to use surveillance balloons to spy on other countries because they can take clearer images. As a matter of fact, the use of surveillance balloons can be traced as far back as the 1800s. They became an important tool for the military in World War I and II.
