    Title: The Second Sister
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Claire Kendal
    Narrator: Emma Gregory
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-26-17
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Ltd
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Psychological
    Publisher's Summary:
An obsessive quest to solve the mystery of her older sister's disappearance puts a young woman in mortal jeopardy in this taut, sophisticated novel of psychological suspense from the author of the "truly riveting" (New York Times) The Book of You. An intoxicating cocktail of loyalty and secrets, lies and betrayal, reminiscent of Rosamund Lupton's Sister and Kimberly McCreight's Reconstructing Amelia.
A decade ago, Ella Brooke's older sister, Miranda, vanished without a trace. With every passing year, Ella has come to resemble more closely the sister she lost - the same dark hair, the same piercing blue eyes - and now she's the same age Miranda was when she disappeared.
Ella has never let go of her sister. She can still feel Miranda's presence, still hear her voice. She still talks to her. What holds Ella together is her love for her sister's 10-year-old son and her work as a self-defense expert helping victims.
Ella is certain that Miranda was taken and that one man is key to her disappearance: Jason Thorne. The tabloids report that a new link has been found connecting Miranda to this sadistic serial killer locked away in a psychiatric hospital. Ignoring warnings from the police and the disapproval of her parents, she seeks Thorne out. Ella will do whatever it takes to uncover the truth - no matter how dangerous....

    A great book to read!!
    Decent thriller
An entertaining, quick read which was perfectly enjoyable if you don't ask too many questions.
There is one thread involving a supposed friend - why would she be friends with Alice? - which seemed completely superfluous, other than to muddy the water ineffectively.
The possible explanation of why the police had seemed to have missed so many clues is pretty far fetched and I have to admit to being a bit irritated that every man in the book falls for Ella. It also seems to borrow heavily from Silence of the Lambs in parts but Thorne is no Hannibal Lecter.
But, like I said it's an easy read and pretty typical for the saturated genre with no real surprises at the end.
My thanks to Netgalley for this copy.
Lots of fun and well written...up to the same old same old damsel in distress rescued by a man ending. Yawn.
Found this book very intriguing. Listened to it on audio CD and the reader has a great voice. I enjoyed the story, the idea, the plot line, up until the ending, which kind of went on and on with that "lady in distress/victim" thing that is a cliche for me by now. I found myself thinking, Oh, no, not this again! as yet another man in shining armor comes to the heroine's rescue in the nick of time (highly implausible, too). Frankly, I think it could have had a much neater twist, but don't want to write a spoiler here.
    Very Enjoyable
I enjoyed this book hugely, after getting used to the constant dialogue to a character who isn't there!
There are some flaws that stopped me from rating it 5*. Occasionally the actions and dialogue are not natural at all, especially when it comes to a couple of peripheral characters.
Although the ending was very well written and exciting to read I was disappointed by the identity of the perpetrator.

Who do the lucky become when their luck sours?
One frigid winter night, the happily prosperous Mia and Michael Slate discover that a close friend and business partner has cheated them out of their life savings. On the same night, their son, Finn, passes out in the snow at a party - a mistake with shattering consequences.
Everyone finds their own ways of coping with the ensuing losses. For Finn, it's Jess, a former babysitter who sneaks into his bed at night, even as she refuses to leave her boyfriend. Mia and Michael find themselves forgoing tenderness for rougher sex and seeking solace outside their marriage: Mia in a flirtation with a former colleague, whose empty condo becomes a blank canvas for a new life, and Michael at an abandoned baseball diamond, with a rusty pitching machine and a street kid eager to catch balls in Finn's old glove. As they creep closer to the edge - of betrayal, infidelity, and revenge - the story moves into more savage terrain.
With honesty, compassion, and a tough emotional precision, award-winning author Joanne Proulx explores the itch of the flesh, sexual aggression, the reach of love and anger, and the question of who ultimately suffers when the privileged stumble.

