Great mix of politics, romance and horror
The worldâs governments are a place of secret agendas and backstabbing politicians. Itâs even worse when the ruling class is made up of vampires called the order. Their ruling council is called the Hegemony and they have been in charge of world politics for centuries. Every continental territory is ruled by a Hegemon, the Hegemon in charge of North America is a vampire scientist named Caroline.
Ancient Enemies by Brian McKinley begins with Caroline about to leave for a summit meeting of the Hagemony to talk about the future. She is leaving her lover Avery in charge of their home. Avery has been developing psychic powers and has been feeling out of place in Carolineâs world. Now with Caroline gone, Avery is faced with trying to protect Carolineâs scientific secrets and he has found a new woman who is attracted to him. Meanwhile, Caroline is trying to keep her position of power in government.
Itâs hard for me to write a good summary of this book because itâs so complex. While its promoted as a paranormal political thriller thatâs not what interested me as I started reading it. It starts off from Averyâs viewpoint and he describes his experiences in Overeaterâs Anonymous and his feelings for Caroline. He loves Caroline but admits that they are very different people and he feels they are growing apart because intellectually he is not in the same league with her. We then get to Carolineâs viewpoints where she makes it known that she loves Avery but feels that he doesnât belong in her world, she wants to keep him close and protect him anyway. Caroline tries to give him a position in her cabinet but he shows that he is unqualified for it. While Avery may not belong in the world of politics he has shown his worth in other areas.
The love story between Avery and Caroline is what sold me on Ancient Enemies. I loved hearing from both viewpoints and how they want to stay together despite the fact that they are so different. Things get more complicated when Avery meets someone more like him and Caroline starts to realize some hard truths about herself. Just when I thought that the love story was the best part of the book we get more into the secret society of The Hagemony and how their government is made up along with the corruption behind it.
Each branch of the Hagemoney is described in detail and they are all different depending on what part of the world they are located in. The third point of view in Ancient Enemies comes from Neko who resides in Jade Tigerâs entourage.

    Too intelligent for shaving.
This quirky short story is set in the nineteenth century small town of Rail, where a previous accident had empowered some of the inhabitants with paranormal powers. When the body of a prominent lawyer is discovered sqaushed into a safe, his friend, who is recounting the incident, calls on one of these, Flag, to solve the murder. Flag has the ability to see the time sequence move backwards and he doesn't like what he sees.
Cleverly written as if of the time, for this reader the book left as many questions as it answered. The narration itself by Dalton Deeter was good but marred by production issues: overlong silent breaks between chapters combined with a the strange enclosed sound of speaking too close to a microphone within a tiny recording booth. There is also, in chapter three, approximately sixteen minutes in where, for about 20 seconds two tracks run simultaneously making it impossible to understand either. This reader, even after several listens, has still been unable to determine if this was supposed to be a representation of the chromoscopic vision possessed by Flag, or a simple mistake in the recording. Whichever it was, it distracts.
Apart from this, Mr Deteer's voice is of pleasant timbre and his characterisations are really distinctive and excellent, incorporating several accents. His intonation when reading the text between conversation is also good apart from an occasional hesitancy which gives it the feel of a first time reading. Overall, though, an inspired performance.
A strange story set amongst an equally peculiar townsfolk and one which conjors up clear images in the mind.. This book certainly piqued piqued my curiosity about the town and it's inhabitants, even if it is not one I would recommend to anyone without their having deeper background..

    Amazing first series!
I picked up First Blade by chance, having no idea why. Butt always willing to listen to my literary instincts, I began to read. Imagine my surprise as I found I couldn't put it down! I read it in a day and a half then read First Witch equally as fast.
Jane has created what could very well turn out to be another BDB-like series or Dark Hunters-like series. It has the characters that capture you and the groundwork for a group of people in a town you become very familiar with. It has all the paranormal qualities that keep people coming back for more.
Yet, if I understand what she's said, she plans this as a trilogy and will end them with the third? I sincerely hope I misunderstood. Or that she has since changed her mind. She has a wealth of characters to build on and should take complete advantage. She has such talent that just needs some literary maturing. If she would just give it half a chance she could be the next writer that everyone is lining up for just to get a signed copy of her sure to be famous series. Don't disappoint us, Jane!
This one is just as wonderful as the first book
This one is just as wonderful as the first book. The twists and turns keep me on the edge of my seat. The characters are amazing, the plot is interesting and action-packed, and I'm loving the romance. I love Jane's writing style and once I start reading I don't want to put the book down. I'm both excited and a little reluctant to read the next book since I know it is the end of the series, but I have to know what happens. This is one series I really don't want to end.
Knocked it out of the park
This book was a total win. I loved Georgia she was an amazing character but as a vampire witch she totally rocks. Who doesn't love a kick ass chic. Can't wait for your next book..
Book 2 just as jammed packed
Book 2 was just as jammed packed as book 1. The storyline was unique and different but the action, romance and characters we loved from book 1 were there. Love this series!
A great installment not as good as the first though
Georgia's personality in this kind of disappointed me. In the first book she was very strong and independent, but in this she was a follower and honestly wimpy. It was mostly sad, stockholmy, but it had a great ending. I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book!

