The Cleveland Browns fired Joe Woods on Black Monday. On this episode of The Locked On Browns Podcast we discuss 5 possible candidates to replace Joe Woods as the Browns defensive coordinators we're considering. As the Browns prepare for their next season, it's important to keep an eye on the defensive coordinator position. With Joe Woods now fired, it's time for the team to look for a new coordinator. In this video, we're discussing 5 possible candidates to replace Joe Woods as the Browns defensive coordinator. Stay tuned for more updates!
1. EJIRO EVERO – DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, DENVER BRONCOS
Evero is already a Defensive Coordinator with the Denver Broncos, but it looks like Head Coach Nathanial Hackett is unlikely to see a second season. This would leave Evero looking for a job unless the Broncos hire him as their next Head Coach. Evero has been one of the only bright spots in Denver this year, heading up the 4th ranked defense in DVOA. Evero is widely regarded as a rising star in the NFL at 41-years-old.
2. MIKE ZIMMER - CONSULTANT, JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY
Mike Zimmer was Head Coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 2014-2021; Stefanski was on his staff for six seasons. In 2018, Stefanski was promoted to interim Offensive Coordinator and later named the full-time Offensive Coordinator. Zimmer is 66 years old and served as a consultant for one of his favorite former players, Deion Sanders, at Jackson State University this season.
3. JIM SCHWARTZ - SENIOR DEFENSIVE ASSISTANT, TENNESSEE TITANS
Jim Schwartz is now in his 12th season with the Titans and his 29th in the NFL. After eight years on the staff as a defensive coordinator (1999-2008), he returned to the team in 2021 as a senior defensive assistant. Schwartz has been a defensive coordinator in the NFL for 14 years and was a head coach for the Detroit Lions for four years (2009-13). In addition, Schwartz worked for the Philadelphia Eagles as their defensive coordinator from 2016 until 2020, helping them win a Super Bowl in 2017.
4. ERIC WASHINGTON – SENIOR DEFENSIVE ASSISTANT/DEFENSIVE LINE, BUFFALO BILLS
Eric Washington joined the Bills in 2020 as the team's defensive line coach and was promoted to senior defensive assistant/defensive line coach before the start of the 2022 season. In Washington's first season with the Bills, they went to the AFC Championship game, and in his second season, he helped lead a defense that ranked first in the NFL in the fewest points allowed per game (17.0) for the first time in franchise history. In 2018, Washington led the Panthers' defense from 28th to 12th in interceptions, 32nd to 13th in passes defended, and 18th to 9th in tackles for loss. Washington reunited with McDermott in Buffalo after Rivera was fired from the Panthers.
5. JIM LEONHARD - INTERIM HEAD COACH, UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN
Jim Leonhard is one of the top defensive minds in the college game. He went 4-3 as the interim Head Coach of the Wisconsin Badgers, replacing Paul Chryst halfway through the season. Still, Wisconsin has elected to hire Luke Fickell as their new head coach. Over the last five seasons running the Badger defense, he led them to top five in total defense five times and top 10 in scoring defense four times.

In this episode of the SECRETS Behind the Beef Between Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney, we talk about Clowney's comments towards Kevin Stefanski, Myles Garrett, and Joe Woods. Clowney was sit home after he voiced his frustration with the defensive scheme in Cleveland. We also discuss Joe Woods Brown's and whether he will be fired at the end of the year. We give predictions for Cleveland Browns vs Pittsburgh Steelers. Don't miss this episode of the SECRETS Behind the Beef, where we reveal the secrets behind the drama between the two stars of the Cleveland NFL sports scene. Tune in to find out what's really going on!
Myles Garrett said Friday that he was "disappointed" and "a little bit confused" by comments from fellow defensive end Jadeveon Clowney that prompted the Cleveland Browns to send Clowney home before Friday's practice.
"I knew he was frustrated. We've all been frustrated; we're not winning," Garrett said. "I wish we could've talked about this man-to-man. ... I wish he would have handled it a little bit differently." On Thursday, Clowney told Cleveland.com that he was "95 percent sure" he would not be re-signing with the Browns, in large part because he believes the team has favored Garrett over him.
Clowney did not play on the opening series the next weekend on "Monday Night Football" against the Cincinnati Bengals, although he entered the game on Cincinnati's second possession. Garrett said he didn't even realize Clowney was refusing to play on first or second down against Baltimore until the next week. "I assumed he was hurt," Garrett said. "I just assumed something was holding him back."
Clowney has had a disappointing second season for the 7-9 Browns, who were eliminated from the AFC playoff picture two weeks ago. After racking up nine sacks with the Browns last season, Clowney has only two sacks this year. He also sat four games with ankle and concussion injuries.
Clowney is a free agent again this offseason, having signed back-to-back one-year deals with the Browns. Garrett, meanwhile, has a team-high 15 sacks, fourth-most in the NFL, and was named to a fourth Pro Bowl. Garrett also has faced the highest double-team rate (31.3%) of any edge rusher in the league this season. Despite that, he's second among edge rushers in pass rush win rate (27.8%); Clowney's pass rush win rate is just 16.5%.