    Editor needed!
This was a really hard book to get into, mostly because it so desperately needed a good editor. Overly descriptive. A good editor would know that not EVERY noun needs an adjective or three.
Yet, despite being so wordy, information needed for conversations and jokes to make sense weren't included, only to be randomly mentioned later (oh! That's why they said such and such).
There were conversations that made no sense. For example:
    "You knew my father? "
    "Yes...."
    Sentences later in the conversation:
    "Well, I'm his daughter. "
    "Daughter? I thought... nevermind. "
It was an endless string of easily corrected problems. I can't say for certain, but there might be a decent story buried in the mess.
    Another great ghost story begins!
Despite a few spots that could use polishing, I really enjoyed reading this book. There's a lot of action as well as mysterious goings-on that kept me in suspense until the very end.
The writer has presented an original work despite taking the reader into familiar territory. Character development is slow, but there's enough to flesh out a good woman who's had a difficult life and her kind, loving husband. At least, I think that's what they're like.
I have a feeling that Book One will be full of shocking revelations about secrets exposed in this thrilling prequel.
    Series Introduction story
I started this book knowing it was going to end on a cliff-hanger. I usually skip books like that but the story sounded intriguing enough that I was prepared to buy the next book in the series. This was an okay story, and I would think the series would progress the farther a reader invests. I couldn't really connect with the characters and I was hoping for something of a spookier nature. Given the cliffhanger ending, I think the first entry could have benefited from being stronger. I'm sure many readers will enjoy this. For me, it's a 3.5 star read.
    Beware Cliff Ahead
This is the second book in a row I've read that just ends abruptly at a random location in the story. There should be a warning that this is not a complete story. It is a teaser to lure you into the series. The writing wasn't good enough to accomplish that. Lots of errors and silliness, which if you plod through like I did, is rewarded with a cliff hanger.
    CLIFFHANGER!!! Don't waste you time.....
I wasted an afternoon reading this stupid ....hunk of junk, only to have a cliffhanger! When are these amateur writers going to realize that leaving a cliffhanger does NOT get people to buy and read the next book! NEVER! I've made note of the writer (real authors NEVER do this) and will never spend one penny on her books. Disgraceful.

    FANTASTIC
To Skin a Wolf is the 4th book in A.L. Kessler's Here Witchy Witchy urban fantasy series. Secrets are unraveling and I can't wait for the next book!
The Here Witchy Witchy series continues to draw me in. In To Skin a Wolf the element of creepy reached new levels...the title says it all! I was captivated by the conflict, action and mystery on every page. Kessler continues to open the curtains a little more on secrets surrounding Abigail and it drives me mad, in the best way possible. Every layer that gets pulled back seems to lead to a hidden door, which makes for an entertaining read and a world that I enjoy visiting.
Abigail's character development and strength makes her easily relatable. The fact that she can be strong and confident, but not self-centered and selfish is one of my favorite character traits. SOOOO many times I read female characters that are either one or the other and it is a breath of fresh air to have the two joined together and retain an organic feel.
If you are a fan of Urban Fantasy and are looking for your next binge-worthy series, this is one that won't disappoint.
You Won't Find A Wolf-Skin Rug In MY House
I just finished To Skin A Wolf and am already itching to reach for the next book in the series. A.L. Kessler works a mystery as well as Kermit works the alphabet. Not relying heavily on romance or flashy paranormal dramatics, the Here Witchy Witchy series actually leaves you guessing at what's going to happen next, who the bad guys are and who the good guys are, with a little bit of comedy sprinkled here and there. Like real life. But with vampires, werewolves, warlocks and witches, and Sphinxes. I've never wanted an expensive, hairless cat more than now after reading THIS book in the series haha.
Book 4 picks up quickly where book 3 left off (if you haven't read that one, turn back and do so). Abigail Collins is faced with probably the greatest foe of her life, struggles to keep emotional control of her magic, and the very normal pangs of jealousy when Simon is suddenly thrown back into her life. Someone is skinning the wolves in his pack, a gruesome crime that Agent Collins is personally requested for, and despite their past connection, she must work professionally with Simon and his hot head second to solve. There are still a lot of secrets surrounding those who she considers her friends and family, ones that could change her life forever and help her solve the biggest mystery of all; what really happened to her parents? And, unfortunately, no one is willing to give her any inkling to what those secrets are.
This book keeps to the Agent Collins solving mysteries that we have come to love so far, but also starts to get down into her personal life mysteries.

