Locked On Angels - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels lost a second consecutive series to the Houston Astros on Wednesday, after a late-inning rally fell short. Despite striking out another 14 ties the day after doing so in the previous game, Shohei Ohtani hit a 2-run homer to make it 5-4, which was followed by Anthony Rendon and Hunter Renfroe getting on base with no outs. Unfortunately, the Angels couldn't come through. Defensive issues also ran Griffin Canning out of the game early, and last weekend's problems seemed to pop up again for the Halos. We'll tell you all about it in segment 1!

Then, there's been some concern around Shohei Ohtani's recent performances on the mound. Some fans feel the sweeper might be causing issues, but is that truly the case? Mike and Jon dive into Ohtani's pitch mix this season and try to find what has caused Ohtani to have a bit of trouble on the mound in his last three starts. We'll give you the facts and the stats in segment 2!

Plus, the Angels are a team above .500, sitting at 20-18, but why doesn't it feel like it? The Super Halo Bros. explain why despite having a winning record, it feels like the Angels are a sub .500 team, and they'll dive into some of the discourse around the team happening among fans. We'll talk about it all in segment 3!

The Los Angeles Angels struggled to mount any offense on Tuesday night except for Zach Neto's first big-league home run, as they dropped game 2 to the Astros, 3-1. With Shohei Ohtani on the mound, it felt like it would be quite a pitcher's duel; unfortunately, Shohei's difficult 5th inning ended up being all the Astros would need to win. Framber Valdez had 12 Ks on the night against the Halos, who couldn't stop swinging at strikes out of the zone and watching strikes in the zone. Mike and Jon recap last night's loss in segment 1 and have all the details for you, including Shohei surpassing Babe Ruth once again!

Then, Sam Blum of The Athletic wrote a very informative article regarding Jared Walsh's health struggles that have dated back to last year, and it was more than any of us could have imagined. We'll give you the details, when Jared Walsh could be back, and share our personal thoughts on how we as fans should have empathy for the players on the field.

Plus, Phil Nevin had a fairly interesting press conference after the loss to the Rangers on Sunday, one that most fans felt was good in that it was honest and open. So we're asking; is Phil's willingness to address the issues with the team a good thing, and if so, who is it good for? We'll tell you what we mean in segment 3!

The Los Angeles Angels got a much-needed win against the Houston Astros on Monday night, winning 6-4 to start the 3-game set! Patrick Sandoval gave the Angels some length in his start, going 6.1 innings before Matt Moore and Carlos Estevez finished the game, and the Halo hitters had the most timely hits to keep them neck and neck throughout the game! Shohei Ohtani's 2 RBI doubles and Brandon Drury's go-ahead RBI triple made the difference, as well as Anthony Rendon's RBI, Hunter Renfroe's solo homer, and Matt Thaiss adding on a valuable insurance run. Mike and Jon will recap this game and explain why a pregame conversation with Benji Gil may have made all the difference!

Then, is the Angels' pitching philosophy a one-size-fits-all approach? The Super Halo Bros. look to a recent article from Sam Blum and his discussion with Aaron Loup on the Halos' approach on the mound and determine if it's been impacting the current starting rotation. We'll take a look in segment 2!

Plus, Tyler Anderson signed a 3-year deal to be a starter in Anaheim over the offseason, and while fans have been hoping for results that could look like his 2022 season with the Dodgers, his starts have been somewhat of a mixed bag. Does this make him a bust, or a disappointment? We'll get into the stats and tell you our thoughts in segment 3!

The Los Angeles Angels lose the weekend series to the Texas Rangers, dropping 2 of 3 after starting with an incredible comeback on Friday night. Before we get into the bad of this weekend, we'll recap the way the Angels came back on Friday to walk it off in the 10th! Clutch moments from Luis Rengifo and Chad Wallach allowed Carlos Estevez to keep it tied in the 10th, and with Anthony Rendon at the plate, Zach Neto scored from third to end it 5-4! Jon will give you all the details in segment 1!

Then, Saturday night, the Angels' magic ran out, as they had a disastrous 9th inning that put the game out of reach. Despite Reid Detmers only giving up 3 runs and striking out 7, he did not get any longevity in this game, throwing 94 pitches before he was pulled in the 5th. Nathan Eovaldi on the other hand pitched 8 scoreless innings for the Rangers and induced a lot of weak contact to create outs. Jon will explain the difference in their two starts and how the 9th saw the Halos implode.

Plus, Sunday's game felt like the Angels were playing on "Very Difficult" mode, as they ran out Jose Suarez to start, and he was out by the 3rd inning with a shoulder injury. Despite getting to Martin Perez for 7 runs, the Halos saw this one slip away due to bad defense, pitching, and mental mistakes all over the field. Jon will dive into what went wrong and why this game felt like a loss before it even started in segment 3.

The Los Angeles Angels complete their first SWEEP of the season at the expense of the St. Louis Cardinals, as many of the regulars were on the bench and the backups stepped up! Everyone got in on the hit parade, as the Halos win 11-7. Luis Rengifo stepped up in a big way, but once again, Aaron Loup struggled, even in a low-leverage situation. The Super Halo Bros. will recap the game and share why they think it's time to cut Loup loose.

Then, it's FANMAIL FRIDAY! We're taking your questions about who should lead off, if Chris Devenski will be the star reliever he once was, and what we think of the Angels' remaining schedule! We'll give you our answers to these questions and much more in segments 2 and 3!