Can't wait for Dalia's next book: Hope there's a sequel!
This book was written by the sister of a friend. I had a heck of a time finding it. None of the major bookstores are stocking it. It's a shame the publishers aren't promoting it better. So it's up to us, the readers to spread the word! Fortunately, I found it on Amazon. Bought it to support my friend/her sister. Wasn't expecting it to be so amazing! As the other reviewers have stated: It hooks you right away and never lets your interest wane. And though you want to do nothing but read it from cover to cover, it's divided into small chapters, so that you can put it down, if you must. It is extremely readable. The ending doesn't disappoint -- but it leaves you wanting more. I can't wait to read Dalia's next book. A CATCH IN TIME is more than entertainment, it will haunt you. It's more than a thrill ride; it's a book for thinkers and should be required reading for any Philosophy in Literature course. The book is not only good, it's important. Do yourself a favor: buy it/read it!! I guarantee you will become an instant Dalia Roddy fan. Let's hope this first book inspires her to write many more.
    super escapism
I loved this book. It grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go until the last. The concept is brilliant and the execution is so smooth, it carries you throughout the book in rabid pursuit of the outcome . This is a great book to read at the beach or on an airplane when you really want a good distraction and have a good chunk of time, because you won't want to put it down. The story and atmosphere created will stay with you long after you've finished reading it.
So much more than a thriller
This book defies genre; it is brimming with everything one could want in a book. With suspense, horror, philosophy, love, and friendship, all told in rich language, A Catch in Time examines what it means to be human. This book grabbed me from the first page, and did not let go. Be warned: you will not want to do anything else but read A Catch in Time once you start it.
    Read it!
My old friend Dalia has written a most interesting novel, one that kept me hooked till the end, or was it the beginning.... Get it and enjoy!
    Good and quick service!
Book looks good but have not read yet but write review after reading.....reviews were good and am looking forward to the read.

Even though Jack's curiosity has been piqued, he's not traveling internationally without a lucrative case to lure him. Enter one anonymous client with a large bank account.
With magical trouble brewing in Belize and a hefty bonus on the line, Jack can't say no. But are the monsters in this case too big and bad for Jack and Marin to handle?
Entombed is a standalone story that continues the fast-paced Spirelli Paranormal Investigations urban fantasy series.
    Members Reviews:
Good story, quite a few errors that a copy editor should've caught...
Fun book! With just one caveat: there are a lot of editing and typographical errors.
I think the book would've benefited greatly from having a copy editor and proofreader. As an involved reader, I'd love to be able to look past the editing errors (typos in names, for example Marion for Marin and Lily for Lila) but it's a little difficult.
The story itself is great and I look forward to more books in this series.
    Entombed
Kate Baray has brought to her pages a worthy spin-off. The tale keep my interest with dragons, spirit, medians, and what ever supernatural she could add to the mix. The storytelling was fast pace and held the readers to the very end. Worthy read.
Murder and mystery plus dragons!! Excellent!!
All our favorite characters from the Spirelli paranormal investigations plus a few new characters that grow on you quickly. Jack and Marin travel abroad to investigate a possible case after the mysterious disappearance of the local rat population. Only to run into their old friends and then into a ghost. The adventure that results keeps you guessing about what is truly happening and how the good guys will win. A good read for readers of all ages.
    Wow
What an unexpected read. Kate has outdone herself with Entombed. I was surprised with the amount of magic info released by Jack and Marin but by the end of the book decided it was an ok issue if not a good one. And if I never read about an aswang again, that will be fine by me. The one amazing thing to me was the ease with which the characters accepted magic into their world. I'm not so sure I would have accepted it as quickly even under those circumstanced. Fortunately, I'll never know.
Quick read, but such a fun ride
This is the only author I have on new release notifications. And I'm a very avid reader! I love Kate Baray's sense of humor and I adore that this series has an atypical pair of main characters. My only complaint is that this book (like the episodes before it) go down so smoothly that it's over before you realize! I tried to pace myself with this one, set timers and limits, but somehow it was over in less than two days and I just want More.

