The Edmonton Oilers were playing their best hockey of the season heading into this series with the Colorado Avalanche. The only problem with that is so are the Colorado Avalanche. After taking both games at home in Denver the Avalanche traveled north for Game 3 in Alberta.
Like they have done so many times in these playoffs, the Avs gave up the first goal of the game. This time from Connor McDavid himself in the first minute of the game. Edmonton had everything going for them. Then Evander Kane decided for some ungodly reason to change all that.
Kane sent Nazem Kadri flying into the boards with a vicious cross check that got Kane a five minute major. While the Avs didn't score, it sucked the life out of the building. The Avs would take the lead as the game progressed off of two Val Nichushkin goals, but Edmonton was able to tie it halfway through the 3rd on a Ryan McLeod goal.
But the depth stuck again as JT Compher, just finishing his time in the penalty box due to a tripping call, fought for the puck along the boards, won the battle then put home the game winner.
Now, with one more win the Colorado Avalanche will punch their ticket to the Stanley Cup Finals. All is good in Avs land right now. But the job is not done

A 14 goal output in game one naturally leads you to believe not much would change for Game 2. Not when you have two offensive minded teams in the Edmonton Oilers and the Colorado Avalanche, and backup goalie Pavel Francouz in net for Colorado. Francouz is a very capable backup and Avalanche fans were very confident they could win Game 2 with him in net. But you would be lying if you said Frankie was going to put up a goose egg on the Oilers. But he did.
While Francouz was busy shutting down McDavid and company, the Avalanche needed just over two minutes to find the net three times on Mike Smith, which is all they would need. Tack on a late Nathan MacKinnon power play goal, and the Avalanche are two wins away from punching their Stanley Cup Finals ticket.

It's a good thing there is a day off in between playoff games. Hopefully all of you used that time to decompress and take some meditation classes. But be prepared for more of the same in Game 2. Mike Smith will in all likelihood get the start for the Oilers after getting pulled in Game 1. For the Colorado Avalanche it is a little less certain. We don't know the full extent of the health of Darcy Kuemper. We do know he took himself out of the game due to blurry vision. If that has cleared up or not, we are not getting answers from Coach Jared Bednar.
The big play that was all the talk Wednesday was of course the Cale Makar offsides call. Oiler fans didn't like it, but the rest of the hockey world seemed to come around on the reasoning behind why the goal stood. Will that play stick in the minds of Edmonton and affect their play in anyway?
We also hand out grades for Game 1 which might surprise some

We jokingly said that if you were a betting fan, bet the over in the Avs / Oilers game 1 matchup which was set at +/-6.5, That was eclipsed by the 2nd period. The Colorado Avalanche and the Edmonton Oilers put on an offensive show Tuesday night with the Avalanche hanging on to an 8-6 win, even though they were up at one point 7-3. No lead will be safe in this series.
For the Avalanche there is the added question mark of starting goalie Darcy Kuemper. Kuemper left the game in the 2nd period and did not return with what was being called an upper body injury. It was being reported after the game that his removal was due to lingering issues with his eye that he suffered in the opening round against the Nashville Predators. This series might be up to Pavel Francouz now.
With a score like 8-6 there are obviously good things and bad things that happened. Chris and Kyle are here to break it all down!

The Colorado Avalanche won't have to hear about those 2nd Round demons anymore, or that Game 5 meltdown. The Avalanche had to go into St. Louis and win for the third time on their ice to close out the series. But it wasn't without theatrics. In another game that saw the Avalanche in control for the majority of the game yet again, but also trailing heading into the 3rd period, the Avs had to do what St. Louis did in Game 5 and mount a comeback. Boy did they.
The depth was the star last night. JT Compher, who hadn't scored a goal all playoffs, found the net twice. But the biggest one was off-season acquisition Darren Helm sending home past Ville Husso with a mere five seconds remaining to seal the victory and the series for the Avalanche.
Now the Avalanche can celebrate moving on to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in 20 years as they will face the Edmonton Oilers.

Game 6 cannot come fast enough for the Colorado Avalanche and the fans. The best way to put the events of Game 5 out of our memory is for a solid performance in the very next game. This Avalanche team can accomplish that. Are changes needed? Is Darcy still the guy in net? How much blame is on Bednar?
Of everything this Avalanche team has been through, injuries, COVID, all those second round exits. All of it is piled on to the mountain of motivation.
Chris and Kyle get to all this and more to get you ready for Game 6 while trying our best to forget about Game 5.

It was right there. In their hands. And the Colorado Avalanche let the Western Conference Finals slip away, at least for a game. While still leading the series 3-2, one can't help but wonder if the hockey gods are playing jokes on the Avs to get past the second round.
You could not have asked for a better start. For the first time in the series the Avalanche scored first and they kept the pressure on in scoring the the first three goals of the game. But St. Louis played like their season was on the line, because lets face it, it was. The Blues started to chip away at the Avs lead and eventually caught up to them to tie it at 3. But then Nathan MacKinnon went full beast mode to score with only a few minutes left. But with less than a minute to go and the goalie pulled, St. Louis found the net again to send it into OT where then would eventually get the game winner.
No doubt this will stings. But the Avs will have to forget it as soon as possible and look at the positives. Like the two games you already played in St. Louis, you won.

The NHLPA came out and issued a statement regarding the comments of the St. Louis Blues fan base towards Nazem Kadri and his family. It's what you would expect from a sports league or a players union. It's also what you would expect from individual teams. Which is why it remains shocking that the St. Louis Blues, as of this recording, have yet to make a sound about what their fans are saying to Kadri. It's shameful.
David Perron was fined $5k for his cross-check hit on Kadri, but nothing beyond that, One could argue there could have been two more fines coming the way of Perron for his attempt to connect his elbow to Kadri's head after a Kadri goal, and for spear on Devon Toews.
The Avalanche will look to shut the door on the Blues season tonight in Denver and get beyond that dreaded second round. Will there be any changes to the lineup. Chris and Kyle don't think so.

This is what makes sports so great. Nazem Kadri had a rough 24 hour period, where the worst of the worst emerged to sit down at their keyboards and throw horrible racists comments towards Kadri, blaming him as the reason Jordan Binnington will miss the rest of the 2nd Round. Kadri waited for his chance to respond and that response came on the ice where finished with a four point night including a hat trick. A lot still needs to be done off the ice to curb the people who feel they have the right to say these things towards an athlete, and a human being. But on the ice, at least for last night, it was Kadri's night.
Kadri helped his Colorado Avalanche to a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Blues and now take a commanding 3-1 lead back to Denver to try and finish off the Blues and get the Avalanche out of the dreaded 2nd round. Right now, things are looking great for the Avs, but nobody is taking this for granted. We can assure you of that.
