Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Scott and Laura take a short break from trying to steal Patrik Laine from the Winnipeg Jets to welcome European Prospect Correspondent Patrik Bexell to the show!

The hosts and Patrik take a look at the overall quality of the Canadiens' European prospects now that Alexander Romanov has headed to North America. They'll also discuss the temporary loans to Sweden and Finland, and how it could give players like Lukas Vejdemo an advantage heading into training camp in the fall.

In the second segment Patrik discusses his expectations for Mattias Norlinder in Frolunda, and how their coaching staff is preparing him for a potential NHL career. Patrik also shares his insight into what Jesse Ylonen can bring to the Laval Rocket lineup next season, and why he's still a top prospect.

Finally the show discusses what lays ahead for Jacob Olofsson and Joni Ikonen, two prospects who have had their careers slowed down by injuries, and whether their future is still the NHL right now.

In today's episode, we are joined by Cara T of Arctic Ice Hockey to discuss whether Patrik Laine would be a good fit in Montreal (spoiler alert: yes), why he wouldn't be content in Winnipeg, and what kind of return the Winnipeg Jets would expect for him. What would the Montreal Canadiens be able to do with a finisher like Laine? What about a winger like Nikolaj Ehlers? And why isn't Kyle Connor on the block? All this and more in our sit down with Cara.

While it is Friday, and that means it's Mailbag Day, Scott and Laura have a few more thoughts on the Jake Allen trade. Namely that people were always going to criticize Marc Bergevin no matter what he did, and that the Habs had to take a risk to finally fill a major need.

Then, we read a listener letter about their Andrei Markov memories, so Scott and Laura once again delve into their Markov feelings.

Finally, it's a Cap Space bonanza in the Mailbag, including looking what happens if Jake Allen doesn't work, and what is a good destination for Max Domi?

The Montreal Canadiens traded for Jake Allen right as we were recording this episode with special guest Andrew Berkshire, contributor to Sportsnet and the Winnipeg Free Press. You get our real-time reaction to the trade before we go on to discuss Max Domi's trade value on the market, as well as his place on the Montreal Canadiens in the future. We also break down the Canadiens' strengths and weaknesses on defense and try to determine how good Ben Chiarot is on this team. We also get a lesson on Jeff Petry's play.

In the latest Locked on Canadiens, Scott mainly attempts to ruin the lives of Winnipeg Jets fans, and Laura tells a story of how she accidentally creeped on Andrei Markov!

But first, the hosts discuss NHL prospects being loaned to teams in Europe and what that might mean for the Habs and their players.

Geoff Molson and Marc Bergevin have both said they want to make sure Andrei Markov is honored properly this year, so Scott has a few thoughts on what that should entail. Plus both hosts reminisce about Markov's time as a Hab, and what made it so special.

Finally, the Winnipeg Jets may be willing to part with Patrik Laine or Nikolaj Ehlers, so Scott wants the Habs to trade for Laine(again). What does that deal look like, and what exactly are the Jets doing anyways?

After a somewhat quiet weekend in Montreal hockey news, Scott and Laura are back to talk about all the latest in the NHL world.

First up is the NCAA saying that players are allowed to leave for Junior A leagues if there's no NCAA hockey this year. They'll look at what this now means for Cole Caufield, and why it's not just as simple as putting him in Europe.

Also, the Coyotes got caught cheating so to speak and now lack a lot of draft picks, so how can the Montreal Canadiens use this to their advantage?

The Leafs and Penguins made a trade, so naturally everyone needs to know how trading Kasperi Kapanen impacts the Habs. More accurately how does it impact the potential return for the 16th overall pick in the upcoming NHL Draft.

Finally, Scott and Laura take a peak at the ongoing playoff series and experience various stages of smug satisfaction in certain team's misfortunes.

The Montreal Canadiens are continuing their end of season exit interviews, so Scott and Laura are here to dissect their words.

First up is the clean bill of health for head coach Claude Julien, and how his confirmed return behind the bench after these playoffs helps the Canadiens prepare for next season.

Then, with the sudden emergence of Nick Suzuki and Jesperi Kotkaniemi, where do Phillip Danault and Max Domi fit in the Habs lineup? Also, Danault said he doesn't want to be a "defence-only" player, and our hosts think that's Danault being too harsh, and that his role is not so easily defined.

Finally, Jeff Petry said the Canadiens' need to start scoring more regularly in the regular season if they want to have success, and it's hard to find a fault in that statement. So the question is, if so many veterans want to into "win-now" mode, does it change Marc Bergevin's approach to his rebuild?

Be sure to send in your mailbag questions for next episode as well!

In today's episode, we talk some more about the takeaways the Montreal Canadiens can take from their trip to the postseason. We first discuss how Brendan Gallagher played an entire series with a tear in his hip and the mentality that players feel they have to play with injuries because it's the playoffs. We then discuss the recent conversations between the NHL and the NHLPA about how the next regular season is going to work, with very preliminary ideas being discussed at this time. Finally, we move on to the future of Habs goaltending, with Carey Price showing that sufficient rest is the key to him retaining his level of play. The Canadiens will need a reliable backup goaltender who can take on up to 30 games a season, but we also explore the possibility that the Canadiens might want to give that time to Cayden Primeau.
