  • Quieting the Gremlins: Taking Back Control

We all have those nagging little voices in our heads that tell us what we can't do, what we shouldn't do. Those are our little gremlins. And they often keep us from doing exactly what we want in life. In this episode, and the next, we're going to talk about those little gremlins and what we can do to quiet their noise.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

We often think that this is our voice telling us what we can't do. However, that voice didn't start as your own. That voice started from someone in your past; maybe a parent, or a teacher, or a friend, family member, coach, or maybe even a bully. And something that was said to you stuck in your brain and you took ownership of it and because you said it again and again to yourself, it became your own little gremlin voice.

The good news about this is that when you recognize that it isn't your voice, that it originated from someone else, you can change it, you can quiet it down.

  • Hope Theory: How Choosing Hope Transforms Your Life

In this episode, we are going to talk about Hope and Hope Theory and the importance of cultivating hope in your life. The last quote by Christopher Reeve, "once you choose hope, anything's possible", is the foundation of this episode. Having hope, creating hope, openness towards hope, is a choice that we can all make, at any time. As we'll see, making that choice makes all the difference in the world.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Hope has three distinct parts according to Richard Snyder: goals, agency and pathways.

    • Goals are the "cornerstone of hope".
    • Agency, also known as willpower, is what keeps you believing you can achieve your goals as well as stay motivated to reach those goals.
    • Pathways, or waypower, are the routes you choose to take in reaching your goals. When one pathway doesn't end up working, you troubleshoot and problem solve to find a new pathway.

    BEST MOMENTS

The capacity for hope is the most significant fact of life. It provides human beings with a sense of destination, and the energy to get started. –Norman Cousins

Hope is not blind optimism. It's not ignoring the enormity of the tasks ahead or the roadblocks that stand in our path…Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it and to work for it and to fight for it.

    ― Barack Obama

Once you choose hope, anything's possible.

  • Why Conflict Isn't the Enemy—And How to Handle It Better

In this episode, we are going to talk about Conflict and Conflict Styles. Conflict is inevitable, so understanding it and becoming more willing to effectively, kindly, safely and courageously lean in to resolving conflict allows for being more proactive when it happens.

The thing about conflict is that we are often so afraid to engage in any kind of conflict because most of us view it as yelling and screaming and fighting. However, conflict is really just two people with different ideas or perspectives. We can't ever completely eliminate conflict from our lives, so I'll also be giving you some ideas on how to manage it more effectively. We'll put together all the parts of conflict, including the elements, as well as the causes of conflict and conflict styles.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    5 causes of conflict:

    • Relationship – strong emotions, poor or miscommunication, misperceptions or stereotypes, and past history are indicators.
    • Data – which is characterized by misinformation or lack of information, different interpretation of data, and differing views on what's relevant
    • Interests – this is perceived or actual competition; and substantive, procedural, or psychological interests
    • Structural – focuses on unequal control, access, or distribution of resources and information; unequal power and authority, environmental factors that hinder cooperation, and time constraints
    • And finally, Values – which is different criteria for evaluating ideas or behavior; or different ways of life, ideology, and religion

    BEST MOMENTS

Peace is not the absence of conflict. It's the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means.

    ― Ronald Reagan

The quality of our lives depends not on whether or not we have conflicts, but on how we respond to them.

    ―Thomas Crum

Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

    ―Winston Churchill

  • Grief in Everyday Life: Understanding & Navigating the Journey

In this episode, we are going to talk about Grief. And because of the heaviness of this topic, we are going to keep it as simple as possible. This episode is meant to give you an opportunity to start thinking about grief in a different way and to hopefully open up the possibility for addressing any grief that you may currently be experiencing.

Grief is so intertwined with so many parts of our life. And often, it gets lost in the day to day. It impacts us in such a way that we often, without really knowing why, are just getting by. Now, I'm no expert. I'm not a therapist or a grief expert. What I can tell you in my experience is, culturally, we don't address grief well, and I've also felt a little lost because of that. Anyone else? And, grief is not just about death. It's about loss and transition and change. And the reality is that we are all feeling some form of grief, almost all of the time.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Take extremely good care of yourself. Always.
    • Find someone to talk to
    • Feel your feelings!!!
    • Don't stifle or distract yourself from your feelings
    • Know that the grief will demand to be seen…. you get to decide how
    • Give yourself time, lots and lots of space and grace.
    • Lean into love!!!
    • Sleep when you need to sleep, take walks when you need to move, eat better even though it may not feel as easy or satisfying.
    • Be gentle with yourself.
    • Give to others.

    BEST MOMENTS

Grief is like the ocean; it comes in waves ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim. — Vicki Harrison

Life seems sometimes like nothing more than a series of losses, from beginning to end. That's the given. How you respond to those losses, what you make of what's left, that's the part you have to make up as you go. ― Katharine Weber

Grief never ends. But it changes. Its's a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor a lack of faith. It is the price of love. –Unknown
