Locked On Baylor - Daily Podcast on Baylor Bears Football & Basketball

The possibility of Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Washington, and Oregon joining the Big 12 has been a topic of speculation in recent years. While no official announcement has been made, there are several reasons why these schools could potentially be interested in joining the conference.

Firstly, the Big 12 has historically been one of the major conferences in college athletics, alongside the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, and Pac-12. The conference has a strong football reputation, with Oklahoma and Texas being two of the most successful programs in the country. By joining the Big 12, schools from the Pac-12 like Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Washington, and Oregon could potentially increase their national exposure and improve their competitiveness in football.

Secondly, the recent news of Oklahoma and Texas leaving the Big 12 for the SEC has left the conference in need of new members. While there are no confirmed plans for expansion, it's possible that the conference will look to add new schools in order to maintain its status as a power conference. Schools from the Pac-12 could be attractive candidates for the Big 12, as they would bring in new markets and potentially strengthen the conference's overall profile.

In a significant addition to their roster, the Baylor Bears have secured the commitment of highly touted four-star quarterback Adam Schobel for the class of 2025. Schobel made the decision to join head coach Dave Aranda and the Baylor program, passing on offers from several other schools, including Oklahoma State, Houston, Sam Houston State, Texas State, and UTSA. In a recent announcement on Twitter, local tight end Greydon Grimes has committed to the Baylor Bears for the 2024 season. The 6'6" and 235-pound athlete, who currently attends China Spring High School in China Spring, TX, will bring his skills as both a tight end and defensive end to the team. Grimes had received offers from various schools including Abilene Christian, Houston Baptist, Louisiana, North Texas, Sam Houston State, Texas State, and UTSA, but ultimately chose Baylor. With an impressive athletic profile, Grimes has showcased his abilities with a 4.80-second 40-yard dash, a 35" vertical, and an impressive 450-pound deadlift. Interestingly, Grimes is the son of Baylor's offensive coordinator and tight ends coach, Jeff Grimes, making his commitment to the program a natural choice. His decision marks the sixth commitment for Baylor's 2024 recruiting class.

RayJ Dennis, the reigning MAC Player of the Year, confirmed to ESPN that he will be transferring from Toledo to Baylor. The 6-foot-2 guard, widely regarded as one of the top talents in the men's basketball transfer portal, made his decision after considering offers from Illinois, Michigan, and Utah.

Dennis cited the perfect fit and Coach Scott Drew's exceptional track record with guards as key factors in his choice. He also highlighted the character and qualities of the people within the Baylor program.

Last season, Dennis showcased his skills by averaging an impressive 19.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 5.8 assists, leading Toledo to a remarkable 27-8 record and securing the Mid-American Conference regular-season championship. The Rockets enjoyed a 17-game winning streak before falling in the conference tournament title game to Kent State. Dennis consistently scored in double figures throughout the season.

Baylor has made the decision to retain Blake Shapen as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season. Coach Dave Aranda confirmed this choice after a spring competition that involved Sawyer Robertson, a transfer from Mississippi State.

Shapen secured the starting position in the previous spring and maintained it throughout a challenging 2022 season. Despite ups and downs, he completed 63.3% of his passes, accumulating 2,790 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Baylor, the reigning Big 12 champion, ended the season with a 6-7 overall record and 4-5 in conference play.

Hailing from Shreveport, Louisiana, Shapen emerged as a talented freshman in 2021, impressing with 596 passing yards and five touchdowns. He outperformed the incumbent starter, Gerry Bohanon, during the spring competition, prompting Bohanon to transfer to South Florida.

Shapen exhibited a strong start, delivering seven touchdowns and only one interception in the initial four games, showcasing his accuracy. However, he encountered challenges in Big 12 play, with three games featuring multiple interceptions, and he failed to surpass 270 passing yards in his last seven games.

Sawyer Robertson, ranked 56th overall in ESPN's 2021 class, saw action in five games for Mississippi State last season. Aranda acknowledged Robertson's progress during spring practice but ultimately decided that Shapen had earned the right to retain the starting role.

Once upon a time, in a parallel universe where college sports took unexpected turns, a seismic shift was about to rock the world of collegiate athletics. In a surprising turn of events, the University of North Carolina (UNC), North Carolina State University (NC State), Florida State University, the University of Miami, the University of Louisville, Duke University, and several other prominent ACC schools were rumored to be considering a move to the Big 12 Conference.

It all began when the Big 12 Conference found itself facing numerous challenges. Financial disparities, declining viewership, and a growing sense of stagnation plagued the conference. Seeking a revitalization, the Big 12's commissioner, let's call him Commissioner Smith, set out on a mission to bolster the conference's status and ensure its long-term sustainability.

Commissioner Smith reached out to the leadership of various ACC schools, sensing an opportunity for a seismic realignment. Intrigued by the potential benefits, the ACC schools cautiously entertained the idea. Secret meetings were held in undisclosed locations, where university presidents, athletic directors, and influential boosters gathered to discuss the possibilities.
