Bryan Fischer here with today’s Life and Liberty Minute. There is no mention of the filibuster in the Constitution. When it was first instituted, it was done to preserve unlimited debate, especially for controversial legislation, so that every senator would have the opportunity to argue his position on a bill. Eventually everybody had their say, they ended debate, and voted. Thus, in a genuine filibuster, somebody is always talking. But the Senate changed the rules so that now a filibuster means everybody stops talking, the exact opposite of its original intent. Joe Biden wants to get rid of the fake-a-buster, and for once I agree with him. I’m all for making sure that every senator’s voice gets to be heard, but I’m all for getting rid of this phony version, which stops debate instead of promoting it. Let’s have a robust debate, and then let’s vote.
