It was an interesting weekend for the Colorado Avalanche both on and off the ice.

On the ice, the Avalanche finished their 3rd of three straight back to backs in dominating fashion with a 5-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets. Then came home the next day and ran over the Calgary Flames, 4-1.

Out of 12 possible points in the three back to backs the Avalanche came away with 11. Yea, this team is hitting their stride at the perfect time.

Off the ice, Chris MacFarland and Joe Sakic made a duo of depth trades, both of which have us scratching our heads a little.

One sent Shane Bowers to the Boston Bruins for backup goalie Keith Kinkaid, while the other brings back defenseman Jack Jonson for Andreas Englund.

Not the best moves the front office has made, but we shall see how they work out.

Whoever comes out of the East is going to be one heck of a challenge for whoever comes out of the West. It seems almost daily there are moves being made by Eastern Conference teams, while the West is making next to no deals.

Another team would have seen the Edmonton Oilers take a 3-0 first period lead and saw it as a mountain too difficult to climb. The Colorado Avalanche looked at it as they had a lot of time to get back into the game.

Despite the Oilers twice pushing their lead back to two goals after the Avs had trimmed it to one, Colorado found the net late in the 3rd to tie it up, then Mikko Rantanen held on to the puck for just the right amount of time for Edmonton goalie Jack Campbell to get out of position so he could roof the game winner with 20 seconds left.

The Avs took both games of their weekend back to back and continue to climb towards Winnipeg and Dallas above them in the standings.

And if that wasn't good enough news....Gabe Landeskog is scheduled to start skating Monday.

The Colorado Avalanche have been buyers at the trade deadline over the past few seasons, and the general consensus is that they will be again this year. But the trade deadline for this season for the Avalanche is going to be a tricky thing.

When a team is active at the deadline like the Avalanche have, at some point all your big trade chips start to wear thin. The Avs still have some prospects and picks they could part with, but going off of past seasons, they don't like to give away either so easily. Could they? Sure. Will they? That's a difficult question to answer.

The Avalanche also are not big on rental players. They entertained it last year with Claude Giroux, but it is not something they frequent year after year.

Once again, the Avs are attached to some of the bigger names in the market, like Ryan O'Reilly and Jonathan Toews. It will take some creativity to bring in names like that, which the Avs could be willing to do. But we also should prepare ourselves for the Avalanche to be on the quiet side. Not for a lack of trying, it's just they lack what other teams can sell.

The Colorado Avalanche had a game they likely forgot as quickly as possible last week in their Stanley Cup rematch against the Tampa Bay Lightning. After a solid output against the Florida Panthers over the weekend, the Avalanche get another crack at Tampa, this time in Denver.

But, the Avs will also, yet again, be down important pieces. No Cale Makar, no Erik Johnson and Josh Manson won't play either. Can the Avs stop this Tampa offense down that much defense?

This is also the first game of six straight games that are part of back to backs for the Avs, with the majority of them having playoff implications. We aren't sure why whoever made the schedule hates the Avalanche, but we know we don't like them much either.
