Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

We're back after a few days off for the Christmas holiday!

Scott has your recap from the weekend with a big Habs win over the Chicago Blackhawks before the Christmas holiday. A 5-2 scoreline hides what was a tough start from the Canadiens against a bad Chicago team. Juraj Slafkovsky, Nick Suzuki and David Savard each had a goal and assist in the win. Also of note, Cayden Primeau remains undefeated on the road this season, an impressive feat for the young goalie.

Day 1 of the World Juniors tournament is also in the book, with four Habs prospects taking part in the first day of the tournament. Filip Mesar was instrumental in guiding Slovakia to a win over Czechia with a pair of primary assists. Meanwhile Owen Beck anchored Canada's best line in a hard-fought win over Finland. To round out the day, Lane Hutson and the United States survived a scare against Norway.

Finally, there has been a new debate amongst Habs fans on the overall quality of the 2022 NHL Draft. With Juraj Slafkovsky starting to hit his stride, while Owen Beck, Filip Mesar and Lane Hutson dominate outside the NHL, is this Draft class better than we all thought originally? Scott looks back at the draft, and whether or not the 2022 Draft class has the ability to single-handedly change the fortunes of the Canadiens franchise.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

As the hosts predicted, the Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota Wild played an extremely dumb game of hockey on Thursday night loaded with bad defence, ugly goals and unexpected fights. A slow start from the Habs saw them claw out of a two-goal deficit to tie the game, before a bad penalty by Joel Armia saw them surrender another power play goal against, before Juraj Slafkovsky tied it late to force overtime. The Wild got the second point in the dying seconds thanks to a defensive miscue, but at the end of the game the only story people had on their mind was the poor officiating across the board once again. Laura has your full recap and more to open the show!

Then, to end the show it's the Friday Mailbag and Laura takes the time to answer all the listener questions before the Christmas Holiday!

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens completed their season sweep of the Winnipeg Jets with a 3-2 overtime win on Monday night. Another great showing from Josh Anderson and a bounceback from Jake Allen helped the Habs steal two points from the Jets. Justin Barron overcame some rough moments to get the game-winning goal, and while the Habs are riding a nice little point streak, there are some worrying signs around the team as a whole after this game. Scott breaks it all down and more!

Also of note is that the NHL holiday roster freeze kicks in on December 19th at midnight, with the Habs in the crosshairs of many possible trade rumours what does this mean for their potential moves? There is also prospects who have been recalled from the Laval Rocket that could be impacted, and it's a big test for Kent Hughes to navigate. The Habs play three more games before the freeze is lifted while the Rocket also have three games to play during it. Can the Habs and Rocket work through this roster shuffle to get both teams players that they need in the coming weeks?

Finally, speaking of the Laval Rocket, a new face appeared at practice for them today in the form of a veteran goalie on a try-out deal. 30 year old Kasimir Kaskisuo joined the team today after signing a PTO earlier in the day, giving the Rocket a prominent AHL veteran for the first time this season. What does this mean for the goalie rotation with the Rocket, and can this move give the team the stability it has needed in net since Kevin Poulin retired?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

On Saturday night the Montreal Canadiens found the perfect remedy for some of their ailing players as they dismantled the New York Islanders in a 5-3 win. Joel Armia, Josh Anderson, Cole Caufield and Christian Dvorak all had goals in the impressive win, highlighted by a huge four-goal second period. Despite a nervous ending, it was a statement win from the Habs, and hopefully a building block for several of the goal scorers as well.

Then, it's Monday and that means Three Up, and Three Down!

On the up side of thing, the Habs offence is slowing waking up over the course of this week, and a big part of that is from two large players on the ice. Both Josh Anderson and Juraj Slafkovsky starred against the Islanders in a big way, and that should be some welcomed news for many Habs fans as the end of 2023 approaches. Also on the rise, rookie forward Riley Kidney with the Laval Rocket. While Joshua Roy is grabbing most of the attention, Kidney is slowing starting to find his own form and develop into a prospect worth following in the AHL.

On the flipside of things, the Laval Rocket continue to lack any sort of consistency in their play, losing 7-1 after pulling off a stunning last-minute win the night before. Strauss Mann hasn't been able to hold the net, while the defence continues to struggle badly. Scott also has some issues with how the Montreal Canadiens are handling call ups, as valuable prospects sit in the pressbox instead of playing games at either level.

Also struggling badly, the Pittsburgh Penguins...That's it, the hosts just wanted to point out that Pittsburgh might be on the cusp of an incredibly fraudulent season after losing 7-0.

On today's Montreal Canadiens mailbag episode, the questions include:

Some more discussion on Cole Caufield

Which Canadiens player or prospects have surpassed expectations and which have disappointed?

Have the Habs been more resilient following adversity as compared to previous years?

Have the Habs been inadvertently building a losing culture?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

It was a great game for the Montreal Canadiens, until it wasn't. The Habs squandered a two goal lead thanks to some questionable officiating, before losing in a shootout that needed ten total rounds. Scott continues to be frustrated by the distribution of ice time as Josh Anderson and Joel Armia continue to prove ineffective once again. Can the Canadiens and Martin St. Louis find a solution to get the offence in gear, and give more ice time to some of the younger players?

Prior to the game against the Penguins, the Montreal Canadiens also made a roster move, recalling forward Emil Heineman from the Laval Rocket while shifting Tanner Pearson to the IR. So who is Emil Heineman, and how can the Habs get the most out of the winger coming up from the AHL?

Finally, World Juniors is right around the corner, and we have our first(but surely not last) confirmed prospect suiting up in the form of Owen Beck. After being a late addition to the team last year due to an injury, and eventually ending up with a gold medal, what are the expectations for Beck this year?

We start todays episode with Cole Caufield and what it will take to get him "back" on track. Is there cause for concern or is he simply having a little run of bad luck? We then preview the Canadiens-Penguins game and discuss our expectations given the Penguins' rough start to the year. Finally, we talk a little bit about Jayden Struble's rise to becoming an NHLer.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens

After a three-game stint in Laval, many folks are wondering when Arber Xhekaj is coming back up to the NHL roster. With the team off until Wednesday there's still time for a recall, but Scott thinks that it might still be a little bit of a wait based on the return of David Savard. Also, can we put the "Xhekaj has to fight" narratives to rest?

Then it's time for Three Up, Three Down!

The injury bug is back again! With Tanner Pearson now missing for at least the next month with an upper body injury, again leaving the Canadiens forward group at less than full strength. Also, the NHL again has had a weekend to forget in terms of officiating and player safety once again, and that means Scott has a rant primed and ready.

On the positive side of things, Cayden Primeau stole a pair of points against the Buffalo Sabres in the shootout win. With the strength of his performances lately, has the young goaltender fully staked his claimed to the backup spot? To the surprise of no one, Juraj Slafkovsky continues to thrive alongside Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield including a slick shootout winning goal. So how far is the young star from breaking out and lighting up the scoresheet?
