Locked On Bruins - Daily Podcast On The Boston Bruins

Three names have emerged as early candidates for the Boston Bruins head coach position: Jay Leach, Nate Leaman, and Jim Montgomery.

Host Ian McLaren discusses all three options, and updates the teams reportedly interested in Bruce Cassidy.

Plus. Ian continues his summer series on Don Sweeney's trade history, focusing on the 2018 trade deadline and the acquisition of Rick Nash.

And the Stanley Cup Final is set between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Colorado Avalanche, and the New York Rangers might have some players that interest the Bruins in free agency.

Bruce Cassidy wanted to keep coaching the Boston Bruins, and was told everything was "status quo" heading into the offseason.

Host Ian McLaren breaks down Cassidy's comments from a zoom call with the media on Thursday, and discusses what changed over the past couple weeks and who's really to blame for the still baffling decision to let him go.

Don't expect Cassidy to be out of work for long. He's already been talking to several teams.

One of those clubs is the Chicago Blackhawks, who seem to be on the verge of a full rebuild. Hopefully the Bruins aren't there yet, but a lot hinges on David Pastrnak.

There's been some troubling reports emerging in the aftermath of the Bruce Cassidy firing, and at the top of the list is the notion that David Pastrnak will not sign a contract extension as long as Don Sweeney remains general manager.

Host Ian McLaren digs into the report from The Athletic's Fluto Shinzawa, how it became such a hot topic on Twitter, and the rebuttal from Pastrnak's agent.

Still, until a deal is signed, there will be question marks.

Also, how does the Cassidy firing affect Patrice Bergeron's decision to come back, and will he delay it until later in the year to see how the Bruins manage the early stages of the regular season under a new head coach and amid several key injuries?

By recommending and executing the dismissal of head coach Bruce Cassidy, Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney has put himself next in the firing line.

Sweeney was firm in his belief that ownership is committed to winning, and seeing as GMs only get so many coaching hires, any futures failures will be pinned squarely on his shoulders.

And rightfully so, says host Ian McLaren, who maintains Cassidy should not have been scapegoated.

On today's episode, a look at Sweeney's comments to the media following Cassidy's dismissal, and some early odd on the next head coach of the Boston Bruins.

Plus, a quick update on Patrice Begreron and David Pastrnak (with more to come tomorrow).

The Boston Bruins fired head coach Bruce Cassidy on Monday after a fairly successful regular season and a Game 7 loss to the widely favored Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the playoffs.

The reasoning? According to general manager Don Sweeney, the team needs a "new voice" and there was a perceived lack of belief in certain young players.

Host Ian McLaren discusses this somewhat baffling decision, arguing Cassidy is a scapegoat for Boston's inability to draft the best available talent and questionable free agent signings during his tenure.

Boston Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron won his record-breaking 5th Selke Trophy Award as the NHL's best defensive forward.

The humble 36-year-old credited teammates and coaches for the win, while reiterating he's taking some time to think about his playing future.

Either he continues playing at this high level, or he goes out at the top of his game.

Bergeron revealed he had surgery on his left elbow last week. He joins Charlie McAvoy, Matt Grzelcyk, Mike Reilly, and Brad Marchand on the recovery list.

Host Ian McLaren discusses all the injuries and begins to look ahead to what it might mean for 2022-23.

Is David Krejci seriously thinking about returning to the Boston Bruins?

In a tweet posted by his Czech club HC Olomouc, Krejci said "Today I'm flying to the USA, I'll have another beer on the way to celebrate the bronze and then I'll be calmly thinking what to do next. There is plenty of time and a lot of possibilities, one of which is very real and the continuation of the Olomouc jersey."

One would assume black and gold is one of those possibilities as well.

Plus, Joona Koppanen signed a one-year deal, and there could be some intriguing young players on the market if they're not qualified by their current teams.

Continuing a look back at Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney's trade history.

Today, host Ian McLaren reflects on small splashes made at the 2016 and 2017 NHL trade deadlines, with mixed results.

As Team Czechia celebrated a bronze medal win with a beer tour in Prague on Tuesday, David Pastrnak asked David Krejci if he would be returning to the Boston Bruins next season.

Krejci's response: a smile. What does it mean?? Host Ian McLaren breaks it down, and looks back at Krejci's comments about head coach Bruce Cassidy not putting he and Pastrnak on the same line.

Plus, Jake DeBrusk posted a story holding a baby in Bruins gear, which seems positive with respect to his trade request possibly being negated.