Angela Dunnewald's sense of self, of direction, is fraying. She finds herself lost and alone despite a calendar full of society events, charity meetings, shopping dates, and dinners her aloof husband expects her to attend. Desire to be intimate unlocks the need for achievement; Angela becomes unrecognizable to her peers and to herself.
Legters's new novel offers betrayal, passion, secrets, and truth, all from inside a world that threatens to suffocate to the vanishing point.

    Desire and identity
Vanishing Point is an intimate account of a woman who sheds a confining way of life and steps into the unknown, propelled only by an inchoate desire that takes shape through love and art. A vulnerable, authentic account of one woman's metamorphosis.
And a darn good love story, too.
    Well done!
Loved the book and found myself sneaking away to find time to read it! Well done!
Absolutely Worth the Read, Amazing Awakening Tale
The story is one of passion found, love lost, where we witness people drifting in and out. It is one that does not shy away from mistakes, from the lies we tell each other, and most importantly, the ones we tell ourselves. This bookâs main strength is its characters, specifically the main protagonist, and the journey she goes on to discover herself.
What I especially liked, in terms of the intersection between characters and plot, was the way the novel continued after the âclimaxâ of the story. It doesnât offer off a neat resolution. It respects humanâs inabilities, limitations, and failures. And for this, we keep reading, because I think in this second half is where Legters shines.
It is in these pages where I see the main departure point from some classics that this novel echoes, such as Lady Chatterlyâs Lover and The Awakening. This is where I see the fruition of all the little mentions and clues from before, and the space is afforded to the characters for them to take up the reins of their destiny, even the side ones.
Disclaimer: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
A Woman's Struggle to be Seen...
In this riveting, moving book set in an affluent suburb, Angela has vanished into a self that barely feels, who goes through the motions in a stultifying marriage. She is a product of parents who want her to be secure and practical; all her choices have led to a life of limited experience and dull, routine, almost meaningless pastimes and obligations. When she improbably--inexplicably, really--lets Daniel, a rootless young drifter, into that life, his ability to break through her boundaries and awaken her sensuality allow her to feel "seen" for perhaps the very first time. Events conspire to show us Angela transcending how she is perceived even by Daniel; she begins to see herself, and a path is opened away from all she had clung to with neither real love or hope, toward a difficult but authentic future. She changes; the people around her change; possibilities that could not exist at the outset seem within reach by the end.
Though often dark, and tinged with the gray tones of depression and quiet despair, there is a deeply touching core to this story that grabbed me and held, and kept me reading.

    Totally Disjointed
This has to be one of the least enjoyable and most disjointed book I've ever read
    The book with no interest
I enjoyed the first in this series, not so much the second and didn't listen to the third, but thought the synopsis of this one was interesting. Disappoining. I like Anna Bentink's narrative style but was really bored with the scenes with the children and found some of the ideas preposterous - the friend who seemed absolutely fit but was, within days, dying in a hospice, for example and the scenes with the botanic artist were so boring. I gave up after about three hours and won't be trying any more of this author's work.

    A psychological thriller.