Deshaun Watson continues to improve on a weekly basis. The Cleveland QB had a strong game in Week 17. He completed 9-of-18 passes for 169 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Despite attempting the fewest passes of the season, Watson was highly efficient. He averaged 9.4 yards per attempt. This was also his first multi-touchdown performance of the season, with touchdowns thrown from distances of 46, 13, and 33 yards.
The Cleveland Browns already eliminated the Washington Commanders from playoff contention last week. They can eliminate another team this coming weekend if they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 18 on the road. The Steelers need this win to stay alive for a playoff berth, but the Browns would be all too happy to kick their division rivals out of contention.
Keep in mind that the Browns and Steelers have a longstanding rivalry. That’s despite Cleveland’s history of struggles on the field. Remember also that in the recent past, Cleveland has managed to secure a playoff spot thanks to the Steelers and even defeated Pittsburgh in the playoffs.
However, this year, the tables have turned. Now, it’s the Steelers who need to win against Cleveland in the final week of the season. Aside from that, Pittsburgh also needs both the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins to lose their games so the Steelers can make it to the playoffs.
Additionally, Pittsburgh’s head coach, Mike Tomlin, has a streak of winning seasons on the line. That said, Cleveland has the opportunity to end their season on a high note by kicking a rival out of playoff contention and ending Tomlin’s streak.

The Bills took the day off and were unsure when they might resume practicing, putting Hamlin above everything else, including their quest to clinch the AFC’s top seed.
The NFL’s schedule is now in flux after the game between Buffalo (12-3) and Cincinnati (11-4) — a showdown with AFC playoff race implications — was postponed indefinitely.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed both teams that their game would not resume this week. No decision has been made on whether it will be played at a later date, with the league not making any changes to its Week 18 schedule, a week before the playoffs are set to begin.
Numerous NFL teams canceled their media availabilities, including the New England Patriots, who are scheduled to travel to Buffalo for the teams’ season finales on Sunday.
“Please pray for our brother,” quarterback Josh Allen posted in a tweet.
Added offensive lineman Rodger Saffold: “He is more than an athlete. He is a son and brother. And I pray God gives him mercy and brings him back to us.”
Hamlin is from McKees Rocks, a hardscrabble exurb of Pittsburgh, and was selected by Buffalo in the sixth round of the 2021 draft. He spent his rookie season limited to special teams roles, and took over the starting job in Week 3 in place of veteran Micah Hyde, who remains sidelined by a neck injury.
Overnight, Hamlin went from being a relatively unknown second-year player to receiving an international outpouring of support.
His Chasing M’s Foundation eclipsed its modest goal of raising $2,500, exceeding $5 million by Tuesday evening.
The Bills now face perhaps their most difficult hurdle in a calendar year filled with on- and off-field adversity. The team has seen its schedule disrupted twice by major snowstorms in the past month, including a blizzard that led to at least 40 deaths in the region over Christmas. The Bills also rallied to support the community in the aftermath of a racist shooting rampage that left 10 dead at a Buffalo supermarket in May.
On Tuesday, it was the region’s turn to rally for the team on both sides of the New York-Ontario border.
The Ontario-based Niagara Parks commission announced it will illuminate Niagara Falls in blue in honor of Hamlin.
“Our collective thoughts are with him, his family, his team and the City of Buffalo,” the commission wrote.