The Los Angeles Angels have an incredible comeback against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night, thanks to a Jake Lamb pinch-hit home run and a Mike Trout go-ahead home run to take the lead and win the game! Shohei Ohtani started this one and managed to strike out 13 through 5 innings! Although he gave up 4 runs with 2 homers, his teammates picked him up and got him off the hook! How about this Angels bullpen looking entirely different than how it started? Mike and Jon are going to give you all the details of this exciting victory in segment 1!

Then, were we all wrong about Jose Suarez? After many fans and the Super Halo Bros. suggested a move to the bullpen, Phil Nevin let Suarez start against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, where he shut them out through five innings and earned the win. Were we all wrong to doubt him? Mike and Jon take a look at Suarez's track record to find out what makes him successful and discuss whether or not he can repeat this moving forward in segment 2!

Plus, there's been a lot of talk around Gary Sanchez and the Halos' potential interest in the experienced catcher. Though his best days are behind him, he's an intriguing depth option for the Angels. So, we're asking, who is Gary Sanchez, and is his signing with the Angels realistic? We'll talk about if it makes sense in segment 3!

The Los Angeles Angels start the series against the St. Louis Cardinals with a win, taking the opener 5-1 off a Taylor Ward home run and RBIs from Anthony Rendon and Zach Neto! While Patrick Sandoval cruised through his first few innings, he struggled some in the 5th and left the game in the 6th, and it was Chris Devinski leading the bullpen and inducing an incredible double play from Neto and Brandon Drury that set the tone for the rest of the game! Mike and Jon will break down last night's game for you in segment 1!

Then, we'll take a look at the Angels' schedule for May and determine what a realistic record might be for the month. As the Halos prepare to face AL West rivals in the Rangers and Astros, will they be able to stand toe-to-toe with those two teams and the others they'll face in the month of May? We'll discuss where we think the Angels will end up in segment 2!

Plus, we'll share a stat with you that emphasizes the importance of defense and why the Angels need to perform better in the field! In order to help out the starting pitching and the bullpen, the Halos will want to clean it up around the diamond, and we'll tell you why in segment 3!

The Los Angeles Angels have emerged from April 15-14, and though it may feel like every win was sink or swim, it's a good position for the Halos to be in based on past team performances in April. Because of the day off yesterday, the Super Halo Bros. were able to take the time to reflect on the opening month of the season and examine the good, the bad, and the ugly. In segment 1, we'll share with you what was good about this team, from Shohei Ohtani continuing to do unprecedented things at the plate and on the mound to Mike Trout continuing his Hall of Fame career! We'll take a look at the new additions to the roster, including Gio Urshela, Hunter Renfoe, Brandon Drury, Matt Moore, and Carlos Estevez, and how prospects Zach Neto and Chase Silseth have performed!

Then, in segment 2, we'll share what's been bad about this team. The Halos have struggled to drive in runners in scoring position, Taylor Ward has not been able to find it at the plate, and too many defensive errors, miscues, and bad decisions have cost the Angels several close games. We'll dive into the conversation about what's been bad in segment 2!

Plus, as we discuss what's been UGLY about the team so far, we'll share some EXCLUSIVE news regarding the front office and the decision-making that's been going on between Phil Nevin and Perry Minasian, and we'll share how Arte Moreno stepped in to make a key change to the decisions on the field. Don't miss out on the news you'll only get HERE on Locked On Angels in segment 3!

The Los Angeles Angels were able to avoid the sweep and walk away from the Milwaukee Brewers with a win on Sunday, but not before dropping the first two games of the series. While Friday's game was close and ended 2-1, it was the decision to continue with Aaron Loup that left everyone scratching their heads. While Halo fans would've liked to have seen more offense against the Brew Crew, why did Phil Nevin choose to go with Loup for a second inning? The Super Halo Bros. will discuss in segment 1!

Then, Game 2 featured a strong start for Reid Detmers... until it wasn't. What went wrong for Detmers, and what caused the Angels to fall short? Despite two Trout homers and a 3-hit night from Shohei Ohtani, the Angels were not able to come back from the large deficit when they had both Ohtani and Anthony Rendon on base with no outs. We'll dive into the details of game two in segment two, and we'll ask the question: are Trout and Ohtani meeting the moment?

Plus, in a game that felt questionable from the beginning with Jose Suarez on the mound, it turned out that his start was the only game the Angels would win this weekend! What did Suarez do to get through five scoreless innings against a tough Brewers team? We'll break down game three for you in segment 3!

The Los Angeles Angels have often found themselves bailed out by Shohei Ohtani's stellar pitching on the mound, but on Thursday, it was the bats who provided Shohei with enough run support to get through 6 innings! Even though the 4th inning was a struggle, Ohtani persevered, and not only that, he nearly hit for the cycle, just barely missing a home run in right-center field. While it was a battle to secure the win, the Angels were helped by Brandon Drury and his continued hot streak, hitting yet another home run and amassing 12 RBIs over this Oakland A's series! The Super Halo Bros. will recap the action for you in segment 1!

Then, it's FANMAIL FRIDAY! We're taking your questions on the Halos, including, is there pressure on the young players to perform considering this may be Ohtani's last year? Is Matt Thaiss starting to come around? Would the Brewers consider trading Corbin Burnes to the Angels? We'll get to all these and much more on today's show!