The second half takes off like a jet
I was drawn to this book by the cover, not by "Mother." The first half of the story builds and builds at a steady pace but when you move forwards from there, as a reader, you understand why there was a deliciously tempting plot, which plummets you into a pit of twists and turns. The second half takes off like a jet.
The characters are interesting, but are they as they appear? The main characters: Franny and Mother, have been pretty fleshed out by other reviewers, so instead of talking about what happens, I'll just say that you should hold on for a pretty great ride with these two protagonists.
All in all an entertaining and surprising plot.
Very enjoyable read and well worth five stars.
    Fast read
This book was a fast read, it puts me in the mind of Psycho which I think is amazing! I definitely recommend this book.
    Mystery with a twist
Excellent mystery with an undertone of weirdness.. Very well written, impossible to put down. I'll be looking at the author's other books.
Mother Is Full Of Twists, Turns And Surprises
Colin Griffiths, author of such excellent books as: "Doll's House", "Never Say Goodbye" and "Underwood", tops himself with "Mother", his newest novel. "Mother" was edited by Grant Leishman, author of "The Photograph".
Griffiths is an excellent story teller, and he proves that in "Mother". It is well written, with a plot that moves along at a nice, steady pace. You will not get bored reading this story. "Mother" is full of amazing twists, turns and surprises. Just when I was so sure I had everything figured out, I was proved wrong. The ending was a complete and shocking surprise. The second half of the book is where things really begin to happen. I had a hard time putting this down. I read it in one day.
The main character is Francis Anne Tilsey. Her friends and family call her Franny. She works for the Benefits Agency, in the UK, similar to the Social Security Benefits Office in the USA. Franny also volunteers at a soup kitchen for the homeless. Franny has led a sheltered life, having to take care of mother since she was ten years old. Her mother is, in one word, a bitch. Franny meets David Hunter at the soup kitchen. He is the nephew of Helen, her friend from this soup kitchen. They begin to have a relationship, Franny's first ever with a man. Mother does approve, thinking that men are is vile. She calls her daughter a "dirty dog". Franny's relationship with her mother is a tortured one.
In the mix, are three murders. One, is of Harry Burns, a homeless man. Two women are also murdered in horrific ways. Semi-retired detective Kirk Walker takes a deep interest in these cases and has suspicions as to who the murderer is. He depends on his underling, Suzanne Edwards, for information.

Recognitions is the first of a trilogy.
    Members Reviews:
    Great narrator and main character
Recognitions is a great title, and a wonderful read! The ending was awesome and well worth the wait. It's touted as a spiritual book, which is due to the subject of reincarnation, necessary to make the story line fit together. I enjoyed the way Ms Norris developed her story over several time frames, and dealt with autism and historical fiction in an entertaining way. Having an autistic main character of the book thrilled me as well! I have several autistic friends and was encouraged at Ms Norris' respectful and insightful portrayal of him as a responsible man deserving of love! The icing on the cake was hearing Natalie Naudus Bradner's voice doing different characters. It really helped the story come alive for me.
    Not what I expected
If you could sum up Recognitions in three words, what would they be?
    Sad. Hopeful. Thought-provoking.
In general a great book. I had a long 2 hour one-way drive to take--
in order to help one of my sons fix his tractor. So, I logged onto
Audible and did a real quick search and decided on 'Recognitions'
because of the sword on the front cover. I was thinking this was going
to have lots of sword fights and generally gobs of blood and guts.
Instead, what I got was a really captivating story about how our past
lives affect our current ones. So, I was surprised that such a
    sensitive book captivated my attention.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Years ago, when I was in the Navy (stationed in the far east) I was
really into: transcendental meditation; personal mantras, spirit
projection, out-of body experiences, etc. So, I was really engrossed
by the book. In fact, it passed, it passed my "got to take a bathroom
break as fast as I can test".
To me, it seems like a 'chick-book', lots of emotion, life issues,
and extremely limited blood and guts. So, it was not what I expected.
Further, I would have not chosen it if I knew what it was about. But,
still I really enjoyed it. Bravo. Next time I take a long trip, I'll
look for either this author or narrator.
Have you listened to any of Natalie Naudus Bradners other performances before? How does this one compare?
The book itself was very disjointed. Jumping from current day New
York, to 1700's France, to 1600's Africa. You would expect that a
recording of such a book would be at least difficult to follow, But,
the narrator did a superb job at switching meters, tones, and accents
to give cue's as to where we were at. I kind of really enjoyed
listening to her quickly establish a place and time, by how formal she
spoke with: meters, tones, accents, etc..
