Inside the latest Locked on Canadiens

It has been a crazy few days around the NHL and your hosts have a mountain of content to sift through in today's show!

First up, former Habs captain Shea Weber was announced as one of the latest inductees into the Hockey Hall of Fame, despite still having two years left on his current NHL contract. Scott and Laura discuss his time in Montreal and the accolades that led to his induction. Scott also has A LOT of questions about some of the other inductees, which means it's time for a rant.

Speaking of big news though, the Florida Panthers are Stanley Cup champions for the first time in franchise history! Scott and Laura take a short victory lap for getting their Finals predictions right, and discuss what lessons could be learned from this series.

Finally, the Atlantic Division in the midst of the Panthers' celebration have decided to go buckwild in the trade market. The hosts discuss the moves made by the Red Wings, Senators and Bruins and how they might impact the Montreal Canadiens this upcoming season.

Inside the latest Locked on Canadiens

It's that time again folks, yes indeed.

The Habs are once again being linked to Martin Necas in the wake of the Pierre-Luc Dubois trade to Washington, with insiders reporting the Hurricanes want to make a "Hockey Trade".  Scott breaks down what they could possibly mean by that, and what potential pieces the Canadiens have that could fit the bill.

Speaking of trade pieces, the Winnipeg Jets appeared primed to lose prospect Rutger McGroarty in an upcoming trade as the rumours swirl that he has no intention of signing with the Jets. Scott takes a look at the package needed in that deal, and how McGroarty might perfectly fit the timeline for the Canadiens rebuild.

Finally, it's NHL Draft week!

How are we all feeling heading into the best time of year for hockey fans?

WE HAVE BREAKING NEWS

Laval Rocket head coach, JF Houle and the Montreal Canadiens have mutually agreed to part ways on Friday afternoon, with Houle opting to take a newly available job at Clarkson University. Scott dives into the reasons around the move, and also reflects back on the legacy Houle leaves behind after three years on the bench in Laval.

Also, who is going to coach the team now?

Scott dives into some of the top candidates who might be available and what the Canadiens might be looking for in their next coach. Pascal Vincent appears to be the leading candidate, but there appears to be a deep field of potential options, Scott goes over it all.

Finally, the preseason schedule has been released and Scott takes a look at the breakdown, and wonders how different the team might look by the start of their preseason games.

Scott welcomes Ian Boisvert of the Build Podcast to the show!

The duo tackles the impact of the Jacob Markstrom trade to the New Jersey Devils, and how it has a ripple effect on not one, but two different draft picks for the Montreal Canadiens.

Also, Pierre-Luc Dubois was traded...Again

Not to Montreal...Again.

Scott and Ian discuss the possible dodged bullet from last year, before also diving into what sort of fun Kent Hughes can have with a sudden uptick in moves around the league.

And speaking of Hughes, what exactly is he up to? Both hosts try their best to determine what his next move might be, and if we're all going to be in for a shock soon.

Inside the latest Locked on Canadiens

The off-season hot stove is slowly, but surely starting to heat up as buyout rumours abound with the Stanley Cup Final nearly at its end. With Jeff Skinner being one of the biggest names mentioned by Jeff Marek on Tuesday afternoon. If Skinner does end his perfectly cromulent run with the Sabres, could a short stay in Montreal help them round out the top six?

Speaking of big deals and possible buyouts, Filip Hronek cashed in on a monster eight-year extension with the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. With his deal being worth just over seven million dollars a year it brings the question up for the Habs, what does this mean for Mike Matheson's next contract?

To round out the show, Scott takes a look at David Savard's past season, and his time as a whole in Montreal while wondering if they can send the beloved veteran out on a high note.

Inside the latest Locked on Canadiens

Oliver Kapanen has officially signed his entry-level contract with the Montreal Canadiens and will be joining the team for camp in September! Scott breaks down his rise this season in Finland, while also explaining why Kapanen will not be a member of the Laval Rocket this year.

After that it's a pair of player reviews for two defencemen who are looking to truly stake their claim on a roster spot this upcoming season.

First up is Justin Barron, who has shown flashes of being a regular, everyday NHL defender in his time with Montreal. However he has shown some truly frustrating hiccups as he continues to develop parts of his game. Is Barron potentially the odd-man out with the sudden rise of Jayden Struble?

Lastly is Arber Xhekaj, arguably one of the most popular and somewhat polarizing players in the Habs system. After spending some time in the AHL this year it looked a lot like Xhekaj had turned the corner before another shoulder surgery shut him down for the season. Coming into contract discussions this year, has he done enough for a long-term extension?

Inside the latest Locked on Canadiens

Scott is back to tackle the latest rumour circling around the Montreal Canadiens this off-season, again centered around a former first round pick. Patrik Laine has requested a move out of Columbus, and after a tough season on and off the ice, his value might be at its lowest. Scott explores the potential options for a trade, and where Laine might might into a potential Habs lineup.

Then it's onto the season reviews!

First up is Joel Armia who had such a poor preseason that he was demoted to the AHL, before being recalled due to injuries and then finished the year on an incredible run of games. With just one year left on his contract, can Armia boost his value further heading into another Trade Deadline or are Habs fans in for another Jekyll and Hyde year?

Also on the review list is Rafaël Harvey-Pinard, who stormed onto the scene last year with an incredible 14 goals in 34 games, before injuries and poor luck limited him to just two goals this season. With this being the final year of his contract extension before he becomes an RFA again, can he find his form in the Canadiens bottom six?

Inside the latest Locked on Canadiens

We're just a few weeks from the NHL Draft, and for Montreal Canadiens fans there seem to be endless possibilities for the Habs. However, it's unclear which choice they're going to make, so Scott has devised the foolproof idea of a tier list.

We'll break down the different tiers, and which players slot into those, and whether or not the reaction will be kind to Kent Hughes and the Habs. Does Beckett Sennecke make the top tier? What happens if Ivan Demidov falls down the board and the Habs take a defender?

Tune in to find out!

Inside the latest Locked on Canadiens

It's been a chaotic off-season so far and the NHL Draft is three weeks away, and the Stanley Cup hasn't even been awarded yet. The biggest news recently however, is that CapFriendly is going dark after the Free Agent Frenzy comes to a close because they have been purchased by the Washington Capitals. Scott and Laura discuss the other options out there for replacing them, and why this move is a slap in the face to fans.

Also rumbling around the news, Ivan Demidov might be the next highly talented Russian player to tumble down the board on draft day, despite having piles of talent. The hosts discuss whether or not the Habs will contribute to that fall, or if they'll learned from their mistake last year with Matvei Michkov.

Finally, Free Agency is looming and the reports are starting to make it look like there's a lot bottom six forwards who could easily improve a lot of teams. Buyer beware however, as they might also becoming off career-defining seasons and come with a hefty price tag as well.
