Locked On Bruins - Daily Podcast On The Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins appear close to naming a new head coach as David Quinn reportedly met with ownership over the weekend.

Host Ian McLaren looks at why he's the leading candidate in the eyes of soon-to-be-extended general manager Don Sweeney, and what went wrong during Quinn's tenure as head coach of the New York Rangers.

It won't be a popular hire, but his coaching philosophy paired with a relationship with Charlie McAvoy and Matt Grzelcyk could be good for the Bruins, provided he's learned from missteps in the Big Apple.

Plus, the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup, but don't expect the Tampa Bay Lightning to fade into the night.

Boston Bruins captain and Selke Trophy winner Patrice Bergeron is expected to sign a one-year deal to remain with the club for at least the 2022-23 season.

Despite the first-round loss, the Bruins had a strong start to 2022, and it looks like they're going to run it back, albeit with a new bench boss.

Bergeron's status was a huge question mark for the Bruins this summer, and we can expect a Don Sweeney extension, a head coach hire, and some lineup refinement to follow.

Plus, the Stanley Cup could be awarded tonight!

Continuing a look back at Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney's NHL Entry Draft history.

In 2017, he selected Urho Vaakanainen directly ahead of a trio of future top 6 centers. Sweeney did, however, flip the young defenseman this year in a package for Hampus Lindholm.

The jury is still out on 2nd round pick Jack Studnicka, who's a restricted free agent without a clear role on the team.

The big win was in the 4th round and the selection of potential franchise goalie Jeremy Swayman.

The rest of the draft was a bit of a write off.

Plus, controversy in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, Andrew Brunette given a raw deal in Florida, and Pierre-Luc Dubois should be a target if available.

Jeremy Swayman and Charlie McAvoy earned some love in the NHL Awards voting.

The Boston Bruins' goalie was named to the NHL's All-Rookie team and finished 5th in Calder Trophy voting, while McAvoy finished 4th in Norris Trophy voting.

Host Ian McLaren wonder who'll be the next Bruins player to win a major NHL Award. Another Richard Trophy for David Pastrnak? A Norris for McAvoy? Swayman or Linus Ullmark for the Vezina? Fabian Lysell as rookie of the year? Another Selke Trophy for Patrice Bergeron?

Plus, Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final goes tonight, the Vancouver Canucks might have a couple tantalizing players to offer in trades this offseason. and what to do with RFA Jack Studnicka?

It's Part 2 of a look back at Don Sweeney's draft history, focusing on 2016 and the Boston Bruins adding a franchise defenseman in Charlie McAvoy.

The Bruins also added a promising winger in Oskar Steen late in the draft, but definitely flubbed their second 1st-round pick by taking Trent Frederic over Jordan Kyrou or Alex DeBrincat.

They, and every other team, also left a Norris Trophy winner on the table.

Plus, what's going on with Sweeney's expected contract extension? Are the Bruins waiting until the Bruce Cassidy anger dies down?

And the Bruins should definitely be interested in Ethan Bear if the Carolina Hurricanes make him available.

After wrapping up a series on Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney's trade history, host Ian McLaren turns to the NHL Entry Draft.

The 2015 Draft is a major strike against Sweeney, and the picks made and not made still haunt the Bruins.

Looking back, though, Jakub Zboril and Jake DeBrusk were properly rated and should still be good pieces for the team moving forward.

But aside from Brandon Carlo, there were no core pieces added with 6 picks in the first 2 rounds, and some serious star power was left on the table.

Plus, an update on the search for the next head coach.

Continuing a look back at Don Sweeney's trade history by revisiting the 2019 and 2020 NHL trade deadlines.

The Boston Bruins acquired some key players (Charlie Coyle, Marcus Johansson) that helped them advance to the Stanley Cup Final in 2019, while their deals with the Anaheim Ducks in 2020 provided lesser results within the context of the Covid-19 playoff bubble.

Getting rid of the David Backes contract was a win, but that 2020 1st round pick would be handy right about now.

Plus, host Ian McLaren makes a Colorado Avalanche-Tampa Bay Lightning Final prediction.
