Locked On Baylor - Daily Podcast on Baylor Bears Football & Basketball

Baylor has made the decision to retain Blake Shapen as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season. Coach Dave Aranda confirmed this choice after a spring competition that involved Sawyer Robertson, a transfer from Mississippi State.

Shapen secured the starting position in the previous spring and maintained it throughout a challenging 2022 season. Despite ups and downs, he completed 63.3% of his passes, accumulating 2,790 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Baylor, the reigning Big 12 champion, ended the season with a 6-7 overall record and 4-5 in conference play.

Hailing from Shreveport, Louisiana, Shapen emerged as a talented freshman in 2021, impressing with 596 passing yards and five touchdowns. He outperformed the incumbent starter, Gerry Bohanon, during the spring competition, prompting Bohanon to transfer to South Florida.

Shapen exhibited a strong start, delivering seven touchdowns and only one interception in the initial four games, showcasing his accuracy. However, he encountered challenges in Big 12 play, with three games featuring multiple interceptions, and he failed to surpass 270 passing yards in his last seven games.

Sawyer Robertson, ranked 56th overall in ESPN's 2021 class, saw action in five games for Mississippi State last season. Aranda acknowledged Robertson's progress during spring practice but ultimately decided that Shapen had earned the right to retain the starting role.

The possibility of Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Washington, and Oregon joining the Big 12 has been a topic of speculation in recent years. While no official announcement has been made, there are several reasons why these schools could potentially be interested in joining the conference.

Firstly, the Big 12 has historically been one of the major conferences in college athletics, alongside the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, and Pac-12. The conference has a strong football reputation, with Oklahoma and Texas being two of the most successful programs in the country. By joining the Big 12, schools from the Pac-12 like Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Washington, and Oregon could potentially increase their national exposure and improve their competitiveness in football.

Secondly, the recent news of Oklahoma and Texas leaving the Big 12 for the SEC has left the conference in need of new members. While there are no confirmed plans for expansion, it's possible that the conference will look to add new schools in order to maintain its status as a power conference. Schools from the Pac-12 could be attractive candidates for the Big 12, as they would bring in new markets and potentially strengthen the conference's overall profile.

Once upon a time in the small town of Branson, there lived a talented young basketball player named Tre Johnson. Trey had always possessed an incredible passion for the game and dreamed of playing at the highest level. He spent countless hours honing his skills on the outdoor courts, dribbling and shooting under the watchful eye of his father, who had been a college basketball player himself.

Tre's hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed. As he entered high school, he became a star player for the basketball team, leading them to multiple championships. His talent attracted the attention of college scouts from across the country. One evening, as Tre sat nervously at his kitchen table, contemplating his future, the phone rang. It was Coach Scott Drew from Baylor University, one of the most prestigious basketball programs in the nation.

Coach Drew expressed his admiration for Tre's skills and offered him a full scholarship to play for the Baylor Bears. Overjoyed and filled with gratitude, Trey accepted the offer without hesitation. It was a dream come true for him, and he knew that Baylor would be the perfect place to continue his basketball journey.

Former Baylor football player Tyler Jaynes explains how Baylor's NIL is behind the punch, and he dives deep into a Twitter conversation he had with BU's Jovan Overshown. This discussion tells all.

NIL in college sports stands for Name, Image, and Likeness. It refers to the rights of college athletes to profit from their own names, images, and likenesses while they are still enrolled as student-athletes.

Previously, NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) rules prohibited college athletes from receiving compensation beyond scholarships and other limited benefits. This meant that athletes were unable to earn money from endorsements, sponsorships, or other commercial opportunities related to their athletic abilities or public persona.

However, in recent years, there has been a shift in the rules governing college sports. On July 1, 2021, several U.S. states enacted legislation that granted college athletes the right to profit from their NIL. This means that athletes can now sign endorsement deals, engage in commercial activities, and monetize their social media presence while still being a part of college sports.

When the Utah Jazz were on the clock for the 16th overall pick on Thursday night, they were fully aware of their plan.