Deshaun Watson gave Browns fans a sneak preview of the future Sunday against the Commanders, and the future looks bright. On a sunny, 62-degree day at FedEx Field, Watson threw three touchdown passes in the second half to secure a 24-10 victory over the Commanders and improve the Browns to 7-9. Both quarterbacks struggled in the first half. Watson went 3-of-8 for 23 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions for a 45.8 rating. Wentz went 6-of-10 for 62 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions for a 38.3 rating. Watson was also sacked four times, and Wentz once. The Commanders, who needed a victory to maintain a realistic shot at the playoffs, dropped to 7-8-1.Nick Chubb was dominant on the ground for the Browns but that's it. Literally it. On offense, the Commanders defensive line dominated and there wasn't much to get excited about on offense for the Browns.
Watson, who made some sensational throws in last week’s 17-10 victory over the Saints despite minus-16 wind chills and 30 mph wind gusts to leave the Browns encouraged, flourished on the gorgeous day here. He had two touchdown passes to Amari Cooper (3-of-4 targets for 105 yards, 2 TDs) and one to Donovan Peoples-Jones (1-of-3 targets, 13 yards, 1 TD). Watson finished 9 of 18 for 169 yards, three TDs, and a 122.5 rating. Next, The Browns close out their season Saturday or Sunday in Pittsburgh. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

A controversial Report written by longtime Cleveland Browns beat reporter Toni Grossi blames Paul Depodesta And Analytics For Cleveland Browns Lack Of Success. Grossi points to the Browns overuse of analytics as a reason why the Browns are currently 6-9 and have been officially eliminated from playoff contention. An example pointed to the Browns throwing the football 31 times in horrible weather in a loss to the New Orleans Saints on Christmas Eve. The report also takes a deep dive into the the Browns analytics philosophy and goes as far as saying that DePodesta's formulas for winning don't value runs under 5 yards.
In this controversial report, Toni Grossi of thelandondemand.com singles out Paul Depodesta and Analytics as a major reason the Browns have struggled under Head Coach Kevin Stefanski the last 2 seasons. Jeff Lloyd and Garrett Bush of The Locked on Browns podcast debate if Depodesta is really to blame for the Cleveland Browns lack of success. Kevin Stefanski on Myles Garrett sitting out first series: "That was my decision." As the Cleveland Browns fell short against the New Orleans Saints on Christmas Eve, one of the more bizarre situations happened. Coming off of a terrorizing performance against the Baltimore Ravens, defensive end and Pro Bowler Myles Garrett was not on the field for the opening possession of the game. When asked about it by the media, head coach Kevin Stefanski remained tight-lipped on the matter, stating:
“That was just a team thing. That was my decision.” He would not go into further detail. Garrett missed practice throughout the week with an illness, so he could have just been on a pitch count. Regardless, it was odd to see him sit out that very first series.

The Browns gave their frozen fans nothing but a lump of coal on Christmas Eve with a 17-10 loss to the Saints at frozen FirstEnergy Stadium after leading 10-0 in the second quarter. The loss dropped the Browns to 6-9 and eliminated them playoff contention once and for all. The Saints improved to 6-9 to keep their playoff hopes alive. Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson struggled in the frigid conditions, completing 15-of-31 attempts for 135 yards with no touchdowns and one interception for a 47.1 rating. He went ice-cold in the second half.
Nick Chubb rushed for 92 yards, but it wasn’t enough, as the Browns failed to score in the second half. Trailing 17-10, Watson took over at his 20 with 5:16 left and all three timeouts remaining. He shook off a sack and hit Amari Cooper with a 14-yard pass to the Saints 33 and the David Bell with an 18-yarder to the 15. But Watson threw three straight incompletions -- one pass to Cooper, and drops by Donovan Peoples-Jones and tight end David Njoku in the end zone -- and was sacked on fourth down to end the game. Watson struggled to hit his mark amid the fierce winds whipping off the lake, with gusts of more than 30 mph. Temperature at kickoff was 6 degrees, making it the coldest game in Browns history. Windchill made it feel like minus-16.