    Publisher's Summary:
The end of times hadn't been the end of times. It wasn't even the end of Pittsburgh. But what else to call it? Heaven and Hell and all the other planes had opened up on Earth and the battle was fought. But then it ended, and everything was still here, albeit with more than a few new additions to the taxonomy.
If the end of times had come and gone, had God gone too? The Constructive had given no sign, renewing the faith of some, destroying that of others. One question prevailed. Whether or not God was still around, what would be the place of mankind in the order of things?
As this story begins, Del Ballantine, monster hunter, arrives in a small mountain town to help with the infestation. He soon learns it won't be as easy as the last 10 or so places. One mountain is home to a witch. Another mountain, home to a primordial beast only one man ever lived to speak of. That man hadn't been able to say much before he went insane though.
Ariana, Jeremy, and Reggie make up the house band at the Foothill Hotel and Bar. Though Reggie is content to go with the flow, his band mates are becoming frustrated with their situation. Jeremy, too talented to stay where he is, must care for his nightmare plagued mother. Ariana, who hasn't yet found herself, finds that the thrills she once easily extracted from her middle-of-nowhere town are beginning to lose their luster.
Along the way, Ballantine meets the curmudgeon taxidermist and his uncommonly attractive wife, the no-nonsense hotel owner and her mute husband, a cocksure world traveler come to try his hand at hunting game from Hell, wood devils, shug monkeys, hunner dyers, hellcats, a ghost, and Jessica among many others.
There's action and suspense, magic and mayhem, sex and violence, mixed emotions and questionable deeds.
Can the people take their mountains back? And whether or not they succeed, will they find their place?

Well Crafted Story with Rich Characters
The Rogue Mountains is not a genre I would normally pick-up. However, I always try to do my best to support local talent & Joshua Tarquinio is that. I do enjoy books, no matter the genre, that are well written. Rogue Mountains is indeed an example of that. The story arc is excellent. If Fantasy or Horror are something you enjoy this could easily be a page turner you couldn't put down. The story-line evolves around a compelling cast of characters that are enriched with both background stories and solid dialogue. As secrets of the characters are exposed and legacy stories of the town are revealed the web of the story becomes richer. I also encountered more than a few surprises. Joshua did not let me fall into a rut as I was reading. Simply stated The Rogue Mountains is a well crafted story with much more than gore and horror. As I neared the end of the book I was anxious to find out if their would be a prequel. Good writing can do that. It is very well worth adding to your reading list. Some of the story involves sexual encounters, which refine the story, may not be appropriate for young readers.
    Entertaining and engrossing
I won't go into recapping the premise and plot here, as other reviewers have done a great job with that. Let me just add that this is a fun and thought-provoking read. The action is based on a great set-up (the Events of Pittsburgh), which the author promises to detail in further installments.

    Members Reviews:
    Not too sure of this.
This is kind of verging on a 2.5 star, but I'll rate it a 3. Really wish you could do a half star!! Anyway, this is about Grace Chandler, she is a Paranormal Activity Specialist in Tupelo. She deals with anything to do with the supernatural, so when a female body is found with a strange mark on her body, Grace is called into help.
This sounded so good and I was excited to start, but it just fell flat!! Now there was a few things I liked, and I think that there is definite potential there, but there was just too many things that annoyed me for me to enjoy this as much as I'd like!!
Here's what I liked: Plot wise, I liked the take on the different vampire species. It was intriguing and I'd like to know more. I also liked the idea of Grace and the unit she works for. Grace herself was OK. I wanted her to be a little more bad ass, but she was a good MC despite that. I also liked the little twist at the end, because it came from nowhere really.
What I didn't like: I didn't like the stalking bit!! I'm not going to explain that part, but I just found it so unnecessary and down right creepy. I didn't like the fact that the werewolf and vamp got on so well. That just doesn't happen, ever!! They very rarely work together, and if they do, there's animosity between them. I know this isn't set in stone, but to me, it's sort of an unwritten rule within this genre. Also none of the characters appealed to me too much! There wasn't any that I cared about, nor did I particularly care what happened to any of them.
In all, all I can think of to sum up my feelings about this is meh. It was readable and there were parts that I liked and parts I didn't. I do think there's potential there and I do think I'll check out the next one, just to see what happens.
Shannon Edwards was OK. She didn't really change her tones or cadences to add any tension to the story, nor did she change her voices for the characters enough, but she was clear and easy to listen to.
I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
    Good Read
Story plot was good. Narrator did an excellent job with the different voices throughout the narrative.
    Really not good
Vampires, werewolves, strigoi, secret forced bloodbanks.. Its a of blend of Twilight and The Strain but done really badly. A werewolf and a vampire that both have the hots for a human woman.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review so I felt obligated to finish listening to the book but honestly my eyes hurt from rolling them so much at the dialog.. This just reminds me of bad fan fiction. I'm sorry, I just can not recommend this to anyone.
As for the narrator, meh.. It was hard to tell if a better book might do her more justice. I often felt like I was being read to by an elementary school teacher.