Keyonte George from Baylor had impressed the Jazz and had been ranked in their top 10, so it was a stroke of luck that he was still available at the 16th spot. The Jazz front office felt fortunate, and George himself felt equally blessed when he learned he was headed to Utah.

"It's like a dream come true," George expressed with tears of joy. "Throughout this process, Utah was one of the destinations I really liked. So, when I heard Utah call my name... There's an overwhelming rush of emotions, all positive. I'm just thrilled."

What stands out the most about George for the Jazz is his potential to develop into a versatile NBA guard capable of contributing in various aspects of the game. He exhibits great skill and creativity when handling the ball, remaining composed even when faced with defensive pressure. On the contrary, George puts immense pressure on opposing defenses through his exceptional ball handling and ability to create space for himself.

George is determined to generate the best scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates. He excels at taking smart shots from the perimeter and attacking the rim with confidence, finishing with finesse using both hands and fearlessly embracing contact to draw fouls and convert at the free-throw line.

a topic of debate since their inclusion. While some argue that their inclusion strengthens the conference, there are valid concerns and reasons to believe that these additions may have been unfavorable for the Big 12.

One of the primary concerns is the lack of historical success and tradition associated with Houston and UCF in terms of their football programs. Traditionally, the Big 12 has been home to schools with strong football legacies such as Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas A&M. These schools have a rich history of success, large fan bases, and a strong following across the country. On the other hand, Houston and UCF, while experiencing some recent success, do not have the same level of tradition and historical significance. This lack of tradition may lead to a decreased interest in their games and a potential decline in the overall quality of competition within the conference.

Additionally, Houston and UCF are located in markets that already have established Power Five conference teams. Houston is situated in close proximity to the University of Texas and Texas A&M, two of the biggest college football programs in the country. This overlap in market presence may lead to a dilution of the fan base and could result in reduced support for the Big 12 within the Houston area. Similarly, UCF is located in Florida, a state with three existing Power Five programs (Florida, Florida State, and Miami). Adding UCF to the Big 12 may not provide any significant benefits in terms of expanding the conference's geographical footprint or increasing its exposure to new markets.

According to CBS Sports, "West Virginia coach Bob Huggins has resigned as Mountaineers men's basketball coach after he was arrested Friday night in Pittsburgh for driving under the influence of alcohol. Huggins, who informed the team of his impending resignation Saturday night, intends to retire.

WVU president E. Gordon Gee and athletic director Wren Baker released a joint statement on Huggins: "We support his decision so that he can focus on his health and family. On behalf of West Virginia University, we share our appreciation for his service to our University, our community and our state. During his time as a student-athlete, assistant coach and head coach, Coach Huggins devoted himself to his players, to our student body, to our fans and alumni and to all West Virginians. His contributions will always be a part of our history. In the days ahead, we will focus on supporting the student-athletes in our men's basketball program and solidifying leadership for our program."

Huggins, 69, is one of the biggest figures in college basketball with two Final Fours and more than four decades of coaching to his name. Until his ouster, he was the active leader in Division I wins (934) as his head-coaching career dated back to Walsh College in 1980. Huggins was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022, an achievement many in the basketball community considered long overdue, even in spite of Huggins never reaching the national championship game."

power forward Jalen Bridges has made the decision to return to Baylor and continue playing for Scott Drew and the Bears during his senior season.

This news brings great satisfaction to Drew and the 2023-24 Baylor Men's Basketball team, as Bridges had been contemplating various options, including the possibility of playing professionally in the Australian NBL. Ultimately, he chose to remain at Baylor.

Bridges now stands as the sole returning starter from last year's tournament team, and he proved to be a consistent threat throughout the Big 12 play, especially during the crucial moments of the season.

After an impressive freshman year at West Virginia, Bridges experienced a decline in performance during his sophomore season. However, he took advantage of the one-time transfer waiver and decided to join Baylor in Waco, playing under Drew's guidance.
